HP/Palm Pre - Escape from Windows Mobile

My HP/Palm Pre

Having used smartphones based on Windows Mobile for many years, and become more and more frustrated with the "compulsory" Outlook syncing, I recently decided to change to a Linux-based smartphone. With my Palm Pre I am free from Microsoft for the first time, as I can now sync "over the ether" any time I want with Google Mail and Calendar.

Palm has now been bought by HP, so I'm hoping that webOS, which is the version of Linux in the HP/Palm Pre, will have the support to be developed further. It is an excellent platform, and as it currently has far fewer apps than the iPhone and Android smartphones, I've starting work with the HP/Palm webOS SDK to develop some new apps myself (see links below).

#Beer List is a front-end to a web-based database of beer tasting notes categorized by Country, Beer Type and Brewer, which has been designed especially for the HP/Palm Pre, Pixi and Veer mobile phones. The scrolling lists allow the selection of an individual Country, Beer Type and/or Brewer. The "Look" button, which is automatically clicked when the app opens, selects the available beers based on your selection(s), passing just the relevant Countries, Beer Types and Brewers back, whereas the "Show" button will also display the selected beer details, including voting links, so you can add your own rating to the database. Searching in the beer name and brewer text, when the selected details are displayed, starts a few seconds after you type, with the total number of beers found shown next to the filter field.

hollandnumerics says:

I've been using my Palm Pre since Christmas 2009 and I'm not really interested in collecting apps, as the apps I have now are mostly related to integrating calendars and contact lists from Google and LinkedIn, and they help me with my day-to-day activities. I've also never had problems with phone reception!
