My Friend, My Roommate

I got to thinking, "What do I treasure most in my house, and what would I pull out first in case of a fire?" I thought about my cats (they are so precious to me), my photo albums (you can't recapture time), my clothes (afterall, no one wants to see me naked...trust me), but it had to come down to my roommate, Ruby! Of course!

We go way back...

I first met Ruby in 6th or 7th grade, which would have been 1977 or 1978. We met at our middle school. We had both gone to different grade schools in the district. I really don't have memories of her until high school, but she's sure we met sooner, and the way my memory is, I believe her.

Ruby never had things easy. She had to be way more responsible for things than a child should ever have to be. There were many times she would just break down and cry, and it broke my heart. I had a wonderful, easy, fun childhood, so I really couldn't understand at that time what she was truly going through.

One thing I admire about her, though, is that she never took the bad road. She could have rebelled and got into a lot of things, but she became a Christian at the age of 13, and was always a testimony to me (even though I didn't become one until I was 27).

I'm proud of the way she handled things!

The year 2008...

We stayed in touch even out of high school. She moved to Florida, then to Kalamazoo, MI, which is about 1 1/2 hours from here, but we called on occasion and sent cards/letters.

I moved back to Muskegon, MI in 2005 to help my dad, who's health was deteriorating (he died in November of 2007). Ruby moved back around that same time, and was temporarily staying with her mother.

Things were not working out well at her mother's house, and Ruby was struggling more and more to be happy. I had an empty house (except for my many cats), and told her she could stay with me.

She fought it for several months, because she thought her mom needed her, and didnt' want to let her down, but things just kept going downhill. So one day she agreed to stay with me.

I LOVE the company, and she has been a tremendous help to me!!!

This picture of Ruby is from YearbookYourself, when we were goofing around on the computer one day.

Yes, and I don't know what I'd do without them!

Just today I reconnected with a friend and it is soooo great! It is nice that you have my a tribute to a friend...friends are so important. Sometimes time has to go by just to get us to see how important they are. I am giving you a special Valentine's Day Angel blessing for your sharing of Ruby.

Yes...besides Ruby, I have a handful of others who I consider dear, dear friends. I thank God for wonderful friendships!

No, I don't currently have any close friends.

Something I wrote for Ruby...

Ruby...
A dear friend, indeed

Ruby...A precious stone--beautiful, colorful and bright.

Ruby...A precious friend--beautiful, colorful and bright.

Thank you for being such a wonderful friend! Thanks for all you've done for me! God sent me a "gem" when He sent me you.

I love you, my friend!

Great tribute! I think a lot of people take their friends for granted and don't realize that they may not be there one day.
