Why not a handphone?
Banks cannot rely on handphones to deliver you an urgent message. They can be more suitable for displaying an automated text message on a transaction you have done. But to have more acceptable verification banks would have to call you personally. Banks do not depend on handphones because they can be used as decoys. You can get your credit card, giving only the handphone number as a contact detail, use the card everywhere and then throw away the SIM card and do a bunk. Banks would have hell of a time in trying to obtain your address details from the mobile network providers. Banks do not like that. They depend on land lines. You can not get rid of your land line that easily. Even if you disconnect it the bank can come to your home. So banks normally expects a land line telephone number from you.
