My Little Pony are toy ponies, these ponies are cute and colorful and the unique symbol on their flanks acts as a namesake and allows easy identification. My Little Pony was launched in 1983 and the line reached wide ranging popularity during the 80's. The original toy line ran from 1983 to 1995 and inspired many books, animated specials, films and a number of television series.
Generation one: Dream Valley
Originally My Little Pony began with the Earth Ponies, quickly followed by Pegasus Ponies, Unicorn Ponies, Flutter Ponies and Sea Ponies. Then new styles of little ponies were introduced for example Rainbow Ponies, which had brightly colored rainbow manes and tails. My Little Pony merchandise expanded into children's bedding, soft toys, books and play sets such as the Dream Castle. My Little Pony Tales is a cartoon that was created at the end of the 1st generation in 1992. The main characters were the ponies Starlight, Sweetheart, Melody, and Bright Eyes.
Generation Two: Friendship Gardens
These ponies incorporated new features including jewel eyes and turning heads, they also appeared slimmer, and taller than the first generation.
Generation Three: Ponyville
These ponies are mainly of the earth variety although a few unicorns were included. Many ponyville ponies have pearl bodies with matte symbols, these pony's home is Celebration Castle.
Generation Four: Equestria
The current My Little Pony's were started in 2010 and is centered on the TV show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, which features around Twilight Sparkle the unicorn as she has adventures relating to friendship. Some of the latest ponies to be released include Feathermay, Flitterheart, Snowcatcher and Twinkleshine.

The ponies main friend is Megan, who helps them in times of trouble. She has a magic rainbow that she keeps in her locket, which helps her defeat the ponies enemies. Danny and Molly her siblings also help the ponies. Other creatures that inhabit the ponies world include the grundles, the bushwoolies and the moochick.
Hydia and her daughters Draggle and Reeka often cause trouble for the ponies including when they created the smooze or purple ooze.

The My Little Pony TV series, gave the toys great character and plenty of adventures. The shows focus on the themes of friendship and helping others, which is great for helping young children learn. The ponies will often be found overcoming evil through their resourcefulness and they also protect others, such as the grundles. Megan is a gentle nurturing character who looks after the little ponies and helps protect them using her magic rainbow, this cartoon is very gentle and innocent and a nice move away from some more violent cartoons now on TV. The pony names are incredibly sweet and pretty and the cartoon drawing are now iconic, with the wide legs and distinctive bright manes and tails. The overall setting of the cartoon is an adorable fantasy world of magical ponies and creatures and pretty settings including Dream Valley, Ponyville and Equestria.

My Little Pony has been around for nearly 30 years and continues to produce the same sweet stories and adorable characters it did in the beginning. It looks like this trend will continue with My Little Pony becoming popular in the modern internet age, there is now an increasing interest in fan art, fan fiction, there is also a trend for taking old ponies and re-modelling them with new designs and features. This has led to the creation of Bronies an increasingly large adult fan base. Ponies remain a great collectors item, with a huge range of characters, accessories and limited edition items, especially among those characters created for foreign markets.
