my favourite dos games
Ranked #639 in Computers & Electronics, #9,327 overall
As a kid I grew up playing many DOS games. Some of the titles have carried on through the years and make it to bigger console platforms like the Quake series. Playing these always brings back the fun and joy that I first experienced when playing as a child.
The other day I was searching for something inside my loft when I came across some of the original DOS games that I used to play as a child. Some of these games had the original floppy installation disks that were shipped with the software back in the day.
I decided to make a lens about them compiling of my 5 top dos games.

5 Duke Nukem
The first Duke Nukem game was initially created in the late 1980s by chief programmer Todd Replogle of Apogee Software (now 3D Realms) but it wasn't released until 1991 as the 2D version game. The game was written for the IBM compatible PC and featured 320 x 200 16 EGA graphics. There was no voice interaction only written text onscreen. The game did feature sounds but they were only 16 bit (a series of bleeps and tones)The game was set in the future of 1997 in which Dr Proton a once sane scientist is determined to take over the world. He plans to accomplish this goal by using his army of technobots (advanced killing machines) that are designed to initiate anything that would pose a threat to him.
His first move was to take one of earth's largest cities, the Military and Army responded with counter attacks. All attempts to stop Proton failed. As a last resort they employed Duke Nukem to fight his way through the city and to take Dr Proton out for good.
The first few levels of this game are pretty easy, when you start get used to jumping and using the controls, once you're confident you can start to explore this strange transformed world. You will find various coloured creates throughout the levels, to open a create you have to fire your weapon and reveal what's inside.
Its best to fire at a distance as some crates will contain explosives that run along the ground like a chain mine. If you do get caught out don't worry most of these only take down 1 or 2 bars of health. You will find various heath boosts around the game, anything that resembles food, a can of pop or a turkey breast will boost your health. Also there is special health boosts that will refill your health bar to 100% there often rare but can be a life saver when fighting in the later levels. There normally hidden in the black creates and you can easily recognise them as 3 bubbles red, green and blue rotating in a circle.
The object of the game is to fight your way through the level, obtain the keys necessary and escape through the exit door to the next level. Once you complete a level you will be brought to a blue hallway which will give you the option to save your game and display an game bonuses that you have got. I recommend that you save your game after each level, there's nothing more disappointing that dyeing and having to fight through the same levels to get back to the that point in the game again.
There are various upgrades that Duke can pick up throughout the game, most of them you will pick up later on but keep an eye out for them. To collect an upgrade just run Duke over the item, it will be automatically added to his inventory kit on the bottom right hand Window.

4 Gods
Created by the Bitmap Brothers the game was relesed in 1991. Your player is cast as Hurcules and is on a quest to concour the 4 worlds to acheve imortality. The AI that was programmed into the enemy was Sophisticated, it would adapt not only to the player position, but also to his skill. Some rooms contain inaccessible items - smaller "thieves" show up from a passage in the wall, try to grab the item and bring it back to another point in the room or disappear with it. The player is able to obtain the item if they shoot the thief at the correct time. Bonuses are awarded for reaching certain parts of the level under a certain limit of time or number of lives, bringing an object to a room or simply by playing poorly, where the game helps the player.
This game probally was first classed as a 2d jump and run platform, now althought this is true the players health and survival rate would depend on the items he has collected. At various points throughout the game the player would receive health and special items as a bonus, the more items the player collected the more "Goodies" the player was entitled to. Simply trying to speed run Gods would not have gotten you very far, the players health was measured by a jug of liquid on the screen, when the jug was empty the player died and loses a life.
The game did include health boosts which were in the form of foods that were scattered around the levels but these were sometimes a rare commodity to come across. The best way to stay alive playing this game is to collect as many gems and special items as possible. Collecting gems increased your score which was taken into account when you excel to the next level. This makes the world of difference when progressing to the next world, the enemie AI in the upper worlds get tougher so if you intend on beating the game this is deffinetly going to be the way to go.
As for the games cheats well there simply passwords that will take you to worlds in the game. There were no chaets that would give you imortality and allow you to speed through the game at ease. Maybe the bitmap brothers didnt want people to cheat and complete the game in 5 minutes.
The gave overall wasnt bad for the time, due to the lack of cheats in this game this made the game more of a challenge to play. There was no save option, when you completed a world and progressed onto the next you would be given a passcode that you can enter when you resume your progress. One of the most frustrating things was that if you died and ran out of lives in an episode you would have to begin from the start of that world. Sometimes you would have to die a few times just to get to know the correct route to take and where not to step. Even thought the game was a 2D interface some enemies could just simply fly through walls and attack you leaving you no option to stand and fight.
Anyway here are the passcodes

3 Blood
Blood was another classic 3D single person shooter that I descovered on an old demo disk.Created by 3D Realms Blood is a action horror gave that wont fail to put a smile on your face. I found this game to be hard at first and if your playing this for the first time then the Save game function will be your best friend.
The gameplay of Blood is witnessed through the eyes of the player, Caleb, and consists of fighting the hordes of various enemies as he fights his way through the levels of the game. In single player mode, the objective of the player is to lead Caleb in his quest of revenge against his former master which is achieved by completeing each of the levels of each separate episode, looking for an exit, until the "boss" level is reached and a showdown against a large opponent takes place.
Blood's gameplay is similar to Doom where the player will have to activate switches and or locate keys to proceed through the level. Blood was one of the first first person shooters that incoporated the ability to shoot 2 guns at once. You can pickup and shoot a target with both hands which can be deadly for any foe thats in your line of fire.
Blood is set around the time of World War 1 in middle eastern europe. This game was so awesome for many reasons. First, it had an amazing choice of weapons including the voodoo doll and 3 types of TNT. Good graphics for its time and a scary assortment of music. Good levels including a carnival full of surprises. Great enemies including the hand that grabbed your face. Kicking the heads of your enemies after you killed them made it all the more fun.
The story is unique, because we are told Caleb is not our typical hero, but he's a hired gun-slinger, who fell in love with a woman, joined a dark cult, Cabal. But, he's betrayed and killed by the god of the cult, Tchernobog. So, he comes back rising from the grave with the infamous words, "I live.. again" to take revenge and eliminate all the members of the cult.

2 Doom 2
Doom and Doom2 were both the creation of ID software, this game has a similar engine to Quake your fighting a whole new bunch of demons each with super natural powers rarther than chain saws.Doom 2 was realeased to the public on October 10 1994 and like quake this game quickly took off and made it onto the Mac, Game boy advanced and XBox 360.
One feature that you wont find in quake is the ability to jump. ID Software have replaced this with a super sprint option, if you held down the shift key while running you ran twice as fast, fast enough to outrun any demon in the game. This gave you a good advantage when fighting in a large area where your able to move about freely. This also worked with the strafe keys allowing you to circle strafe around your enemy at close range and deal maximum damage with out getting hit by your enemies fire.
Instead of jumping from ledge to ledge like in quake in Doom there were gaps that you would have to dash across to move onto the next area. Now after playing quake for so many years this took a long time to get used to, but it is required for you to advance through the game on certain levels.
One other thing you should aviod is to never get boxed in, as theres no jump option this can mean certain immediate death if the player in not able to shoot there way out of a corner. This can be easier said that done, you can easily find your self boxed in with several spectures (Invisable demons) They move fast so watchout
Ive never really put my finger on this but theres something about doom that kinda picks up the mood, not sure weither it has something to do with the design of the levels and the theme (doesnt feel like your fighting in hell all the time) The graphics werent bad, considering the game is 17 years old and the level designs make this game fun for any fan of RPG single player shooters to play.

1 Quake
Quake is the first game in the eponymous Quake series. Quake began development as a free roaming RPG but then switched to a first person shooter as Id's previous series Doom.Quake or Win Quake as some people refer to is one of the best horror action games out there. The game consists of 4 worlds, in which the player goes to collect the 4 magical lost runes. When you have fought your way through all 4 worlds and collected all of the 4 runes you will appear back in the level select martix room where a secret drop will be avaliable to take you to the final battle.
The game has endless mods and cheats that can keep the fun going for hours and hours.
Heres some of the cheats listed below. To use these codes, press '~' while playing to call up the console (looks like command prompt), then type the desired code.

SV_GRAVITY -50 Reduces gravity by 50%. Replace "-50" with any number.
Hint: To make these codes easier to enter you can bind them to a single key. To do so, enter the console and type bind (any key) "cheat". For example, to bind the cheat for all weapons to the backslash (), type:
bind "impulse 9"
Now this is where the fun begins... start the game on nightmare mode. To do this you will have to find the secret nightmare portal. Nightmare mode is crawling with Death Knights, shamblers and every creature that ID Software could possibly counger up. Now once youve passed through the nightmare portal, flip of the god cheats, all ammo and weapons oh and of course quad damage. Now use the Map cheat to warp to what ever level you desire. Always remember to check that god mode is enabled, ive noticed that each time you warp to another map god mode automatically turns off with some of the cheats.
You will wank into a scene of carnage and destruction, all around you enemies will be tearing to get at you from all angles...enable quad damage and equipt the rocket launcher, now sit back and clean the floor with ease :)
Another fun trick of quake is to get deamons in each others line of fire, this doesn't always work but its fun to watch them tear each other appart when they do. If your having trouble with this enable no clip mode, that way you can walk right through them. Note this doesnt stop them coming back for more once theve finished there little dual. If you want to walk through a level with out a fight then the NO TARGET cheat is the way to go.
Since its release the quake engine has evolved into many games and its still a popular game to play today. It is likely that we will still see Quake in the game charts for many more years to come.

- Neat lens. Sadly, the only game I played on the list was Quake I. It was also one of my first game programming platforms.
