Our Home School
"For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them." - Aristotle
I've been home schooling my two girls for the past six years. My oldest will be a junior looking forward to college. My youngest is a freshman just starting her high school years. Both have done well, and I owe much of our success to finding the right curriculum for their learning style and interests. I'm very much into project-based learning, or as I would like to call it, experiential learning. Learning that takes place by actually doing and not just reading about your subject. Hands-on learning has been the cement that has glued the facts studied to their long term memory.
I am a product of the public school system. Although, I managed to make great grades, and move on through college, much of what I had learned through school, I lost over time. I want a different experience for my daughters. I want them to experience learning and develop a love for learning and I believe that project-based or experiential learning is what is working for them.
My daughters started out in public school until 4th and 2nd grades. For various reasons, we decided at the start of their 5th grade and 3rd grade year to home school. This has been a choice that we have not regretted.
I'll be adding to this lens over time. Please come back often as I work to expand this lens.

Hands-On Science Projects
Products we've used and loved in our learning.
Other Great Science Websites
- Science Take Out
- This site has great short-term projects that offer students a peak into real life scenarios. We did the one testing cholera as we were getting ready to travel to Zimbabwe after they had their cholera epidemic. Wonderful learning experience!
Great Science Curriculum
We've found that Apologia curriculum works well for my daughters. The author, Jay Wyle, has a way of explaining science principles in a way that is both easy to understand and interesting. When my youngest daughter started with Apologia, I purchased the audio CD so that she could read along with the audio. It made life easier for me as well as helped her reading skills. We've used the following books from Apologia:
Science Fairs
My girls compete every year in our local science fair. They have competed at the state level several years and my oldest daughter had competed in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair her freshman year of high school. Science fairs are the most realistic learning projects for research based science careers. Science fairs force the student to think, to organize, to test, validate and present their results. Homeschool Blogs and Websites
- Kit and Caboodle
- My own blog that features our life as a home school family.
- Yarns of the Heart
- My favorite unschooling blog.
- Born to Learn, Free to Learn
- Homeschool on the Edge of Nowhere
Saxon Math Curriculum
We've used Saxon Math products throughout our home school years. Saxon has made it easy for me to teach math even through the high school years. They provide detailed lessons and CD's that explain the math concepts presented. My girl's highest standardized test scores are in Math. I beleive that this curriculum has a lot to do with their good scores.
