My Writing Goals for 2012

My Writing Goals - This Year and Last Year

I've been thinking of some writing projects, but had not prioritized or formalized what I want to achieve in 2011. Squidoo challenged us to commit our writing goals in a lens. In creating this webpage and putting five goals out for all the world to see, I already felt more of a commitment to these projects.

Now it is 2012, so I've updated the successes and changes to the goals for 2011. New goals are in place and it's time to go to work.

In the past, I found it helpful to list the intermediate steps towards goals. By breaking them down into smaller chunks, they seem more achievable to me.

Writing Goals for 2012

2012 Goal: Create Two Squidoo Lenses a Week

That's 104 more lenses for a total of 568 by December 31, 2012

I'll aim for a mix of sales lenses (40%), personal lenses (50%), and charity lenses (10%).

2011 Goal: Create Two Squidoo Lenses a Week
That's 104 more lenses for a total of 409 by December 31, 2011

Final Result on This 2011 Goal:

110 lenses published from January through October. Check my Calendar of Lenses to see the specifics.
I've reached this goal, with 2 months to spare.
By the end of 2011, I had 464 lenses (plus gave away a few). The goal was to reach 409 lenses.

Will I Fall Short, Meet the Goal or Exceed the Goal of 104 Lenses?

What's Your Prediction for 2012?

vallain predicts:

I predict that I'll exceed the goal of 104 new lenses in 2011.

ZodiacImmortal predicts:

I think You'll meet the goal

Zut_Moon predicts:

that you will easily meet the Squidoo Quarterly Challenge as well which starts in 2012. However, I think you are a tad short from being able to break 600. Breaking 550 is within your reach and I expect you will do that. In fact, I predict at the end of 2012 you will have 573 lenses ...

gottaloveit predicts:

You will well exceed your goal. I expect no less from my mentor.

JoanneOtt predicts:

you will certainly achieve what you set out to do.

SereneSea predicts:

You are a person of strong convictions, you will definitely meet your goals.

2012 Goal: Research, Write and Self-Publish a Book

about my Civil War ancestor

This is a project I'm working on with my mother. As of January 1, 2012, I have 33 lenses containing my research from last year. I'll be expanding each of these and adding new lenses as I go. I'm considering creating another Squidoo account to hold all of these.

Countdown to Deadline for Reaching the Goals

Last Year's Goals - 2011

2011 Goal: Work on Links for My Squidoo Lenses

Create 30 backlinks a month

I've been pretty helter-skelter about creating backlinks. For 2011, I'll work on this weekly.
The original goal I set was to spend one hour a week on this. Because I create backlinks here and there as I work on lenses or surf the Internet, it seems more practical to quantify it. I can then see if I'm meeting my goal.

Goal Update - May 4, 2011

Posted on List My Five every day in January - March. With each list, I put 5 resource links to my related Squidoo lenses. In March, created 83 backlinks. I signed up for Social Monkee too and will start putting lenses into that. For May, I'm creating links on Redgage (top lenses first).

2011 Goal: Self-Publish a Book about Bertha McGhee's Life

This is a project that I'm collaborating with my mother on

Step One: Scan in pictures from Bertha's photo albums
Step Two: Pursue leads for more information from relatives
Step Three: Word process 40 years of Bertha's letters
Step Four: Edit Bertha's essays, journal notes and letters
Step Five: Put photos and text into Blurb software

Update on this goal - May 2011

Mom rounded up more letters from various relatives. I've started transcribing those. We sorted Mom's photo stash and scanned in many old ones of Bertha. I've made a timeline of Bertha's life and activities. Am sidetracked right now compiling my sister's poetry book.

Update - End of 2011

I finished my sister's poetry book and it is available at blurb.com. The title is Prairie Woman Poems.
My mother and I decided to put Bertha's book away for a year so I could work on my Civil War ancestor during the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War. So far, I've created 33 web pages (Squidoo lenses) on that topic with the research I'm doing.

2011 Goal: Give My Lenses a Little Love

Goal: Edit and update 3 lenses per day

On most of them, I at least need to fix up the tags, now that I'm using Fuffanutta's SquidUtil Add-On for Firefox. I'll run the health check too. In many cases I need to relabel my introduction photo and improve my title.

Update on this goal...

For the month of January, I updated 61 lenses. That falls short of my goal of 93 updates for the month. Some lenses had several updates, but those don't count. Updated 72 in February and 52 in March. Updated 50 more in April.

End of Year Update: I found this difficult to track and doubt that I came anywhere near the goal.

2011 Goal: Introduce 3 Friends to Squidoo

Get them started, then coach them until they can work independently

Lensmasters That Signed Up through Me for Squidoo

Check out the Lenses These Newbies Have Made

I'm just featuring the ones who actually went ahead and made a lens.

Lensmasters That I've Lured over from eHow

Some were signed up for Squidoo already but not active. I'm trying to inspire them and it is gratifying to see the new lenses they are making.
Quite a few of them have made Giant Squid already and several had Lens of the Day. Two lensmasters in this group had a lens selected in the top 11 lenses for 2011 on Squidoo. I'm thrilled with how well they are all doing here.

My Writing Friends That I've Started on Squidoo in 2011

In April I gave a workshop for 7 writing friends on creating a lens and using Squidoo. Here are four of them who have gotten started.

I agree with the mouse pad. Though what if you have 2-3 favorite pens depending on what you are writing? a letter, poems story?
  • Zut_Moon Dec 27, 2011 @ 2:56 am | delete
Maybe I should use sticky notes on some of my lenses... OH, and I need a Countdown Clock as well ... I'm learning more and more everyday ...

My favorite pen not only writes my idle thoughts before they escape, but also on occasion serves as a spoon to stir my tea. I am about to start my own lens for my writing, so thanks for the inspiration. Peace.
