The letter that saved our marriage

An unexpected love letter

Three years ago, right after we moved here, my husband and I weren't getting along too great. We were always arguing, bickering, and nit-picking. Basically we each did our best to be a pain in the butt.

After a while, it seemed like we weren't going to get past our differences, so we talked about splitting up. I can't even describe the pain I felt. It broke my heart to think about losing the man I believed was my soul mate, my one true love.

Apparently he felt the same way because he did something he'd never done before. He wrote me a love letter.

It wasn't written on fancy paper. It wasn't filled with lovely verses. It wasn't folded nicely inside an envelope. It wasn't anything like you would expect a love letter to be. But it was written from his heart. He put so much thought into every word, and all because he didn't want to lose his soul mate either.

Now here it is, 3 years later and I still have that love letter. I carry it with me wherever I go. Sometimes I'll take it out, carefully unfold it and reread every word. I've read it so often that it's getting brittle. So I decided to immortalize it here. Now even if the ink fades and the paper tears, I'll always have a way to remember the sweetest love letter I ever received.

My treasured love letter

I love you because...

when we wake up, we're both grouchy until we have our first cigarette.

“Give him a chance. After all, it is his first love letter.”

I love you because...

of the way you smile and blush every time I call you baby.

“Ahhh. That's better.”

I love you because...

you asked me to move in with you, and you asked me to date you, when I didn't have the courage to ask you either one.

I love you because...

of the way you think of everyone else no matter who it is or how long you've known them. You had never even met my niece and you still bought her a toy.

December 30, 2008

I love you because...

you're so organized. We moved in together almost as strangers and you still wanted to organize my clothes.

“Actually, I just didn't want to live in a mess. lol.”

I love you because...

Sorry folks. Adding this one would have made this an X-Rated lens.

“Right back atcha baby!”

I love you because...

you don't take no crap from anyone.

Our first Anniversary

I love you because...

you are an excellent mother.

Our Second Anniversary

I love you because...

of the way you love to cuddle to me when we're sleeping.

Still going strong!

I will never be able to tell you how much I love you, but I sure as heck can show you!

Love, Johnny

How sweet. Sure wish we could express ourselves on paper when we're having communication problems. We've made it 20 years, so guess we've learned to roll with the ups and downs of marriage.
Best of luck to the pair of you.

I wouldn't call it a letter, more a note in a card, but treasured just the same! My husband is gone from us, but his cards and words are there for me to touch when I need comfort.
    SMILES!

How precious a love letter like this is...you need to have it laminated so it won't further deteriorate. The two of you are very fortunate to have met someone who brings this kind of love to the other one. More power to you and your family!

It really doesn't need to be poetic, and sometimes it is what we read between the lines that means more than the words themselves. I am glad that John did this. As to the original letter, I would frame it, but take photocopies of it first. That way you can unfold, refold, read, touch as often as you want and when the copy wears out, go grab a fresh one. This letter will be something to look back on when you both grow old together. Congratulations to both of you for finding that one special person that you couldn't imagine living life without.

That's exactly what I did. It's scanned to my computer plus I made 5 copies. lol.
