10 Greatest War Movies

Here is a list of My Top 10 War Movies. Yes, you do see twelve there, one honorable mention and well the other one is technically a mini series and not a movie. Besides that, My Top 12 War Movies just doesn't sound as good.
If you have an interest in War Movies or the military you have to see these movies.
I struggled to narrow down my list to the Top 10 War Movies I have seen and this is what I came up with. I hope you find it interesting and informative.

# 10 - Platoon

US Release Date: December 19, 1986

type=textChris Taylor (Charlie Sheen) is a young, naive American who, upon his arrival in Vietnam, quickly discovers that he must do battle not only with the Viet Cong, but also with the gnawing fear, physical exhaustion and intense anger growing within him. While his two commanding officers (Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe) draw a fine line between the war they wage against the enemy and the one they fight with each other, the conflict, chaos and hatred permeate Taylor, suffocating his realities and numbing his feelings to man's highest value... life

# 9 - Tora, Tora, Tora

US Release Date September 23, 1970

type=textA dramatization of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the series of American blunders that allowed it to happen. As told from both the American and Japanese side.

# 8 - Schindler's List

US Release Date: December 15th, 1993

type=textThe true story of Austrian industrialist Oskar Schindler, who harbored Polish Jews during WWII by using them as workers in his factory. Schindler saved 1,100 Jews from certain death.

# 7 - Dos Boot

US Release Date: Febuary 10, 1982

type=textIn 1941, a German U-boat undertakes a dangerous mission from La Rochelle to Spain and back. The Captain, a sensitive man hardened by the responsibility of too many underwater missions, must command and inspire his crew while trying to carry out nearly impossible orders. The Correspondent, a pink-cheeked newcomer, will face more tragedy and horror than he can ever imagine.

Several versions of the film and video releases have been made: The first version to be released was the theatrical 150-minute (2½-hour) cut, released to theatres in Germany in 1981, and in the United States in 1982. It was nominated for six Academy Awards (Cinematography, Directing, Film Editing, Sound, Sound Effects Editing, and Writing).

# 6 - Paths of Glory

US Release Date: January 1, 1957

type=textPaths of Glory is a 1957 American anti-war film by Stanley Kubrick based on the novel of the same name by Humphrey Cobb.[1] Set during World War I, the film stars Kirk Douglas as Colonel Dax, the commanding officer of French soldiers who refused to continue a suicidal attack. Dax attempts to defend them against a charge of cowardice in a court martial.

# 5 - Black Hawk Down

US Release Date: January 18, 2002

type=textThe true story of the United States' involvement in Somalia during an ill-fated humanitarian mission. On October 3, 1993, U.S. soldiers entered Somalia on an exercise that was supposed to take less than an hour. The mission turned into a nightlong battle against thousands of heavily armed Somalians. Eighteen U.S. soldiers and more than 500 Somalians were killed as a result of this conflict.

There is some intense battle scenes in this movie and one of the most gripping for me is when "Grimes" (Ewan McGregor) almost gets hit with a RPG and the sound switches to what it would sound like for him. You got to see that scene.

# 4 - Gettysburg

US Release Date: October 8, 1993

type=textOn July 1, 1863, more than 150,000 soldiers were drawn by fate to the defining moment of the Civil War. Men of honor in an age when honor meant everything, they fought out of loyalty to country or homeland, or to preserve states' rights; many more were moved to the defense of individual freedom. When it was over, a third of their number lay wounded or dead in the quiet wheat fields outside Gettysburg, PA. The Union Army had prevailed. The Republic would survive. Based on Michael Shaara's Pulitizer Prize-winning novel "The Killer Angels," GETTYSBURG dramatically depicts the three most courageous days in American History as experienced by the leaders of the Confederate and Union Armies. The film renders the human dimension of the war with passion and power--from the fierce disagreements of Generals Longstreet and Lee, the brilliant Confederate leaders, to the Union's General Buford, who foresaw the devastation ahead.

# 3 - Full Metal Jacket

US Release Date: June 26, 1987

type=textA pragmatic U.S. Marine observes the dehumanizing effects the Vietnam War has on his fellow Marine recruits from their brutal basic training to the bloody street fighting set in 1968 Hue, Vietnam.

This movie holds a little place in my heart. I seen it in the theater on the 27th exactly 14 days before I left for Marine Corp Bootcamp. Now for those of you have seen the movie you can imagine what was running thru my head and those that have not seen it well see the movie and you will know what I was thinking.

# 2 - Apocalypse Now

US Release Date: January 1, 1979

type=textDuring the Vietnam War, the young American Captain Willard is given the assignment to hunt down and kill one of his own: Colonel Kurtz who has apparently gone insane, murdered hundreds of innocent people, and constructed a strange kingdom for himself deep in the jungle. Willard and his crew embark on a surreal river journey to find Kurtz, meeting along the way a Lieutenant-Colonel who surfs during live combat, Playboy bunnies dropped in by helicopter to entertain rowdy troops, and the inhabitants of a French plantation trapped in colonial times.

I have to admit the first time I seen this movie I was not that impressed, I actually was really confused by the whole thing. When I got a few years older I watched it again and understood a little better and it moved to the top of my list of great movies.

# 1 - Saving Private Ryan

US Release Date: July 24, 1998

type=textJames Ryan, who has parachuted into France during the Allied invasion of Europe, has just lost three brothers in combat. Government policy dictates that he should return home lest his family be deprived of all its male offspring. A team of soldiers, led by Captain John Miller and fresh from the beaches of Normandy, is assembled to find and save Private Ryan.

Towards the beginning of the movie the storming of the beach is bruttle and a bit gory, although it has been said is very realistic. In my opinion this scene can not be missed if you want to see what war is really like.
Through the movie we see men face the horrors of war and react in many ways. So gripped with fear that they can do nothing, pushed to murder as some would call it, and some moved to fearlessness that some would call recklessness.

Honorable Mention - The Pianist

US Release Date: December 27th, 2002

type=textAn adaptation based on the autobiography of the acclaimed Polish composer, Wladyslaw Szpilman, who detailed his survival during World War II, and narrowly escaped a roundup that sent his family to a death camp. A composer and pianist, Szpilman played the last live music heard over Polish radio airwaves before Nazi artillery hit. There, in Poland, Szpilman struggled to stay alive--even when cast away from those he loved. He spent the duration of the war hiding in the ruins of Warsaw and scavenging for food and shelter. Szpilman eventually reclaimed his artistic gifts, and confronted his fears--with aid from the unlikeliest of sources.

Technically A Mini Series - Band of Brothers

First aired in 2001 on HBO

type=textThe Band of Brothers miniseries details, if at times exaggerated or condensed, the real-life exploits of Easy Company during World War II over the course of ten episodes, starting with their jump training at the Currahee training site in Toccoa, Georgia and ending with the capitulation of Germany. The experiences of Major Richard Winters (1918-2011) are a primary focus, as he attempts to keep his men together and safe. While the series stars a large ensemble cast, episodes generally feature one character prominently, following their particular actions during certain events (for example, the Siege of Bastogne and Operation Market Garden).

Band of Brothers series was nominated for 19 Emmy Awards and won 6 plus a Golden Globe to name a few awards.

Here you will see the story of many heros. Although I have never once heard or even read of anyone admitting to being a hero these men were true heros in every sence of the word. Watching this series I totally understand why these men and all the others that fought in WWII were given the title of "The Greatest Generation". Everyday we are losing more and more of these great men, if you are given the honor to meet one of these men, make sure to thank them and let them know just how important they are and that they forever will be remembered for all they sacrificed.
