My Favorite Musicals

All My Favorite Movie Musicals

My mother brought me up in a home full of music. Records albums, radio, television, and movies. The first musical I ever went to see in the theater was probably Fantasia by Walt Disney. Fantasia apparently was frightening to smaller children and I was one of them. I loved coloring books of the movie but the only thing I remember of it at the theater was being scared while watching one of the musical scenes where the screen was all solid colored and silhouettes danced while the orchestra played.
The first real musical I chose to see at a theater was The Sound of Music when it first came out. From that time until this, it has been my all time favorite movie musical.

Even before the Sound of Music was ever made, I knew the words and music to The King and I, and My Fair Lady. I never got to see either of those until I was an adult, however. South Pacific was one of my mother's favorite musicals and I listened to the original soundtrack from that many times growing up. Singing in the Rain was another musical I grew up watching on television. My mother also brought me up watching Fred Astaire's many movies no matter who his dancing partner was at the time. My mom also loved Nelson Eddy's movies however I never really did enjoy those as much as the others.

This lens is about the best of the best, and about my favorite movie musicals. I can't put them in any specific order because I love them all. However there are some I love more than others. After The Sound of Music, there is Oliver, and then Annie. Many movie musicals, such as Annie, were originally Broadway plays before they were made as films. Annie not only was a Broadway play and a film, it was filmed twice. The second film version was slightly different than the first and also had different actors and actresses. Personally, I prefer the first version. Robert Preston and Shirley Jones, along with Buddy Hackett, starred in another of my favorite movie musicals, The Music Man. They are all so wonderful, it's hard to say which ones I like more than the others. I hope you enjoy this lens and if you have something to say about musicals you love, please make sure to comment.

This is a long lens so please use the Table of Contents if you would rather skip ahead to see if your favorites are on my list.

Judy Garland Musicals

Judy Garland made a lot of wonderful movie musicals. I am not sure I could even begin to list them all. Some of my favorites that she did were the ones she did with Mickey Rooney. Strike Up The Band is the most popular of those, I think. Other musicals I can think of off the top of my head are Meet Me in St. Louis, Easter Parade, and The Wizard of Oz. I know there were many, many more. I also know that they don't make music like that anymore. Be sure to check out the Judy Garland videos on this lens. I am sure you will enjoy them as much as I do.

Where Can I Watch???

A couple of movie musicals are hard to find copies of. Lost Horizon and White Christmas are two I have included in this lens with videos from YouTube so you can watch right here on this lens. I'm sorry that they are not without interruption, however. You will have to watch them in segments, but the full movies are here just below this box. I have managed to get my own copy of White Christmas, but I've never been able to find a copy of Lost Horizon on either VHS or DVD.

Lost Horizon on YouTube

Lost Horizon is another one of my very favorite movie musicals. It is a musical remake of an older movie by the same title. Unfortunately, I have never found anywhere that a video copy of the movie can be purchased. The entire movie is available in segments on YouTube, however. You can watch it right here on this lens with the videos below. If at anytime you can't get the video from this list, the next video up will be at the side on YouTube itself so you can follow along easily.

White Christmas

My all time favorite Christmas movie is also a movie musical. White Christmas, staring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Vera Allen, and Rosemary Clooney can't be beat in my book for Christmas musicals. I grew up with this movie and it wasn't until last year that I was able to finally be able to get a copy of this movie for myself. It's one of those movies that I look forward to every year at Christmas time to see on television.

Musical Spotlight For Christmas

Classic Christmas Collection (It's a Wonderful Life / White Christmas)

Amazon Price: $14.60 (as of 06/03/2012)Buy Now

This Christmas you can get two popular classic Christmas movies in one. Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life, and Irving Berlin's White Christmas. Both movies are seasonal classics for the whole family to enjoy.
It's a Wonderful Life, staring James Stewart, and Donna Reed, tells the story of a man who sacrificed his dreams of going to college to manage the family business. When the business is threatened and he has no way of solving the problem, he's had enough and believes the only answer is suicide. When he tries this, he runs into an unlikely angel that God sends to help him. If the angel can help, the angel will earn his wings, and our hero of the story will live another day and find his way to go on. Click here to read more about this great movie
White Christmas, starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Vera-Ellen, and Rosemary Clooney, is another popular classic for Christmas. It's a musical about two former army guys after WWII taking their musical routines on the road. They meet up with two sisters who also have a musical show they take on the road. Turns out they are the sisters of one of the men in their outfit while in the army and decide to help them out. While helping them out, they also end up trying to help their former general by putting on a major production at his failing Vermont Ski Lodge. The problem? There's no snow.
