Today I will share with you my not so secret Sweet And Sour Sauce Recipe. We all have our special recipes and this one is mine.

I don't have to peek into a cookbook for a reminder as to how it's preparation goes as the ingredients for my sweet and sour sauce have been adapted and altered so many times that the recipe no longer looks anything like it originally did. This special sauce recipe now exists only in my mind, and in my heart, to be lovingly created each time from memory.

This was my mother's sweet and sour sauce recipe but over time it has been babied and refined till it became mine.This is my not so secret sweet and sour sauce recipe and it is delicious.

My Not So Secret Sweet And Sour Sauce Recipe

Basic Sweet And Sour Sauce Recipe:

Two cans of Campbell's Tomato Soup (You can also substitute, or add in, one large can of stewed tomatoes)
One cup of lightly packed brown sugar
One quarter to one half cup of vinegar
Approximately four cups of water.
Three heaping tablespoons of corn starch

In a medium to large pot stir together the first four ingredients.

Place the cornstarch into a jar, half fill the jar with water, shake till smooth, then add this mixture into the pot.

Cook at medium high heat stirring constantly till mixture thickens. After mixture comes to a boil reduce heat to a simmer. Allow to simmer for around a half hour, stir occasionally.

A good barbecue sauce can make your backyard party the talk of the neighborhood.

The Secret Ingredients:

While the sauce is simmering you have time to prepare the secret ingredients that will magically transform this already delicious basic sweet and sour sauce into a little taste of pure heaven.

Secret Ingredients:

One large onion
Four spears of celery
One bulb of garlic
One large green pepper
Four tablespoons non-hydrogenated margarine (no trans fats!)

These ingredients must be put into a skillet to simmer till soft, however there is a specific order in which they must hop into the pan, luckily this gives you time to dice up the one that is next to go in.

Get out your favorite skillet, set your temperature to a medium heat level, and add the margarine into the pan to melt. Celery always goes first into the pan, onion second, green pepper and garlic always being the last in. Once again keep in mind the secret to the success of this recipe, everyone's tastes buds are different, you must adjust the amount and type of ingredients in this recipe to what your taste buds consider best.

When the vegetables are soft but not overcooked add them into the simmering pot of sweet and sour sauce. Simmer this mixture for around another fifteen minutes; stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

The secret to the success of this recipe:

Everyone's taste buds are different so you have to adjust this recipe suit what you and your family will enjoy. Taste the sauce often as it simmers so that you are able to adjust it to your preferences. Most sweet and sour recipes call for two parts of sweet for every one part of sour, but you must judge whether you prefer yours to be a little on the sweet side, or a little on the sour.

If it is too sour then add more brown sugar.
If it is too sweet then add more vinegar.
If it is too bland add more of both or another can of tomato soup.
If it is too thick add more water.
If it is too thin add more corn starch mixture.

    My mouth is watering with a sweet and sour tingle that I am enjoying. Now, I have never heard of sweet and sour spaghetti but I think I've had everything else and would love the spaghetti. My Mom used to make a sweet and sour cocktail meatball recipe that was good hot or cold, it seems like she used chili sauce and grape jelly for the sauce in equal amounts and we all sure looked forward to those little balls of joy at Christmas.     I also have my secret recipes -- some learnt since I came to Africa. Usually secret recipes are simple and easy but make a great difference. I like sweet and sour -- there is a great Chinese place in Gaborone, Botswana, called ~The Red Lantern where I used to have them, Now I can make my own at home -- I moved to South Africa and I was missing my sweet and sour dishes

    It's a really good sweet and sour sauce recipe. It is funny because my mom passed me this recipe when I was young and yet while she was dining on it at our house she asked me for the recipe. Ha...shows how recipes change in different hands.

    Thanks, I love anything sweet and sour. Regarding the debate between the wood and plastic cutting boards ... agreed molds, viruses, bacteria actually tend to thrive on plastic. I use a marble cutting board and prefer it over the wood though!
