My All Time Favorite Christian Books

Really Good Reading

Here is a listing of my all time favorite (and cherrished) Christian books, from ten to one! I hope you enjoy looking over my list. Be sure check out my favorites--they may become yours, too!

10. Books by Shelia Cragg

I couldn't pick just one book by Shelia Cragg! That's because each one of these books has affected my life. I've had one of these books since 2000 and I'm still writing and journaling inside it. And that's what I love most about them... you're allowed to write inside! Each book has a short chapter on a particular theme. The rest of the chapter has a page a day for writing and reflecting on different passages of Scripture. Don't feel any pressure to run through these chapters in seven days. I have some chapters that have taken me three years to get to the end of... and I like it that way.

9. Pligrim's Progress

I was first introduced to this classic while reading Little Women when I was thirteen. What a way to learn about this story! When I read it as an adult, became a life-long favorite and thus it's on my Top Ten list. Once you read this allegory, you can't help but call it to mind for the rest of your own journey to the Celestial City. What a treasured book!

8. Don't Make Me Count to Three

I recently read this book on Christian discipline and I wish I would have read it long before now... more specifically, about five years ago! I would highly recommend this book to any new Christian parent. It's the best book I've seen that addresses how to get at the root of disobedience, how to get your kids to understand how what they did was wrong and how to make it all right again. Priceless! I'm so thankful for this book.

7. The Excellent Wife

This one book has influenced my life more than any other wifely book I've ever read. Important, life-changing statements like you can't just give an excuse (like "I have PMS") and then just act in any old way that you want to. Wow! All I ever heard before was that we need to let it all out. It's good advise to not unleash your wrath upon every person you meet. There's ton's more sage advice in this book and I highly recommend it for any wife, the earlier the better!

6. The Discipline of Grace

This book was incredibly refreshing to read. The biggest thing I ever took away from it: I'm not living on the treadmill of performance where God loves me one day when I'm good but He doesn't love me the next when I've sinned. There's no need to live that way! It's simply not true! That, and other jewels are included in this wonderful book.

5. A Path Through Suffering

Elisabeth Elliot is one of my all-time favorite authors. And I treasure this book. Each chapter begins with an illustration of some biblical truth based on what we see in nature and the life cycle of plants. Even if you aren't suffering through pain or loss (I wasn't when I read this book, and I want to stress that it's not a book on death and dying!), you'll find so much richness here to help you grow closer to God and you think about His mysterious ways. Such a wonderful book...

4. Morning and Evening

The first (and best) devotional book I ever purchased, this book will always be a perennial favorite with me! I can read these entries again and again and I will still pull fresh insights from their pages. Incredibly Christ-exalting and good for the soul.

3. Streams in the Desert

Another wonderful devotional, one that is always such a timely read for me (and thus I'll rank it above Morning and Evening) is Streams in the Desert, a compilation of writings, poems and hymns for everyday of the year. I think it's the format that makes me love this book so--it's always a little different. Highly recommended!

2. The Knowledge of the Holy

The reason that I love this book so much is that never before had I heard anyone explain how God's attributes intermingle (for example, His mercy is just, His love is merciful, His justice is loving, etc.). It's an incredibly rich little book and one I love to think over again and again.

1. Stepping Heavenward

If I had to pick one book to take with me on my journey for the rest of my life, I'd want to take this little book which always spurs me on to love and devotion to Christ. The story of a girl named Katy (who reminds me a bit of Anne of Green Gables), and her life as a daughter, then a wife, then a mother and how she seeks to honor God in all of her life. It's written as if it were a diary, so the story is more authentic to me. It's my favorite book to read time and time again, so that's why it's here at my number one spot!
