Learn from My Facebook Experience, apply the Techniques, do Good, and make money every step of the way!

While my South Park-esque picture (on your left) is reserved strictly for online message board, and forum, usage, Facebook has grown to become one of my more 'professional' outlets: bearing a similar personal picture like my Squidoo Lenses (on your right). I have used Facebook to achieve just about everything from creating a strictly personal experience, while also complementing that with a variety of techniques that I have applied to promote myself, and my business, by successfully Marketing on Facebook. Amidst my well-thought out 'attempts' at humor, this Squidoo Lens is about My Facebook Experience, and will be written in order to accomplish a truly unique feet. Whether you have your own website, a Squidoo Lens, a large (or small) blog, a Zazzle/Cafepress store, or some other product/business or venture, you can apply these techniques to gain quite a bit of traffic and exposure to these things that you are passionate about.

My character is clearly salivating, and, for good reason. Either it's because of my outdated underestimate of a pie graph, my awesome personal list of outstanding resources, my delectable Chocolate-Covered Strawberries or......

He knows just the wealth of information that this Squidoo Lens contains, and, he knows that, if you so choose to read further, that you may find yourself holistically enlightened with a variety of ideas, and techniques, that you can apply to get the most out of your Facebook experience, as well as, maybe even make some money along the way. (With the economy the way it is, who couldn't use a little extra cash in their pockets?) Government bailouts are reserved for those who are too big and influential to fail, so, unless you are sitting pretty on billions of dollars, this Squidoo lens will teach you just how you can utilize Facebook to benefit you (and, others, as well, but, we'll talk about that later!) Conveniently, popcorn and soda are waiting for you just a few modules down!

Although, I admit, Facebook has intentionally limited it's functionality in certain arenas, there are STILL little things that you can do to exploit their platform's functionality, to it's fullest, without violating any of their Terms of Service (TOS). Unlike many websites, this Squidoo Lens won't tease you, all the way to the end, only to offer you an E-book excessively priced over $50 . IF you commit to reading this Squidoo Lens, to the very end, I promise you that you'll leave with a variety of quality ideas and techniques that you can apply, on your own, to make the most ($$$) of your Facebook Experience!

the Basics

....before we proceed.

For those who have never actually created a Facebook Group, this is a great YouTube video that teaches you just how to start, and build, one. Unfortunately, based on my own experience of building a successful Facebook Group, to where it currently is at 240,000+ members, the creator of this video fails to mention some ideas that I would deem expressly unique to myself, and to my experience. My ideas will help you gain significant traffic to your Squidoo lens, everyday. For this reason, I ask that, once you watch this video, that you stick with me and continue reading this Squidoo Lens, for your own benefit.

NOTE: This video is almost 10 minutes long. For those who don't have the time to watch it, I have extracted a bulleted list of great things he has mentioned:

  • Facebook Groups allow you to engage, interact, and form relationships with massive numbers of people
  • Consider making your group as 'generic', as possible, by not outright peddling products or services.
  • Utilize Facebook's Groups' functionality to help provide information to others.
  • Create a Community by offering free products and/or services.
  • When your Facebook Group begins to go viral, you can do what I did: arrange for actual companies to provide products, to give away to your members, in return for, say, a month of free advertisement.
  • Apply the "Law of Reciprocity": When you give to your users, it'll come back to you, in the form of increased loyalty and willingness to actually promote your group, for you!
  • Regardless of who you voted for in the last U.S. election, had you (or I...) created a Facebook Group called '1,000,000 Strong for Obama (or McCain)', you could have placed direct clickable links to your Cafepress, or Zazzle, store, and, I assure you, even as it became viral....gaining hundreds of new members everyday....some of those members would have been interested in your store!
  • If you create a group, and let it stagnate, NOONE will come back. (I'll let you know how I keep my Facebook Group exciting and fresh, later!)
  • The creator of this video recommends leaving all your group's features "ON", however, I have some different views about this, which I'll discuss later)
  • We WANT to do everything possible to gain new members to our Group, as well as, visit repeatedly!

the Social Networking Empire

an Endless Debate.

While a new era of technological fascination and social networking is upon us, the debate rages on amongst all those who have utilized the service(s) of either Facebook or MySpace, or, perhaps, BOTH. Even though charts and graphs depict the increasing popularity of Facebook's service(s), MySpace has remained a formidable opponent in the realm of social networking: captivating the hearts and minds of a massive, influential population.

When it comes down to it, what matters the most is what YOU think. So.......have you remained loyal to your MySpace, or has your valuable time (that ever-prescious resource), shifted more and more towards the seemingly more 'professional' look, feel, and interactivity of Facebook's platform(?)

Which social networking site do you like best(?): MySpace or Facebook(?) and, most importantely, WHY(?). The debate rages on!

Which do you like best: Facebook(?) vs. MySpace(?)

I like MySpace better!

submerged-arc says:

Myspace is better for business. It's customizable and no caps to the amount of friends you can have. Facebook limits to 5000.

laurenruiz05 says:

Myspace. Facebook is too invasive. I will admit though, that though I have a FB account I have only been on it twice.

Taylor Rhodes says:

Myspace is my top choice.
However, I would recommend Facebook to those who have difficulty understanding the internet or components of it. It is generally more simple and much more organized, making it suitable for a much broader group of people than Myspace. Its also less time consuming and has more features for those interested in networking.
But if you are gifted in HTML, Myspace will probably be your better option. It allows you to be more creative and express yourself in different ways. You can do pretty much anything on Myspace.. it also helped me get better at HTML! Once you understand the basic codes, you can do pretty much everything! I personally create or design everything on my page, making my own layouts and comment boxes. Once you figure it out, Myspace really is quite fun! :)

Jeanne says:

I can keep track of what my kids are doing and who they're associating with.

K.Charanyanond says:

Myspace

ClareEvitts says:

Facebook is great but I think Myspace will make a come back! Retro is cool remember! I've found myself using it a lot more again! Bring back Myspace!

Canbyte says:

The only reason to have a page is to be found! Duh. Google can't find anything on Facebook, even causes. How dumb is that? Myspace seems to let Google find pages. Try it yourself.

Maura46 says:

I just started using MySpace about 5 months gao. I really like how I can create a beautiful gallery to showcase my work. I can't be as creative with Facebook. Even so, I am looking forward to trying out Facebook to display my work as well. I'm sure it has some features that MS doesn't have. Good to take advantage of both, I suppose. We'll see how it goes...

Kyle says:

You can express yourself better.

Temp_Girl says:

I'd have to say that I'm ultimately a Myspace person, mostly because it has a good blogging feature that really gets you out there and that I've had excellent success with. But then again, some of the Myspace population ... oy! They're a different generation than me, I think. :) Facebook presents more professionally; additionally, I like the various ways that you can control your privacy there. One thing I don't like about Facebook are the account hacks -- FB PTB have had to change my password twice already. Seems the more active you are on FB, the more hacks you seem to incur.

pilegirl says:

I have a Myspace page. I have heard of Facebook, but don't know any more about it than I have read on this lens.
From what I've read, maybe I should check into it.

CarrieRawks says:

I prefer MySpace as it seems a little more user friendly and you can make your profile look different (just wish people would get those videos not to auto play!) lol

Lizblueberry says:

I like Myspace better because I am able to attract more traffic and have felt limited by Facebook. Just started using the group area of Facebook. Hope I can figure it out!

Apex-Professionals-LLC says:

Myspace is just more customizable. With facebook you really dont have much granular control on the overall look and feel. Sure they have lots of optional sections and modules, but if you want to really make it your own with graphics and custom layouts you can pretty much forget it. Also facebook catered only to college students for so long that most of the cool kats are already on myspace ;-)

spirituality says:

I'll go for myspace, because it does still get my lenses and websites traffic. But I have to admit that facebook is better at keeping me engaged - and that's probably true for more people. Automatically posting my tweets as updates on facebook is a big help towards keeping my facebook profile current.

I like Facebook better!

bloomingrose says:

My teenage boys prefer it as a more intelligent way to communicate and I defer to their superior Internet experience. :)

DoraArtDesignStudio says:

I have to say FB since I never tried Myspace, which I thought was for kids. I have a business page at facebook to stream visitors to my etsy shop.http://www.facebook.com/pages/ArtDesign-Studio-by-Dora/94421108138?ref=ts

5178designs says:

Oh goodness, I ditched Myspace a while ago. I love Facebook! I also have a fan page: Please visit my Facebook page "OOPSY" at: http://www.facebook.com/pages/OOPSY/117915615184?ref=nf

You can also check out my store at: http://www.zazzle.com/bd5178*

eclecticeducation says:

Since most of my friends are on Facebook, I tend to do more there than at Myspace.

thegreenninja says:

I can't help it...I like the streamlined look of Facebook over all the crap on myspace. Maybe I'm getting old.

ZoeSPEAK says:

Facebook 'cause that's where my friends are (and someone at Zazzle invited me).

Rico2008 says:

It seems to be more professional than MySpace which is more laid back in IMHO.

x3xsolxdierx3x says:

I'm still partial to Facebook..... :)

Rose C Martens says:

Facebook

leperrine says:

Facebook is better just the flow of the page and the feel. A true networking platform.

HorseFan says:

I never had a MySpace account so it's kinda' hard for me to fairly judge. But I am using Facebook and liking it, so it gets my vote.

MikesWorld says:

Facebook for me. I find it an ideal platform to share my photos with my friends with very little fuss. Before FB I was in the process of creating a personal website from scratch to show off my holiday and party pix, which seemed simple in principle but a lot of work in reality, or alternatively copying to discs for people. Don't have to do that anymore, thanks FB!

BarbRad says:

Facebook seems more fitting to my age. My Space just doesn't fit my style.

rnhealthinfo says:

fb

tlcsilverjewelry says:

On Facebook I can go "home" and see what all my friends have been doing in 1 place. On Myspace you pretty much have to go visit their walls. And Myspace has a trashy image so lots of my family and friends would never join where they have no qualms about joining Facebook.

JoannaVaiou says:

Facebook. It is just nicer

beclynne says:

cconiam says:

Even you can master Facebook.....

....one popcorn kernel at a time.

Assuming that you were able to read all the way through my rather lengthy Squidoo Lens introduction (yes, I know, it has alot of words....), now may be a good time to break out a nice bowl of popcorn. Rest assured, my modules don't get any shorter after this, however, Facebook is a massive pandora's box filled with near-unlimited potential, if understood, and utilized, correctly. This fact, alone, I hope will captivate you and keep you salivating for more (just like my South Park character, or one of Pavlov's dogs).

In the event that I bore you, and you don't want to read further (completely understandable), if we are to part ways, just know these things:

  • You can use Facebooks' Groups platform to drive considerable traffic to your website and/or Squidoo lens.
  • I use my 240,000+ member Facebook Group to do just that. My Facebook Group has grown by 500-1,000 new members, everday, consistently for over a year, as evidenced by the growth statistics that I have taken for my group since creating it.
  • Imagine how much traffic you could gain for your website(s) or Squidoo Lens(es) if you could give your Facebook group enough of an appeal to make it go insanely viral?
  • You can harness the incredible power of community, in order to create a logo to give your Facebook group the type of appeal that becomes viral, amongst Facebook's worldwide platform of over 175,000,000 active users!
  • I include direct, clickable (and relevant) links in my Facebook Groups' Description, as well as, within the link placement functionality that Facebook offers. This means that if you have a Squidoo lens about LOVE, or a dating website, you may want to consider creating a Facebook Group called something like "1,000,000 Strong for Lovers Worldwide".
  • In the unfortunate event that something happens to your Facebook account (disabled?), one of the very first things you should consider doing is assigning at least two or three fellow administrators. If your account is ever deleted, and you are the only admin assigned to it, then your Facebook Group will simply cease to exist. No matter how big it is, or how long you worked on building its membership, adding additional administrators to your Facebook Group can serve as an easily applied insurance policy, of sorts.
  • I tailor the general theme of my Squidoo Lens(es) to meet the theme of my Facebook Group(s). Because of this, my links are welcomed with open arms, and viewed as a 'resource' by avid group members.
  • I contact creators, and admins, of other similar Facebook groups, to see if they will include a link to my group, in their group. This isn't always successful, however, it doesn't hurt to try.
  • I utilize well-thought-out, and creative, open-ended questions as the subject line for threads that are created within my Facebook group. Members will frequently contribute their own opinions, when you offer them the opportunity to do so.
    • "Come see dirty pictures of me!"
    • "What do YOU think about the economy?"
    • "Best deals ever on Viagra!"
    • "Welcome! Introduce Yourself!"
    • "Buy ________ for only $19.95!"
    • "How did you find our group?"
    • "Look at my Company!"
    • "What do you think of this Group, so far?"
    • "Find the lowest prices on ____ right here!"
    • "What do you think of this issue?" (Healthcare, etc...)
  • Once your Facebook Group gets off the ground, you can utilize Facebook's Pages' Platform to complement, and drive traffic to, your Facebook Group.
  • NOTE: There are some limitations inherent to the functionality of both Facebook Groups', and Pages', Platform. This is precisely why the best combination is an intelligent, and creative, approach, that utilizes as many aspects of Facebook's website, concurrently, to stake a claim (and, an influence) over as many members as you can. I will discuss those later, as well as, in my other, complementary, Squidoo Lens(es).

My Personal List of Resources

....that I use in conjunction with my Facebook Groups!

Before even delving completely into how I utilize Facebook's Groups' Platform to make alot of money, I would like to provide you with an exhaustive list of resource links that I personally use in conjunction with my execution of a successful, viral, Facebook Group.

NOTE: These resources aren't presented in any particular order of importance. I have used all of them, and could NOT have made my Facebook Groups a success ($$$$) without them!
#1) Create a Squidoo Lens + Display a direct, clickable link to your Squidoo Lens = Make $$$$$$
For those who may be unfamiliar with Squidoo, this is an absolutely FREE (Seriously....it is....) platform by which the everyday-Joe (You + Me) can create a website, express yourself, while promoting business, your products, and, of course, yourself.

Facebook's Groups' Platform allows emplacement of direct, clickable, links, in your "Group Description", and a direct link to your Squidoo Lens(es) can be placed there! Further down on this lens, I will teach you how I have made my Facebook Group go VIRAL, and how you can exploit it, by driving traffic to your own website, or Squidoo Lens. This can equate to EASY money for you, if executed correctly!
#2) the Logo Company: Branding Your Facebook Group!
Further down on this Squidoo Lens, I speak specifically about the importance of branding your Facebook Group. This is the particular company that I have used to do this, for several of my Facebook Groups, for a variety of reasons. This doesn't mean that you have to use the same company, however, you may find difficulty finding another logo design company that offers you the same quality of work for the lowest prices I've seen in my search for a better company.

I have used this company a total of 6 times for various other projects of mine. Personally, I would check out their Testimonials section to see if it's right for you.

If not, you can always attempt to create your own Facebook Group Logo.
#3) the Linkshare Affiliate Network
For those who are familiar with the structure and functionality that Facebook offers with their Facebook Groups, you may know that they offer a section that allows up to three link placements. As a creator, and admin, of your group, you will have the option and ability to control what actually gets posted in this section. While you may decide to allow this section to stay open for all your group members to post their own links, you may also decide to leave this section locked--only to display the links that you provide.

Making money on Facebook Groups, in my honest opinion, would be very difficult without the thoughtful placement of affilliate links that somewhat match the content you are providing. Through Linkshare, you can essentially team up with hundreds of companies, many of which pay outstanding affiliate commissions and will complement your group theme well.
#4) Consolidated List of Books about Facebook
It's up to YOU (the Reader) to determine just how much you actually 'get out' of my writing, and can apply to your own personal marketing/promotional strategies. Where I leave off, though, these books can fill in the gaps. While I've read quite a few of them myself, I can't vouch for all of them, so I highly recommend that you read the user's/reader's reviews there on Amazon!

Determining your Passion

....is the first step to Facebook Success!

For all you chocolate lovers out there, let the rich, delectable, content on this Squidoo Lens captivate your taste-buds to the fullest. Whether your passion be indulging in the latest array of comfort foods, traveling, or, perhaps, politics, prior to making your Facebook Group, it's imperative that you determine these passions. There are, however, many things that you must consider, if you would like for your Facebook group to be a lasting, and beneficial, success.

In all practical application, the 'goal' you set for your Facebook Group should be directly reflected in your group name, as well as, your group picture, or logo (Need help creating a LOGO? I highly recommend you jump over to a community called the 'crowdSPRING' Community, where 13,000+ designers will compete to meet your request, at whatever price you set for your project(s)!). Mild controversy ensues with regards to what your goal should actually be, but, we'll cover that in our NEXT section.

For now, not only is it imperative that your Facebook Group be a reflection of your passion, but, it is also absolutely necessary that your Passion be something others share, as well. If we are to make the most of your Facebook Group, and further develop it into a marketing and promotional machine, you MUST make it appealing to others. Remember, we want to absolutely always encourage the concept of virality with regards to the consistent, daily, membership growth of your Facebook Group. This doesn't mean that you should 'sacrifice' your passion, in order for people to like your Facebook group, however, if you can find a 'happy-medium' that has somewhat of a universal appeal, that is always the most optimum and ideal situation.

When people visit your Facebook Group, they must:

  • Be interested in it.
  • Be instantly attracted to the appeal of your Group LOGO, or picture.
  • Be willing to read through your, hopefully 'Catchy' Group Description.
  • Be actively engaged enough, by your limited opportunity to impress them, that they'll, without question or thinking twice, be willing to INVITE all their friends.
  • Become loyal to you, to your Facebook Group, and to your cause.
  • Be enthusiastic about spending their time, on your Facebook Group.
  • Be willing to translate that loyalty into return visits, and, of course, unhindered and unimpeded interest in whatever YOU, as the group creator, recommends or posts

Tap into the Viral Power of Facebook Video Tutorial

Brought to you by Internet Marketer, Jeff Johnson.

Months after building this Squidoo Lens, I stumbled across this 7-video YouTube series created by an internet marketer named Jeff Johnson. While these training videos provide a great foundation of information concerning the ability to leverage the viral nature of Facebook's platform, in this Squidoo Lens, I have expounded upon many of the concepts that he presents, as well as, I have provided many new insights that were derived directly from personal experience.

Many, who have had Facebook accounts already, will be familiar with the basic features that he describes. Even still, you may have been using these features for months, but, you may have had no idea about their marketing and advertising capabilities. Before you read the rest of this Squidoo lens, I do highly recommend that you watch these videos!

Social Media Marketing: An Hour a Day

The hype surrounding this book has still maintained. Even in late 2008, buyers had anticipated the release of this book by waiting over 3 months, on a waiting list.

I don't care who you are....

....you are never too old to use Facebook!

Just a few days ago, not only did my mother and father decide to join Facebook, but so also did my Grandmother. Yes, my 84 year-old Grandmother decided to join Facebook. Although slightly belated, her entrance into this massive online social community represents the incredible interest that has been garnered recently surrounding Facebook. The truth is, though, there are alot of people out there who are just like my Grandmother: who have recently joined Facebook, although, they may be absolutely clueless with regard to the use of Facebook as an incredible marketing and promotional resource and tool.

Further down on this lens, I have included this pie graph which shows just how few people are essentially capitalizing off of Facebook, with regards to the near-endless potential for self-promotion of their own website(s) and venture(s). Quite honestly, I was absolutely shocked to see just how few people have begun using Facebook in this manner: so much so that I was inspired to concentrate considerable time and effort into developing this Squidoo Lens.

Don't forget to change your Facebook Status Update!

A consolidated, bulleted, list........

.....of just about everything that you'll get out of this Squidoo Lens!

Millions of dollars have been funneled into driving Facebook's business plan, from original ideas and conception, to where it is today: a forefront leader in the world of Social Networking. To throw out an endless supply of graphs, numbers, and statistics, would definitely serve to validate the global notion of Facebook's inherent potential. Without going to deeply, for our purposes, just know that, according to Facebook's official blog, Facebook currently gains roughly 700,000 new, Global, members per week. (Yes, that's right.....I said "700,000").......

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see the potential here. Unfortunately, whether you have aspirations to be the next Bill Gates, or simply make an extra $50-$100/month, very few people actually know where to start. Facebook is a good......I mean, GREAT....place to start, and I will tell you why, based on my own personal experiences.

Because I have encountered much of my success through the use of Facebook Group's Platform, I will be teaching you a variety of unique, and creative, ways that I have used my own Facebook group to benefit myself, and others.

  • Build, develop, and nurture a Facebook Group that becomes massively Viral.
  • Exploit that viral-ness.
  • Successfully turn your Facebook Group into a brand by either creating your own LOGO or by doing what I did: engaging one of many high-quality LOGO design companies/teams to do it for you. Even still, fortunately, there are a variety of avenues that you can go to have a logo made, for your Facebook group. There are highly-skilled communities that will do it for you, as well. *this is a critical step!
  • Increase quality traffic to your Squidoo Lens, or other websites, through the use of Facebook Groups' and Pages' Platforms.
  • Once you have developed a sizable Facebook group, people/companies will actively seek YOU out and offer you money, in return for advertisement. (I'll explain more, about this, later in this lens!)
  • Utilize creative ways to integrate your own affiliate links into your massive, viral, Facebook Group.
  • Hold weekly/monthly contests, with products that other companies will supply, in return for advertising. (I'll explain more about this later, as well!)
  • Once you create your Facebook Group, ensure that you take running statistics of the membership growth! *This is an absolutely critical step!

So.....you have a Facebook account.....

Conveniently, this book cover is the perfect segue into the remaining content of this Squidoo lens. After creating a Facebook account, many are simply left scratching their heads. Exploration leads to gradually expanding your friend base. What should you do next? There is a near endless array of possibilities of which you could spend your time on Facebook, however, my Squidoo lens will beautifully complement this author's writing, in that, I will show you the techniques and strategies that I have applied in order to gain traffic, promote myself, and make money on Facebook.

a Universal Appeal

Succumb to the Trend......or is it a Trend?

175,000,000+ members later, and it's almost becoming 'uncool' to NOT be on Facebook. And, if you keep reading further down this Squidoo Lens, I'll continue to teach you how to utilize it to actually make money, and, of course, help others every step of the way.

I, personally, DON'T love Facebook because "all my friends are doing it".....instead, I love it because it offers the perfect opportunity to advertise and promote myself, my passions, and my projects. Unfortunately, most Facebook users, who desire to do this, WILL be shut out, and ignored, immediately.

For this reason, one has to be creative, and convincing, with their approach. Instead of actively seeking people to view, say, your Squidoo Lens, or your website, Facebook's Groups' platform, if done right, can instead virally attract people to YOU and to your cause.

I use my 240,000+ member Facebook Group to:

  • Gain incredible exposure to my Squidoo lens(es), by including a direct, clickable, link to them in my Facebook Group description, as well as, the links' section that Facebook has generously provided
  • Present the links to U.S. Military-related non-profit organizations that I like. This does GOOD by gaining exposure to worthy causes.
  • Exert an influence over many people. By virtue of being the creator and administrator of my Facebook Group, users take any recommendations that I present into consideration
  • Give away free-things. With such a large, growing, Facebook Group, it is easy to arrange for companies to provide FREE products, to give away to my loyal members, in return for a simple link placement advertisement to their website. As Iv'e found out recently, some companies will pay ALOT of money just to have a direct-clickable website link present, in your related Facebook Group, for all the world to see
Based on Facebook's Official Blog numbers, I have broken these statistics down further into Daily and Hourly membership user growth of the Facebook Platform.

This Picture is an Outdated Underestimate....

....and, I'll explain why.....

While both pieces of this pie chart have grown, the truth is, Facebook's '70 million active users' has almost tripled in size, since the date of this graph. This pie chart provides a great visual representation of the few who are actually exploiting Facebook's potential to the fullest. Even though I can't say exactly how many users are currently making money on Facebook, it serves to reason that the smallest slice on this pie chart has either remained stagnant, or decreased, in relation to the whole pie, with consideration given to such a large increase in active Facebook users.

While you continue to read the rest of this Squidoo lens, please keep this simple pie graph in mind.

Whether you have been a member of Facebook for a while, or are just beginning to explore uncharted territory, I highly-recommend this book. The Facebook Platform is a near-endless expanse of potential, and, in my own personal opinion, it's absolutely foolish to NOT take advantage of it, at least from a marketing and promotion standpoint. Their substantial, daily, membership growth provides a perfect opportunity to promote yourself, your website, and, of course, any Squidoo Lens(es) that you may have built, and want the world to see.

What you have produced is important. Why wouldn't you want the world to see it, anyway?

Defining your Goal

....is the second step to Facebook success!

Exploiting the inherent viral nature of Facebook's Groups' Platform can, undoubtedly, make you alot of money, while generating incredible traffic, exposure and interest to your Squidoo Lens(es) and/or personal website(s). Like a sculptor molds his sculpture, any Facebook group you create must be treated with utmost care. Facebook has generously offered this functionality, but, you must still do everything you possibly can to make it your own. We aren't talking about creating a group, only to never visit it again.

If you want Facebook users (yes, all 175,000,000+ of them) to become excited about your Facebook Group, you have to give them a reason to be excited about it, starting with defining your goal

Amidst a whole array of Facebook Groups that currently exist , very few of their founders do things the RIGHT way. Perhaps, they have created their Facebook group without any understanding whatsoever of the potential of Facebook groups, from a marketing and promotional standpoint. There could be a variety of reasons for why they haven't taken full advantage of them, but, in the context of this Squidoo lens, I'll show you how not to make some of the mistakes they have, or, sadly, under-appreciate the value of their own, massive, Facebook Groups.

The truth is, many professions revolve around the basic concept of 'Goal-setting'; without goals, those professionals couldn't construct a building on time, smash a home run record, or, provide optimal care to their patients. Within the context of Facebook, however, the goal you set for your group will, from the very beginning, determine whether or not it succeeds or fails.

"It's not so much the achievement of your goal, but, the pursuit of your goal, that means the most."

Speaking of Controversy.....

....as Promised.

In the arena of Facebook Groups' Platform, 'goals' are typically translated into some massive numerical value in order to measure the success, or failure, of that particular group. Thousands of groups have been created that shoot for great things. Whether it's to have the largest group, EVER, on Facebook, or to build the next million-member group, Facebook users are attracted to these goals. It's inherent to our human psyche.

Humans are driven. We are passionate. We set goals, and we strive hard to achieve them. When setting the goal for your Facebook group, you MUST remember this. Not only should you determine your passion, but, I would highly-recommend setting forth a massive goal. Controversy does ensue, however, if the group goal you establish is "too" high or too unrealistic. A delicate balance is immediately warranted. If you set too high of a goal, Facebook users will deem it unreasonable and unrealistic, and will refuse to join and, worst-of-all they won't invite their friends. If you set your Facebook Group Goal too low, they will see the group as meaningless and not worthy of their attention. This is precisely why your Group LOGO will be so important, and, could actually determine your success or failure.

Should you succeed at making your Facebook Group go viral, the possibilities for self-promotion are endless. You can hook up your Facebook Group with direct-clickable links to your Squidoo lens(es) and/or your own personal website, and, users will exert their loyalty to your Facebook Group by 'exploring' the links you recommend.

In general, your Facebook Group goal should be:
  • Measurable (a numeric value, preferrably)
  • Realistic
  • Obtainable
  • Sustainable

Bridge the Gap between your Facebook Profile and Reality....

.....one profile card at a time!

In my many years of being a dedicated Facebook user, I recently ran across these awesome profile cards. At first, I just brushed them off, however, I began to see the great practical application of having these profile cards ready, on hand.

NOTE: You can do this with your LinkedIn, and MySpace, accounts, as well!
*Importing your profile is easy.

The reason I like these cards is because:

  • As a college student, there isn't a single person (that I know) on campus, that doesn't have a Facebook account.
  • Facebook has become somewhat of an extension of my personality, and an awesome, complementary, means by which to keep in touch with my friends.
  • If you click on one of the 'cards', you can see just how the creator goes about assembling information, and portraying it on the card. As you insert information (as little, or as much, as you'd like), that information is injected, in real-time on your card!
  • If you don't want to manually insert your own information, you can actually import all your profile information, with only 1 or 2 clicks of your mouse!
  • At first, $16.95 may seem like an excessive price for one card, however, that is for 100 cards! (I had to look more closely to see that.)
  • Not interested? You may have second thoughts once you scroll down to where I'll teach you how you can exert an influence over Facebook's 175,000,000+ Global users by mastering Facebook and exploiting its viral nature to the fullest.

It all began with a simple LOGO......

......a Passion, a Goal, an Idea, and a Dream!

Rome wasn't built in a day. Neither will your Facebook group be. However, don't be discouraged, young grasshopper, before we hastily jump in to even creating our group, there are some basic things that you will want to consider. Laying a firm, appealing, and unshakable, foundation for your Facebook Group is Paramount, especially......especially......if you want it to have a long, and beneficial, lifespan.

The 'appeal' that you give your Facebook group, in this initial stage, will be directly related to Facebook users interest in it, to the point where they will willfully send out friend invitations, as well as, of course, clicking the links that you place in your "Group Description" and "Links' Section".

As you can see in the picture, my Facebook Group's LOGO is simple, unique, and conveys a unifying message, which has been effective enough to consistently gain 500-1,000 new members, everyday, for the last year. This is evidenced by the group growth statistics that I have taken since the group's conception.

The LOGO that I ultimately decided to use for my group was actually a slight variation of a LOGO that the Logo Company designed, for me, for a whole different project entirely. After changing the coloring to simple black & white, while integrating the group name, this became the LOGO/Brand that has stuck with my group for so long.

My other Facebook Squidoo Lenses

.....very valuable information, at your fingertips!

Because such a wealth of information is available, with regards to how you can utilize Facebook's functionality to benefit yourself and others, I have branched THIS Squidoo Lens off into other, complementary Squidoo Lenses.

Funny Status Update #1

__________is proof reading to make sure he hasn't any words out.

This is an Example:

...of how Groups I join show up automatically in my News' Feed!

Next to the picture of that stunning and handsome gentleman (Me...lol), you can see just how all the Facebook Groups I have joined automatically display as direct, clickable, links, in my Facebook News' Feed. This is extremely important to note, because, these links are automatically visible to every single one of my 150 Facebook friends. If only one of my friends joined my group, it would then become visible on their news' feed, and to all of their friends, as well.

I have also, intentionally, joined many of the more-well-known groups on Facebook, in order to give you an idea of what group names are attracting, appealing, and have been successful.

Because, I'm only one person.....

....and can only write so much.

While this Squidoo lens has a WEALTH of information, one thing that I hope it does inspire is further interest in the use of Facebook's platform as an awesome marketing and promotional tool. As you continue to read further on this lens, I'm confident that, even if you have only had limited exposure to Facebook, to this point, that you will begin to see just how YOU can utilize such an awesome gathering of millions upon millions of people to benefit yourself, and others. The potential here is near endless, considering, not only the daily growth of Facebook's platform, but, also, the incredible amount of users that are dedicated and loyal to their website.

According to Facebook's official BLOG:
  • Current Global Facebook Membership: 175,000,000+ users
  • Weekly Membership Growth: 700,000+ new users

That means that:
  • Daily Membership Growth: 100,000+ new users
  • Hourly Membership Growth: 4,166+ new users

Funny Status Update #2

__________is havingtrou blewithhis spacebar.

Naming your Facebook Group

Ideally, it would stand to reason that this step *SHOULD* go hand-in-hand with the design, and development, of your Group's LOGO. Afterall, it makes the most sense that you would want your actual group name to be included in your LOGO. Prior to engaging any logo design company, it's best if you know exactly what you want to call your group.

What seems like it should be such a simple step can easily become diluted with a plethora of considerations. This is precisely where several schools of thought emerge, that Iv'e noticed, related to the actual naming of one's Facebook Group. This step ultimately goes hand in hand with the goal that you have defined, because, I would HIGHLY advise including that specific numerical 'goal' in your Facebook Group name.

Here is where understanding the broader scale of Facebook Group functionality is crucial. It's not 'just' a group, instead, Facebook's functionality has also been designed so that every new member, who joins your Facebook Group, will automatically have that action detailed in their NEWS' FEED, which will, at the moment of their joining your group, will be proclaimed to the rest of their friends. This is a good thing.......a VERY good thing......for YOU, Because your group name will be displayed in their news feed, it is important that you pick a name, and goal, that excites and resonates with people. Based on my own experience, Iv'e seen people go about this in an entirely wrong way.

Funny Status Update #3

__________ is writing a dissertation on moist pigeons.

Navigating limited Functioning

....and, making the most of what you DO have.

Just like how Squidoo has generously offered an array of 'modules' for lensmasters to manipulate, and further express themselves with, so also does Facebook offer quite an array of functionality that must be understood in order to utilize (and, exploit) them to their fullest.

For example, since we have been discussing the best way to approach building a group, Facebook actually doesn't allow mass emailing to your group members, after you have achieved over 5,000 members. On one hand, this is disheartening to some, especially those who love the immediate capability of having a mass email list, courtesy of Facebook, at their ready disposal.

Facebook intentionally limits this functionality for several reasons:

  • To limit the use of their Groups' Platform, especially by those who would use it to market, and promote products.
  • To hinder large groups from utilizing this platform to organize even further, in perhaps a political or protest manner.
  • To ensure that any ONE person (YOU: the founder of the Group) doesn't have excessive 'reach', and further persuasion. It is very possible for Facebook Groups' Platform to give any one person a significant amount of 'power', so it always pays to be humble, and 'quiet' about your techniques, especially when you begin receiving hundreds of new visitors to your website(s) everyday.
Despite these limitations that Facebook has intentionally placed, there a quite an array of creative techniques that you can use to circumvent this functionality. This essentially requires one's ability to think 'outside-of-the-box', by utilizing other Facebook functionality to 'complement' your Facebook Group. Once you reach a viral-status with your membership growth, you can utilize your Facebook Group to direct traffic to a 'complementary' Facebook Page.

I have explained the difference between Facebook Pages and Facebook Groups HERE: (I will have this link re-direct to another Squidoo Lens upon completion of THAT lens).

Need help navigating more than Facebook(?)

If you build it.....

.....they will come.

Once you successfully build your Facebook group, rest assured, it will require maintenance. Maintaining your group will only serve to benefit you because it will demonstrate to any of your new members, and current members, that your group is fresh and deserving of their becoming passionate about.

Unfortunately, Facebook's Groups' Platform is really quite limited in how you can actually convey 'freshness' in your group. This has been difficult to pull-off, at times, however, some creative thinking has led me to several approaches that are simple, and give my group a hint of 'new-ness', that consistently attracts roughly 500-1,000 new members evveryday.

Here is what I do:

  • I include the day's date (April XX, XXXX) as the very first thing new members encounter in the group description section. This is such a simple step, and only takes 10 seconds (at the most) to change every day. For a very long time, I presented my Facebook group without the date, and, suddenly, one day, a light bulb went off. I had to ensure that my Facebook group was always current and conveyed 'new-ness' to every new member, if I had expected them to become excited, and passionate about it.
  • As you continue to grow your Facebook group, you will naturally come across people who are passionate about it. Delegate. Delegate. Delegate. For my group, I have assigned trustworthy admins, and we all essentially take turns cleaning up SPAM and changing the group's date, with every new day. Whenever I have to go away to train with the Army for any extended period of time, I can rest assured that they will upkeep the group: keeping it clean, updated, and current, while I'm gone.
  • Update your recent news section, with news that is pertinent to your group's general theme. This should also be news that your group members will enjoy reading. The more you 'give' to your members, by tailoring your group as a great community, meeting-ground, and resource, the more they will give back to you.
  • Ensure that SPAM is removed from your Group's wall as often as possible. It is typically best if you can assemble a very trustworthy team of admins that can police your group throughout the day, with very little absence. This may require working around each other's 'real world' schedules. Facebook is a huge part of many people's lives, however, it isn't the only thing they do in life.
  • Remember, the more viral your group becomes, typically, the more SPAM you will encounter. They are directly related because users naturally want to peddle their products in groups that have consistent daily growth. Learn to manage it, and use your viral growth to your benefit, because the SPAM will simply never go away.
  • If you can take the initial steps to executing the growth and development of your Facebook Group, you should be prepared for immediate popularity. As each new person joins your group, they will naturally gravitate to the list of Admins and moderators, to see the quality of people that are running the group. For this reason, it's important that you also have a Facebook Profile Picture that you reflects who you are in the best possible light. (I wouldn't advise having a fake image or picture that isn't YOU, as your profile picture)

Applications can be used in conjunction with this/these methods....that is reserved for another article, entirely....

I jumpstarted my application with over 500 installs in 2 or 3 days, just by utilizing my Facebook group....

With the way Facebook is absolutely saturated with application, it is VERY VERY difficult to get anyone to install an application, unless you have a firm/established external website that you can direct application installs from........the next best thing, in my honest opinion, is to use Facebook's functionality in a very creative way to do this....

If you made a Facebook group about cars, and created an application around cars, chances are likely that, if you can achieve a viral status, you can gain quite a few views...and installs...to your application...which of course, would equate to more monetization potential....

so...please, have a little more respect when you post here....I'm not a moron and have been down that road already....
