If you're American, doesn't the name "Yorkshire Pudding" just make you think of the most delicious, decadent food? If you've read books written by British authors, you've read of roast and Yorkshire pudding. Did you ever wonder why the author mentioned the main dish in the same breath as the dessert? Of course, if you're British, you know the answer. Yorkshire pudding isn't pudding at all! At least, not that sweet, custard consistency stuff Americans call pudding.

Check out the recipe below to learn how to make this truly British food. It was my mom's recipe and it always turned out delicious, at least when she made it. Could be because she was born and raised in England and she liked to cook. I, on the other hand, hate to cook! And when pressed into it, I cook easy recipes with few ingredients. And I use gadgets. All those cool kitchen gadgets that make it fun to cook.

The first recipe below is the way my mom cooked. The second one is my conversion of her recipe into something I could cook.

Bittersweet Childhood Memories

Yorkshire pudding brings back bitter sweet memories for me. Every Sunday while I was growing up, a roast went into the oven before we left for church. When we arrived home, my mother would mix up the Yorkshire pudding and slip it into the oven while we all changed out of our church clothes. This was our Sunday ritual that never varied unless we were traveling. Over the years, many of my friends were introduced to this traditional British recipe.

Ten years ago my mother developed lung cancer. About a month before she passed away, she had invited my family and I for lunch. She planned to have roast and Yorkshire pudding. That day I found her in the kitchen with a mixing bowl in hand, flour on the counter, and a confused look on her face. When I asked her what was wrong, she just looked at me with tears in her eyes. It took me a few minutes to realize that she had been trying to make the Yorkshire pudding but was unable to remember how to make it. The same recipe she had made for her family all of our lives. I knew then that the cancer had spread and her time with us was coming to a close.

Today, I rarely make Yorkshire pudding (so unhealthy!), but when I do it makes me smile and think of my mom and those warm, childhood memories. And of course, mine never turns out half as good as hers!

Glass Baking Dishes a Must

And a stainless steel whisk!

My mother insisted that Yorkshire pudding had to be made in a glass baking dish to come out right. I found that a stoneware dish worked just as well. Sorry mom, I love my stoneware!

My mother died almost 10 years ago from lung cancer, too. I wrote a chocolate covered cherry lens about her favorite holiday candy recipe. In other words, I know how you feel. That Yorkshire pudding looks really tasty! I bet my own kids (and grandkids) would love it.
