My Passion For Reading

Ranked #1,275 in Squidoo Community, #138,905 overall

Words, Stories, Articles and Information! I Just Love To Read!

I've always liked to read, and I'll read just about anything: the back of cereal boxes; prescription instructions; bibliographies on the bottom of a research paper; and the fine print on legal documents. And of course, the articles and lenses on Squidoo! If it has words, you will find me reading them.

My passion for reading probably came from my parents, as they were both school teachers. My mother taught kindergarten and 1st grade, while my father taught mathematics and earth science. Education has always been important in our family, and reading just goes along with it.

I have a huge library of books of all types. Most are fiction, but I do have some reference books, poetry, "how-to" and recipe books. These books are all over my house: on book shelves, on the television stand, beside my chair, and under my bed. I also have boxes of books in my storage shed! I probably should sell them to Half-Price Books or online, but then I wouldn't be able to re-read them!

I much prefer to have a book that I can hold in my hand, as opposed to online or a Kindle. I like the feel of paper, and enjoy being able to turn the page. Plus, it's just easier on my eyes!

The books & magazines I'm currently reading include:

  • Farm Show Magazine
  • Stephanie Plum's Explosive Eighteen
  • Acceptable Loss by Kregg P.J. Jorgenson
  • Come Quick, Rodger's Had A Fit by George Dolan
  • Backyard Poultry Magazine

My Favorite Farm-Related Magazines

Farm Show and Backyard Poulty Magazines

Farm Show Magazine is a really interesting publication because the articles are written by every day people, showcasing their ideas and inventions. These writers share ideas on how to make life more interesting and exciting, or an easier way to do a task. For example, one inventor came up with the "Dandelion Dobber", which is a pole that applies weed killer directly to the plant. (I actually purchased one of these, and it works wonders!) It is really amazing the things these farmers come up with!

Backyard Poultry covers all types of birds: chickens, ducks, geese, guineas and game birds. There are always great photos that readers have submitted of their feathered friends, and articles on their care, health and feeding. I would like to think that I already know everything there is to know about poultry, but I always learn something new! I actually keep all back issues of this magazine, and refer to them often.

Mother Earth News

Great Magazine For Sustainable Living

Mother Earth News (1-year auto-renewal)

Amazon Price: $14.95 (as of 06/03/2012)Buy Now

Mother Earth News is another excellent magazine. I have subscribed to it on-and-off for the past 30 years. It covers everything you need to have, do and use if you want to live a self-sufficient lifestyle. Sample topics include: organic gardening, canning, solar energy, do-it-yourself projects, and raising animals. While some of the topics don't apply to me personally, I always learn a lot from this magazine.

Fiction

Sci-Fi, Mysteries, & Silly Stuff

Books I Like To ReadI like fiction, because it doesn't require much thought. These are the type of books I read out in the yard, or when I want to wind down at the end of the day. It can be any type of novel: science fiction, mystery, or just something really silly. I'm not too fond of romance novels or Westerns, but if there is nothing else to read, these will do in a pinch. It doesn't really matter what the plot is, or who the characters are. I just enjoy a story that has a tiny bit of substance and not too much technical knowledge.

Some of the fiction authors I enjoy are:

  • Clive Cussler
  • Elizabeth Peters
  • Robert Heinlein
  • Mary Higgins Clark

What do you like to read?

I'm always looking for new authors or series of books to read. Do you have a recommendation for me?

For a comic type mystery, try the Agatha Raisin series by MC Beaton. For urban fantasy, try Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse books. For just plain ole wacky humor try Terry Pratchett's disc world series. I highly recommend all of these. (I too will read anything!)
  • wordchazer Mar 4, 2012 @ 3:33 pm | delete
Arthur C Clarke, Orson Scott Card, Greg Bear and Robert Silverberg could push your SF buttons. Murder mystery novels I enjoy are generally by Peter May or Kate Atkinson. For epics, try Howard Fast or Edward Rutherfurd, for descriptive sagas, Cynthia Harrod Eagles is your lady. Am featuring this lens because it is wonderful. I also read the sides of cornflake packets if nothing else presents itself, so I'm definitely in your corner.

Wow! You and I could easily be related! I have thousands of books in my personal library... shelves and shelves and shelves and boxes and boxes of them. I have children's books, text books, do-it-yourself, fiction, non-fiction, religious... just about everything! I love running across someone else who shares my love of the written word!

I wish I had time to read more -- both fiction and non-fiction. As a doctoral student trying to finish my dissertation, however, I've had to pleasure reading on the back burner! Jane Austen novels are probably my all-time favorite, but I enjoy many genres and authors. I especially like to discuss ideas from what I've read!

Stephanie Plum Series

The Stephanie Plum series was introduced to me by my sister. When I first began reading this series, I thought the characters were pretty silly. However, I've come to look forward to the next book release about this crazy bounty hunter. I hope there will be another one soon!

Books on Vietnam

First Hand Accounts Are My Favorites

Acceptable Loss by Kregg P.J. JorgensonI tend to gravitate towards books about the Vietnam War. My husband was a vet who served from 1969-1972 in Vietnam. While he already had quite a few reference books and videos in his collection, I really enjoy the first-hand accounts. Acceptable Loss is written by a former infantryman, and is quite an interesting view into daily life during the war.

Other first-hand accounts about Vietnam that I've read recently include:

  • Blood Trails: Combat Diary of A Foot Soldier
  • The Killing Zone: My Life in the Vietnam War
  • What It Is Like to Go to War
  • Stalking the Vietcong: Inside Operation Phoenix: A Personal Account
  • The Things They Carried
  • If I Die in a Combat Zone : Box Me Up and Ship Me Home
  • Going After Cacciato

More Pleasurable Reading

Other Types of Books I Enjoy Reading

The Joy of CookingBesides magazines, fiction and Vietnam stories, I like biographies, books on medical issues, and cookbooks. I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 1999, and have a few books on thyroid cancer and treatments in my library for reference. As for cookbooks: A person can never have too many cookbooks! I still have the original copy of "The Joy of Cooking" that I received for my birthday in 1981.

I also like books that provide a bit of history, or provide inside views on people. "Come Quick! Rodger's Had A Fit" was written by George Dolan, a former columnist for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. This book, which was printed in 1970, is a series of funny incidents and pranks that Mr. Dolan reported on in his newspaper column. I remember reading those columns when they came out, so it's quite enjoyable to read them again 40 years later.

The Future of Reading

Will Books Disappear?

I've heard that in the future, books will disappear, and we will all be reading on smart phones, iPads and computer monitors. Some newspapers have already disappeared and book storefronts have shut down. I hate to think the printed page might be replaced as well. But just in case they do become obsolete, I am comforted in the fact that I am surrounded by a multitude of books, so I'll always have something to read!

Thank you so much for taking the time to learn about my passion for reading! I'd like to hear your thoughts on books, and what you believe the future will bring.

I guess if books disappear I shall have to get a Kindle or similar but until then, I am a certified bookworm, thanks. Just like you. Which book shall we eat tonight, hey?

I too love to read. There is times I wish the day is longer so I can read more. I have a nook and books. I love the feel of pages, but when I travel, I do not want to be weighted down with books, so I use my nook. I am finding myself reading my nook more. What a wonderful lens. Thank you.
