My Orange Spacehopper

Ranked #15,241 in Hobbies, Games & Toys, #233,397 overall

I loved my little Orange Space Hopper

When I was about 3 in 1973, My all time favourite toy was my Space Hopper. They were all the rage then.
We lived in a flat so we didn't have a garden. I wasn't allowed to play on my Spacehopper inside so I would have to wait to go to my Grandparents house and play in their back garden

Here I am...

Me and my Grandad...At the age of 3 with my Grandad in his back garden on my Space Hopper.
I did love bouncing up and down around the garden for hours on end. What a work-out I got back then. I don't know where all the energy came from. I certainly couldn't last 5 minutes on a Spacehopper now without needing my inhaler.

At school we even had Spacehopper races on School Sports day. I did very well from that and always won a rosette for my efforts.
Everyone had a Spacehopper back then. They were relatively cheap toys that just kept giving and giving.
I don't know what happened to the old thing but I bet it was well worn out!

History of the Space Hopper.

So, I was intrigued.
Where did Space Hoppers first come from?
This is from the Wiki page

"A space hopper, also known as a moon hopper, skippyball, kangaroo ball, bouncer, hoppity hop, or hop ball, is a rubber ball (similar to an exercise ball) with handles which allow one to sit on it without falling off. The goal is to hop around with it, using the elastic properties of the ball to move forward.

The term "space hopper" is more common in the UK; the toy is less familiar in the United States, and may be known as a "hoppity hop" or some other name. A similar toy popular in the U.S. in the 1980s was the pogo ball, which has a hard plastic ring encircling the ball instead of a handle."

So who actually invented the Space Hopper??
Back to Wiki page

"The space hopper was said to have been invented by Aquilino Cosani of Ledragomma, an Italian company that manufactured toy rubber balls. He patented the idea in Italy in 1968, and in the United States in 1971. Cosani called the toy PON-PON."

I am thinking that I am glad we in the UK changed it's name to SPACE HOPPER as I don't think it would have been so popular had it been known as the PON PON

Let's have some fum

So we all had fun on our Space Hoppers. They are great for Exercise too. Sometimes it is hard to get your balance but once you do its amazing how many calories you could burn off.
