Welcome to My Squidoo Tips 2

This Squidoo Tips lens will talk about getting you started with your Lens Title, Introduction module and how to add/remove modules, complete with print screens.

Step 1 - Lens Title Module

As soon as I have created a lens, the first thing I do is look at my lens title again. Sometimes I change my mind from when I entered it originally (it might not fit or I might want to change something). As you can see I first entered "My Squidoo Tips 2" when first setting up this lens, and later when at this stage, I changed it to "Squidoo Tips 2 (Modules)"
  1. If you want to change the lens title, click on the orange "Edit" button of this module.

  2. Make your changes.

  3. Click "Save".

Step 2 - Introduction, Contents & Discovery Module

  1. Open the Introduction, Contents & Discovery module by clicking on the orange "Edit" button of this module.

  2. Enter the Lens Intro Title. It may be the same as the Lens Title module or you may want it to be different. My Lens Title is Squidoo Tips 2 (Modules) and my Lens Intro Title is Welcome to My Squidoo Tips 2.

  3. Enter your text to the Lens Description box. When finished, BE SURE to save this first BEFORE you add an image to the Lens Photo. If you enter your text and then upload your Lens Photo, once you upload your image, it saves the image, closing the module and you will LOSE your text.

  4. Open up the module again (by clicking the "Edit" button) and add an image to the Lens Photo. Once you "upload the photo", it will automatically be saved and the module will close.

  5. You can check out the other tabs (Table of Contents and the Discovery Tool) and set to your preferences.

I set the Table of Contents to "Off (decreases clicks and revenue)" as I prefer to use the Table of Contents Module instead, I find it looks nicer on the page.

I set the Discover Tool to "Off (isolate this lens from the Discovery feature)" as I don't like the way this looks on the lens.

Step 2 - Preparing the Modules for your Lens

A newly created lens already includes a preset number of modules, they may be different now, but could include the following modules:

Introduction
RSS
Text
Amazon
Flickr Photos
YouTube vids
Guestbook
Del.icio.us bookmarks
Links Plexo
Amazon Plexo
Google Blog Search
  1. To get started, click on the Add Modules button.

  2. Select your Modules (you might want to make yourself familiar with what they all do).

You will be on the "Starter Package" tab. Hold your cursor over any orange "Add" link, and a menu will pop up to the right and explain what they are.

Did you notice that there are two pages of modules available on the Starter Package tab, so be sure to click on the second page too (YouTube is there). While you are at it, you may also want to check out the other Tabs for additional modules available.

  3. Once you have selected the modules you want to add to your lens, click on the "Preview Lens Layout" button. This will bring up your Lens Layout Preview.

  4. Delete the preset modules you don't want to use that were added by Squidoo.

  5. Drag the remaining modules up or down, in the order you want them to appear. Tip: I suggest having the Guestbook module at the end. Most(not all) lensmasters have the Guestbook module at the bottom of their lens page and where most readers look for it.

  6. If everything looks correct, click on Save.

Complete your Modules

To enter information into any module, click on the "edit" button of the module.

  1. Enter a title for your module, and a sub-title if you like too.

  2. Enter your data in the text box.

  3. Add an optional image from your computer.

  4. When finished, click on "Save" (top or bottom of module).

As you finish each module, be sure to click the "Save" button for that module.

About Tags

To add to or change tags (key words) click on the orange "edit" button for "Tags".

Click "Add More Tags" for as many times as keywords you want to enter.

Add your keywords.

Click on "Save".

Publish your Lens

And lastly, once you are finished all the modules in your lens, click on Publish!

The "Publish" button is on the top and bottom right side of the page.

About your lens being Published

It does take time for a lens to be published, where it shows the green check mark in your Dashboard. There is a difference between having enough modules/content where it says it is published to being published within the Squidoo system.

After you click the Publish button when creating a new lens, if you have enough content/modules, you will see the green message box "Your lens has been published! Want some tips from our Editor on how to boost your LensRank, promote your lens, and reach more people? Click here".

What this means is that if you click on the URL of that lens, that you can see the lens page itself rather than an "under construction" page.

Once it goes through Squidoo system, being published live, you will see your lens with a green check mark in your Dashboard. This usually takes until the following morning, but can sometimes take longer depending on variables I know nothing about LOL.

On weekends, it can sometimes take until Monday morning to be published.

Basically, one must be patient until Squidoo runs the newly created lenses through the system.

Quick Tips

  1. Look at other Lenses to see what they have done for ideas
  2. Adding Tags (keywords) to your Lens increases the chance of others finding your Lens
  3. If you sell several different products, make a lens for each product line
  4. Adding your Lens to related Squidoo Groups will increase traffic to your Lens and Lensrank
  5. Is your lens a little plain? Would you like to dress it up with some really nice images? Try using Google Image search.

So many instructional lenses make it sound almost imparative that we use a variety of modules and include the Discovery option. Good to hear a respected lensmaster say it's OK to skip this on a lens.
