This is one of my favorite lenses so far on hiking the Appalachian trail. I remember coming across your story when I first signed up with Squidoo. I have learned so much from reading your experiences.
  • ggherardi May 4, 2012 @ 4:48 pm | delete
Very interesting lens!!! I did the Inka´s trail in Peru (my home country) it is amazing!
  • desertdarlene May 2, 2012 @ 9:04 am | delete
My dad tried to do the Appalachian trail, but blew his knee out half-way through. Still, pretty good for a guy in his mid to late 60s.
  • Steve_Kaye Apr 10, 2012 @ 7:43 pm | delete
Congratulations. Your story is both amazing and inspiring.
  • siobhanryan Mar 31, 2012 @ 6:19 pm | delete
Your story shows that people can realise their dream if they persist.
  • cathywoodosborn Mar 21, 2012 @ 10:33 pm | delete
Incredible!!! I have the same dream, but not nearly so ambitious. If I could just hike part of the AT, I would be satisfied. Have you read "Blind Courage?" BTW, love your style. :-)
  • MysticTurtle Mar 22, 2012 @ 6:02 am | delete
I did read Blind Courage, and I met Bill Irwin at a trail gathering. Incredible story!

Enjoyed this lens tremendously. Have always wanted to hike the Appalachian trail after reading, "A Walk in the Woods " by Bill Bryson. However, since I live on the west coast, I might be happy with hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. Hats off to you for doing this!
  • TableTalk Jul 22, 2011 @ 7:22 pm | delete
Our oldest son hiked the trail in 2000. He was 20 years old. He spent a full year preparing for it. When he left, his bedroom was full of pre-packed dry food packages. He would call us up when he knew he would be close to a town and let us know to mail a package of food to that town's post office. When he got into that town, the first thing he would do is go to a local grocery store, and buy and eat a stick of butter and a pint of ice cream. He was burning 6,000 a day. Hikers can eat! Then he would find the post office and pick up the package of dry food we mailed. He spent 5 and half months out there. Boy does he have some stories to tell. Trail Angels, Storms, Critters, People and more. If I remember right, he hiked about 15 miles just to get to the Trail Head at Springer Mountain Georgia. You have to hike that far just to get to the trail! It was only his first couple of days hiked in, and he had already seen people throw their gear off a cliff, turn around and go back home. Hiking this trail is not for the faint of heart. As I said, my son spent a full year preparing to hike it before he went. Its an amazing feat for someone to undertake.

I do day hikes and know a few people who have done parts of the AT. Your story was very interesting to follow. I never gave much thought to everything involved. Such as taking trips into towns along the way to get supplies and having supplies mailed to local Post Offices along the way. Thanks for sharing all this.
  • sojourner-1 Jul 9, 2011 @ 6:41 pm | delete
Great story. I have been following stories of the Appalachians for many years-- waiting for my turn to come. My trail story may be a ways off--what a story it will be. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice lens and tale of your AT experience! I'm off to see what other lenses you have made, but wonder if I will find one called "How to Make a Soda Can (or Beer - hahaha) Camp Stove!

What a great story and accomplishment. You did what so many people won't do. That is to "do it afraid." Most people are stopped from doing many things based on their fears and what other people tell them (and most other people give out advice based on their own fears.) Congratulations on listening to yourself and being true to your dreams.
  • happynutritionist Jul 7, 2011 @ 9:00 am | delete
What a wonderful accomplishment...I must read your book. I have always thought doing at least a part of the trail would be fun...we stumbled upon the part where it passes here in Northern NJ one day when out on one of our enjoy the outdoors drives and hikes. Congrats on the LOTD.
  • Wysiwigs Jul 7, 2011 @ 7:52 am | delete
Commented, then lost it (rats!). Let's try this again:

  • Psycho-Gamer Jul 7, 2011 @ 2:05 am | delete
Wow...congrats...well done....i love staying outdoors...i love hiking the wilds....but i have never hiked for more than 3 days......my biggest problem is food.....i cannot tolerate crappy food...i do care about the heavy backpack (actually i love it) i do not care about tireness....i do not care about wild animals and people........the only thing i care is food....having not dehydrated meals...
as for your book...you could just put together all your journal notes...take away some very personal entries.....refined them a bit...and publish it....very simple... A Hiker's Journal

  • RawBill Jul 6, 2011 @ 6:06 pm | delete
Wow, what an adventure! This is something that I would love to do myself sometime. Did you see any bears? They would concern me! I have friends that did the Pacific Rim trail as a family from Mexico to Canada. That took them about 6 months and it was life changing for them too. One of my goals is to do the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea. It is not long, but very difficult, wet and steep as well as important in Australian World War 2 history. It is only 60 miles long but reaches 7,185 ft in altitude in the tropical jungle.
  • newbizmau Jul 6, 2011 @ 6:05 pm | delete
That sounds like a great adventure to do with a great group of friends. I wouldn't want to be alone. I like a little company for the down time and I don't like to eat out alone.

A great lens and a great story. Congratulations to making it all the way along the Appalachian Trail. I've read enough to understand this is a BIG ACCOMPLISHMENT. I also liked your honest analysis of your hesitation with hiking the AT. I too am a big fan of "Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway". In fact, I'm thinking now that I really should reread it. Oh, and finally your line, "stuff happens in my hometown too" -- great comeback. Did you ever think about trying to find someone to go with you or did you want to do it alone?
  • MysticTurtle Jul 6, 2011 @ 3:48 pm | delete
It would have been nice to have company, but I don't know too many people who would want to (or could) do that hike. I knew I would be meeting new friends to hike with on the trail anyway.
  • ohcaroline Jul 6, 2011 @ 9:19 am | delete

Beautiful story Mystic! And Congratulations on LOTD as well as finishing the trail! I actually live in the White Mountains of NH, and do a lot of "Trail Magic" whenever I meet a Thru-Hiker (which I do every year). Gorham, NH is the town next to me, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to meet a Thru-Hiker even today (right around now we get a lot of you in town!).

I've never hiked the AT, but frequently walk and hike on parts of it since it's in my front yard. I did 70 miles of the Long Trail in VT some years ago, and the idea of a longer hike didn't grab me. But I always love meeting those for whom the AT is "home."

We have friends who have done the AT more than once, and my ex-husband did it in 1984. One of our close friends goes out every spring for his 6-week AT "fix" where he does a section (even though he has hiked the entire trail before). So you are right when you say Thru-Hikers never get over their AT addiction!

You did a wonderful job describing the experience, and hopefully the glow of your amazing accomplishment will always be with you.

    Hugs,
    Kath :)

I love hiking, but couldn't hike that far because of physical conditions. Living not too far from the trail we see lots of hikers doing the Appalachian trail here in Tennessee. It looks like fun and hard work. Not everyone makes it to the end, many only make it part way. Congrats on finishing the trail. It will be an interesting book as well. My oldest son is hoping to make that journey one day as well.

Congratulations on LOTD, for reaching the end of the Appalachian Trail and for writing a book!! What an awesome experience. I lived in Atlanta for a few years, and I hiked various trails every chance I got. I really wanted to hike the Appalachian, but working full time and going to night school didn't allow me to be a full time hiker! I admire anyone who hikes and especially completes the trail. The few parts of the AT I saw was beautiful, and who knows, I might hike part of it one day, but not all of it!! I did hike through to the end of your lens and thoroughly enjoyed it!! I remain for now.....an "armchair hiker". :-)
