My Hosta Plant - from sprouting to full growth
This lens is the documentation of the growth of my hosta plant from when it started sprouting in the Spring until it reaches it's full growth. (And, later, the hosta blooming.)
I rescued this pot of hosta from the porch of an unoccupied rental house belonging to my brother. Most hostas are planted directly in the ground, but they can be potted. This particular hosta is in a large pot and grows to be rather large. (I counted about 24 sprouts coming up.)
Why did I want to document my hostas growth, you ask?
I've had this hosta for 4 years. Every year it came in so fast, I sometimes thought it almost grew to full height overnight. I'd look out the window one day and it was just coming up...it seemed when I looked out the next time, it was almost grown!! I decided to actually watch it and see just how fast it does grow. Each day I took pictures. On the 7th day, I began measuring it each day. From my measurements, it grows about 1/2 inch a day! It slowed down a little after about the 18th day. After 28 days, it is now measuring...well, just keep reading and you'll find out!
While it actually doesn't just grow to full height "overnight", you can see a definite growth spurt each day! As the leaves start unfurling, it just gets fuller and fuller! It's been fun to watch and document. I hope you enjoy seeing it and learning more about hostas on this lens.
Be forewarned...I'm not a professional photographer...not even a good one! I would love to be able to set up a camera on a tripod to get the exact same view each day, but I couldn't. No matter how much I tried, I couldn't get the pictures exactly the same. Also, sometimes it was sunny, sometimes cloudy or rainy. I usually took them at about the same time every day (3 pm), except one day I did have to take my pictures in the morning instead. I hope you enjoy watching my hosta as it grows!
A little about hostas...
Hostas come in many varieties, but most the most common has a large heart shaped green leaf. Some have a white streak in the leaf. They can grow to be about 2 feet high and can spread as much as 5 to 6 feet wide! A hosta will have small bell shaped white or light purple flowers on a long stem in mid to late summer. The hosta plant dies out in the fall, and then comes back in the early spring. Hostas love the shade. Deer love to eat hosta! Enough said!

Hosta Plants
Unusual Hosta Varieties...
There are many varieties of hosta plants...more than I can put on this page. Here are a few unusual hosta plants that would make interesting additions to your garden. As you'll see, my hosta is just a common, everyday variety of hosta with simple green leaves.
Hosta Growing: Days 1 & 2
March 23, 2009: The hosta sprouts are just coming through the soil. But, don't blink, or they will have leaves unfurling!

Day 1 - March 23, 2009

Day 2
Hosta Growing: Days 6 - 8
Day 6: There were a few days of bad weather & didn't take pictures again until Day 6.
Day 7: there's a big growth sprurt.
Day 8: you can see some of the leaves starting to unfurl.
Rate of Growth:
I started measuring the leaves on day 7, and the hosta is growing at a rate of approximately 1/2 inch per day!

Day 6 - March 28, 2009

Day 7 - 3.5"

Day 8 - 4"
Hosta Growing: Days 9 - 13
Can you see them getting taller each day? Look at the inside of the pot and compare how far they're up the side of it each day. More and more leaves are beginning to unfurl!

Day 9 - March 31, 2009

Day 10 - 5"

Day 11 - 5.5"

Day 12 - 6"

Day 13 - 6.5"
Hosta Growing: Days 14 - 17
Some days, this hosta really jumps! As the leaves unfurl it gets fuller and fuller. You can see it growing more each day. I stopped measuring after the 15th day.

Day 14 - April 5, 2009

Day 15 - 7.5"

Day 16

Day 17
Hosta Growing: Days 18 - 20
Still growing, growing, growing...

Day 18 - April 9, 2009

Day 19

Day 20
Hosta Growing: Days 21 - 25
The hosta seems to be growing a little slower now and you can't see as much of a day to day change. Of course, the weather has been cloudy, cool, and rainy...so it may have slowed it up a little.

Day 21

Day 22

Day 23

Day 24

Day 25 - 10.5"
Final Day?
I had previously had the 25th day, April 16th, as the last day, but then noticed the hosta had grown from 10.5" to 12" in 3 days! So-o-o, decided to post one more picture!
Day 28 - The Final Day!
Or, so I thought...
The picture below will be the last picture I will post for now.
Although I think this hosta may have a little more growth yet, it is slowing down to the point that I don't want to bore you with all the photos! If it grows a lot more, I'll post a new picture. This fall, when it blooms, I'll post a picture of that.
As of today, April 19, 2009, Day 28 since I first noticed it sprouting through the soil, the longer leaves are measuring in at 12"! So-o-o, from this little experiment, we have learned that it takes approximately 28 - 30 days for a hosta to grow to full height!
I'd like to thank everyone who has visited my lens and left such nice comments!
I hope you've enjoyed watching my hosta grow!

Day 28 - April 19 - 12"
Update...
Obviously, this hosta wasn't finished growing at all!! It's grown so much more since the last picture I posted, I had to post another one! It's filled out until it spans a good 2 feet and the leaves are 14 inches long and longer! It's really pretty...so I decided to share! You'll be amazed at the new picture below. I really think it's finished growing now! Thanks again for "Watching My Hosta Grow"!

Leaves - 14" & spans 2' wide!

My Hosta is Blooming!
My hosta is blooming! Hostas grow long stems and have light purple blooms. I've seen them bloom as early as the first part of June, but mine doesn't start blooming until the end of June or later. The following pictures were taken on July 4, 2009.

"The 1996 Hosta of the Year... this hosta is destined for greatness! The medium-sized green leaves emerge with a gold border that quickly changes into a nice wide creamy edge. In late summer, the rapidly multiplying 4' wide clump is topped with stalks of very fragrant near-white flowers. For us, this is the last hosta to go dormant. Dynamite!"
My Hosta in 2011
Just a little note about the progress of my hosta in 2011. As of today, April 21, my hosta is not nearly as large as on the same date in 2009. Due to the cold spring we've had, I believe it's gotten a late start, but it's still growing and I'm sure will get much larger.
