Get Out of Bed! There's A New Day Out There!
When the sun comes up, my walk at dawn is a revitalizing excursion. It's a totally different pleasure in winter compared to springtime sounds and fragrances.
The first rule: Be ahead of the sun. If only by a few minutes.
The smells and sounds of dawn won't be there again all day. It's like the little song featured on this page -

Counting Top 10 Morning Eye Openers
Ritual. A word I thought for a long time only applied to church. How wrong I was. Once I accepted the importance for me of ritual, I became a better person. Ha! That sounds weird. But, it's true.
Morning coffee ritual traverses sleep to wakefulness: Boiling water. Measure the beans or grounds out of the container. And, in my case, take down the coffee press. Scoop the coffee into the press then wait a few minutes for the water to become hot. Then, pour the steaming water over the coffee.
Find little things to do for 60 seconds - pet the dogs, straighten the counter top. Inhale. Exhale.
Press. Pour. Add cream. Sit. Aahh....

Meditate or Pray
Without realizing it, dreams can linger in the form of a mood in the morning.
Add to this how the mind thinks thoughts simply because that's what minds do. Thoughts at random are a bummer of a way to start my day.
Meditation is best: Sit. Breathe.
Inhale. One. Exhale. One.
Inhale. Two. Exhale. Two.
Until I get to 10.
Start over.
Ideally, for about 20 minutes. But, even less, if I really clear my mind of everything except my breathing. The benefits arrive sometimes hours later in the form of, get this: AN ORIGINAL THOUGHT.
Check the weather BEFORE my walk
I feel so smart when I start out in the morning in just a t-shirt, or with an umbrella because I looked to see what weather to expect
"Early In The Morning" by Vanity Fair
A vintage tune with a happy lilt to start my day
Evening - is the time of day
I find - nothin' much to say
Don't know what to do
But I come to -
When it's early in the morning
Over by the window day is dawning
When I feel the air I feel that life is very good to me
You know -
In the sun there's so much yellow
Something in the early morning meadow
Tells me that today you're on your way -You'll be coming home..
Home to me
Night time - isn't clear to me
I find nothing - near to me
Don't know what to do
But I come to -
When it's Early early in the morning
Very, very early without warning
I can feel the newly formed vibrations sneaking up on me -
Again
There's a song bird on my pillow
I can see the bonnie weeping willow
I can see the sun. You're on your way
You'll be coming home . .
Evening - is the time of day
I find nothing - much to say
Don't know what to do
But I come to -

Eat A Healthy Breakfast

I can make it fine with or without lunch. If I've had a long day, I might eat a snack at night. Or, something frivolous like french fries on top of a salad.
But, breakfast is a different matter. Usually an egg and toast and orange juice. That egg makes a huge difference in my mental acuity and physical endurance. Cereal is ok. But, cereal and toast is more than I want. Cereal without toast is not enough.
Often I make french toast if I want a change from the old standby, egg with toast. Egg and a biscuit is yummy. But, too many of those and I have too much tummy.
Do YOU Like A Good Egg?
Go Ahead! Start My Day
I might not be in control of the whole day. But, I can control its start! (Usually)

I always check one astrology site.
Astro.com is amazing. They have educational articles as well as basic information about astrology. You can get a very no-nonsense daily horoscope based on your birth information.
Since I paid $35.00, the annual subscription to more indepth analysis than basic daily horoscope, I feel I can gain a lot of insight into subtle influences on my life.
True astrology is an old science. Someday I predict modern science will honor its beginnings in brilliant students of the stars who lived in the thousands of years Before the Christian Era.

- Check it out. I think you'll be impressed. If you let them know when and where you were born, you can get a free birth-chart reading, daily horoscope and more. Astro.com has a special message just for you.

I'll tell you how the Sun rose -
by Emily Dickinson
I'll tell you how the Sun rose --
A Ribbon at a time --
The Steeples swam in Amethyst --
The news, like Squirrels, ran --
The Hills untied their Bonnets --
The Bobolinks -- begun --
Then I said softly to myself --
"That must have been the Sun"!
But how he set -- I know not --
There seemed a purple stile
That little Yellow boys and girls
Were climbing all the while --
Till when they reached the other side,
A Dominie in Gray --
Put gently up the evening Bars --
And led the flock away --

Consult my calendar so I don't bump into myself

It's far easier to remember to put something on my calendar than it is to refer to it when making plans. Don't you hate it when you see something big as life on your calendar the day after you were supposed to do something!
If I keep the habit of checking it every morning, then I know what's coming. I use a calendar on my computer desk top that is tied into my email. Whenever an event I want to attend comes up in email that has a date, I just click it and it shows up on my calendar.
If someone calls to ask me to do something, I open my calendar right then and plug it in. Or, not.

I might not make it through all the reading and writing waiting for me.

Prioritize.

I usually do this at my desk while I'm looking at the calendar. I ask myself what it is I need to emphasize the most for that day. I know if I am going to be able to concentrate my best thinking, it had better get done before noon. So, that get placed first.
Sometimes it's easy. If there's a deadline, that in itself adds to the degree to which I focus on one task or project. I have such a tendency toward aversion tactics, sometimes I think prioritizing is a lost cause. But, if I didn't at least write down priorities I wouldn't even know when to pat myself on the back for getting with the program. Setting a schedule with priorities and categories of importance, lets me know when I'm as productive as I want to be, or, when a new project has taken over.
As soon as I complete my eye-opener routine, I start writing. Or, if I'm not feeling focused, I read articles online that relate to what I'm working on that day.

Encourage. Welcome. Offer an "Atta Girl! (or "Atta Boy!"

I have quite a list of connections online and in real time. I don't go for the hundreds upon hundreds of so-called "friends" networks, but I do constantly want to find others interested in the things I care about. Encourage them. Welcome them if it's a new participant at some Squidoo Neighborhood. And, try to make people feel important who share my interest, online or in real time, in Emily Dickinson poetry.
I lead a Emily Dickinson International Society interest group that meets twice a month to talk about Dickinson poems. It's just like a group online. Staying in touch means a lot.
Drinking coffee is probably the least healthy of MY TOP 10 EYE-OPENERS.
I'd really like to know what you think. But, it is soooooo much a part of my morning routine.
To Coffee or Not to Coffee??

Get real, it's not Healthy.
hotbrain says:
I think coffee is fine for some people, but it makes me shaky and since I have bipolar disorder it is advisable to avoid caffeine, but I often have green tea in the morning which has a smaller amount of caffeine. Having tea is my first eye opener!
Treasures-By-Brenda says:
Well, I've chosen against coffee because I am a tea drinker.
Jewelsofawe says:
I use to drink quite a few cups of coffee per day, but I had to stop drinking a few years ago. I also quit drinking when I quit smoking because it reminded me of smoking too much.
ulla_hennig says:
I prefer tea. I love the smell of coffee, though.
mbgphoto says:
No coffee for me...but I do have to have a cup of HOT Dr. Pepper to start my day!
Morning Coffee is a Must.
mioluna says:
I can't live without coffee! I drink it 2-3 times in a day. Nobody can prove me that coffee isn't healthy :)
ShirlW says:
A necessary, mood deal breaker, daily ritual for me!
Michey says:
Definitely to coffee as I have strange hours to work, sleep and relax... the problem is I have to keep it at 2 per day... no more
Joan4 says:
Coffee is not only one of my rituals, it is a necessity!
VictoriaTwead says:
I'm English, too, but I have to say that coffee is essential. No part of me functions properly until I've had that coffee fix...

Last But Not Least. In fact, after coffee - my walk comes first.
Go for a walk - early. Really early.
Exercise, yes. Healthy, yes. Those reasons alone would probably not get me dressed and out on the sidewalks and "woodsy trails" first thing. To me, there's nothing to compare with that feel on my skin of morning air. Nothing so intoxicating as breathing the new combinations coming to life before car fumes and sun on pavement and buildings.
I've also noticed people are friendlier in the a.m. Sometimes my dogs and I like to stay close to home, relatively. Other days the urge to take a bike trail into ridiculously far-off scenes cannot be denied. I never know what other early birds will be out and about.
Headlines and stories tell me what kind of world has wakened with me

- I like number 5 and number 1; I don't like number 2, I substitute tea. Number 4 I'm all over with and I could stand to be more regular about number 7. Number 8, too. Used to number 10 more often should get back into the habbit!
Great lens, great list, great wings...congratulations on those, by the way, and have lots of fun exercising them!
