Poetry and Photography: My Books

Poetry and Photography: this is my story on how I came to combine these two forms of Art, eventually displayed them in my books: Rhyming Images of which I have self pubished 5 so far and number 6 is on its way. I started writing English Poetry in 2001, when I joined an American Poetry website Passion in Poetry (piptalk.com) and I have been writing in English ever since. It's a beautiful language to write poetry in. I'm not a professional, but a dedicated and passionated amateur. I like to capture the nature around me and write poetry to my photos.

I joined a photography website where I could upload my photos. I don't use it anymore now, but my photos are still sitting there Titia on Usefilm.com. Later on I joined another photo website where you can roam through my photos Titia on Pbase.com

A few years later I joined the poetry website AllPoetry.com because they let me make my own backgrounds and tags to go along with my poetry.

Photography and Poetry = Rhyming Images

First there was Poetry. I've written poetry for as long as I can remember, mostly though to express my feelings when I was a teen and young adult and even in my adult life, when I have to deal with stress, I often write down what's inside my mind. It calmes me down and make me see things in perspective again, because before I write down the truth as I see it , I have to think about it. I was a loner and had trouble speaking my mind out loud in that time, so writing it down was much easier.

It was only in 2001 (I think) that we got our first digital camera, a Kodak and that camera opened the photographic world for me. I live in the midst of beautiful nature, with 1/3 land and 2/3 sky which changes color every moment of the day in each season. I like to capture nature's moments. In theory I know what shutterspeed is and aperture, but somehow my brain goes dead when I have to actually put that into practice. So when I see what I see, I just press the button in automatic.

Then one day I was looking at a photo and words popped up in my mind and as I write rhyming poetry most of the time, I called it a Rhyming Image.

Knocked over smoothly by your Art

One of my favorite poems

Aquarel made by my husband.

A flight in air, my spirit free,
roaming skies, my love you'll be.
Colourful in splash of ink,
deep in your heart, my soul will sink.

A watching eye, protectively,
in the flight of love, I can be me.
Down hill to top, our lives progress,
with no more secrets to confess.

When life will end, I'll roam the air,
my spirit free in loving care.
I'm a raptor, but dove by heart,
knocked over smoothly by your art.

Unrafelling your Thoughts

I like to write poems to my own photographs

Poem: An Orator, a Poet, a Photographer

I like to speak, I like to write, I like photography
and the fact that I'm active in all three disciplines,
should make me an Orator, a Poet and a Photographer,
in the basic meaning of the word.

But....

That's not enough, I'd say,
just writing words that rhyme.
I do it all the time and I am not a Poet,
at least I think I'm not today.

Maybe tomorrow, when I've learned,
to use my words excessively,
impressively and agressively,
to make a statement of some kind,
maybe then I've earned,

to call myself a Poet.

Until then, I'm just an ordinary woman,
one of middle age,
who loves to capture moments
and let them free again.

But....

only when I feel the urge,
to put some order in the chaos
of my mind.
I call them Rhyming Images,
when my tongue and vision
merge,
on paper white.

About the Poet Marge Tindal

Tribute to my dear friend Marge Tindal

PMarge Tindal was one of the poets I met on piptalk.com and she became my friend for life after meeting her in 2002, when I travelled the USA to meet some of the poets I had met on the website.
She was a very talented poet, who wrote thousands of poems in her own style. She loved full moons and when she passed away on January 26, 2009, I wrote her a moon poem each month on full moon in the way she would have liked it. In a tribute to her memory, I've collected all her moon poems and put them in a book as a memory gift for her children, including my own farewell moon poems.

A few more of Titia's Poems

2002 Sanford, Florida, USA

I took a masters class today,
in nature's art gallery.
As am just an amateur,
a pro I'll never be--

but nature has caught my soul
and in her beauty I will drown,
while she's dancing passionately
in her colorful gown.

So here I am, an amateur,
flirting with a pro.
Sometimes she flirts back to me,
performing a lightening show.

Take me back to yesterday

Take me back to yesterday, or even the days before,
to sunshine and to happiness and maybe something more.
Today is not my day you know, today is dark and gray
and even if you smile at me, I won't come out to play.

Take me back to yesterday, when I was a little child,
I could roam the pastures then, full of flowers wild.
Today is not my day you know, for pastures are no more,
large buildings placed on land you see, which was green before.

Take me back to yesterday, when loved ones weren't dead,
when I could hear them talking real, not only in my head.
Today is not my day you know, my head is full of voices,
constant ordering me around, I have to make some choices.

Take me back to yesterday and I'll just skip tomorrow
and maybe I forget about, the gray and dark and sorrow.
Today is not my day you know, but you can change that fast,
if you'll take me back to yesterday, I'm sure I'll make it last.

I can't help but catching Nature's Moments

and write the words from my heart

A Little Play on an Old Rhyme

To market, to market...

The original poem:

To market, to market, to buy a fat pig,
Home again, home again, jiggety jig.
To market, to market, to buy a fat hog,
Home again, home again, jiggety jog.

My playful versions:

To market, to market to buy a fat pig
and at the barber, I'll buy him a wig.
He has to be handsome, he has to be clean,
the cleanest pig you've ever seen.

To market, to market to buy a fat horse,
with teeth in his mouth and legs of course.
I'll put him up front, in the garden that is,
when you come visit, you hardly can miss.

To market, to market to buy a fat cook,
with love in his heart and a crazy look,
He juggles with food, while drinking tea,
making dinner for horsie, piggy and me.

A Christmas Poem

After World War II my father had to serve in Indonesia for three years. I was just born when he left, so I only 'knew' him by his picture on the coffee table. Some months ago I was strolling through the old family albums and found this photo of my mom and me with my two sisters, sitting at the table at Chrismas 1946. I'm the little one in the middle.

Gathered 'round, on this here night,
reading books at candle's light.
Sweet memories of Christmas far,
one year after second World War.

Gathered 'round in feel of love,
unaware of angels above.
A little twig, the spirit there,
sweet memories of loving care.

My father, he was far away,
in Indonesia he had to stay.
He came home real bruised but whole,
he gave nurture to my soul.

One candle and a little twig,
made our Christmas still real big,
Gathered 'round, some candies sweet,
the Christmas Spirit, what else you need.

    Photos in Flight

    Your words are weak
    your words are strong
    with a passonate tweak
    emerges your heart song.
    *
    Watch the words
    that pass your lips
    like magical birds
    with wings clipped.
    *
    Time put in
    a well spent endeavor
    picture, paper, pen
    she's oh so clever.
    *
    There's no magic
    photos and words
    nothing tragic
    just unclipped birds.

Your images are so very charming. My daughter writes a lot of poetry and I think your art style would suit her words and images very much. I will suggest to her that she experiment with this style when she has more free time.

This is inspiring. I love photography and had wondered what to do with all the lovely images. Guess I'll have to start writing poems to go with them.

I hope you'll make a lens about your mom and her computer. People are always amazed at my mom (87) using the computer. She scans old photos and sends them to me by email.
