My Babywearing Life

Babywearing is a lifestyle...

I began babywearing when my first daughter was 4 months old. She needed to be carried a lot and it was hard on my arms, plus I could not get much else done. I would not put her down to cry, so I spent the first 4 months of her life carrying her most of the day. I heard about baby slings in a LaLeche publication and ordered their pattern. I sewed it with some plain white material I had around.
I put her in it and started walking briskly. She settled into it in mere minutes and I was thrilled to have a way to fulfill her need to get carried and my desire to get things done around the house.

Hand-made Pouch Sling

My first sling, I made myself. It was bare-bones, two pieces of fabric sewed together at the shoulder and pouch. I later saw an add for a sling with adjustable rings and padded edges. I immediately added padding to my sling.

Sewing patterns and pre-made

Here is a free similar pattern to the pouch sling I first sewed. Pouch Sling Free Pattern Pouch slings are safe, they are not the bag slings that were recalled for safety issues. I made mine when my daughter was 4 months and it was perfect. Sleek design with no excess fabric. If you need a more detailed pattern or want one pre-made, here are some available on Amazon.

A Store-bought Sling

Padded rails, ring sling

Next I purchased the NOJO sling. This was in 1993 and there was not much information about slings and this was the only sling sold in stores.
There are so many better options today for slings I was hesitant to suggest any here. If you really think you would like the padding, (and you probably won't) here is a selection of padded slings. The padding railings just makes it harder to adjust the sling in my humble experience. Purchase at your own risk! (of not liking it) If you have tried a padded ring sling and you did not get used to it or baby did not seem comfortable and secure, please, please, please try a different style of sling. I did use a padded NOJO sling for 2 years but I had to fiddle with it a lot to get it to fit right. They do work, but are hard to adjust perfectly.

Babywearing is good for baby's neurological development.

The gentle rocking motion the baby experiences while you walk about stimulates the development of the vestibular system. This helps with coordination and balance. The unborn baby is used the the motion of you rocking and is familiar to the newborn. The motion of rolling or swinging is not the same.

My Next Sling

An Unpadded Ring Sling

I saw Maya Wrap slings and thought I would try to make one. I loved it. I made it out of a loosely woven 100% cotton fabric from the dollar table at Walmart. This was in 1996 when Walmart sold fabric for $1 a yard. I used 2 yards of fabric and rings from the hardware store.
People started asking me where I got it. I sewed several in different prints. People started asking me to sew them some. I used to sew them for them if they bought the fabric. A lot of mom's liked denim, but it ended up being to stiff to give and mold around the baby. A loosely woven fabric ended up being my favorite sling fabric. For my personal slings I went by how the fabric felt instead of what it looked like.

Original Mayan Wrap Sling

I started seeing ads for slings in Mothering magazine. I really liked the look of the Mayan Wrap. It was just like my sling but no padding and no sewed tail on the end. The fabric just flowed. Original Maya Wrap sewing pattern
I tried to sew one out of a loose cotton weave fabric from the dollar table at Walmart. I loved how the fabric gave around my daughter's legs and molded to our bodies. It was so easy to adjust, I could not ever go back to the difficult padded slings. I never bought an actual Mayan Wrap new, but I did get one in a consignment shop. I loved it.

I brought a sling to the hospital for the rest of my children's births.

I used slings from the second day my other 2 babies were born. I took them out of the bassinet and walked the halls with them in the sling. I had Caesarian Sections with all my children, so I was not on my feet yet the day they were born. This is a great sling to hold newborns securely in an upright position which is good for their digestion. I would hold the baby straight up, between my breasts, with their head near my neck and chin, then I would pull the top rail securely against their head. The bottom rail would be under their little diapered bottom and they would be snug and secure and could easily breath. Please see the video on proper infant positioning below. They were not scrunched up it the bottom of the sling. My husband and my mother would carry them around like this too.

Have an experienced babywearing mom help you.

The first time you wear your baby have an experienced babywearing mom help you adjust the sling to fit right. A sling that is too loose or hanging down near your waist will end up KILLING your back. The baby has to be snug to you for proper support.
If you do not have anyone to help you find a youtube video of someone explaining babywearing for the type of sling you choose. As soon as the baby is in the sling, start to pace quickly in the house or take a brisk walk so the baby gets used to it.

Who did the babywearing?

I did most of the babywearing because I was the only one nursing and nursing while babywearing is discrete and easy.
My husband had his own sling I made of NFL fabric. He also wore the baby in my slings.
We went to Disney with my brother and his 4 year old son. My husband carried my 3 year old on his back in the sling, my brother carried his 4 year old on his back in a sling and I nursed and wore our baby in a sling. My 7 year old walked!
My mother wore my babies too. She really liked it.

If I was buying a sling now, this would be my choice.

I used a sling until my children were around 3 years old. When they were at the reaching stage, I would swing them around behind me when I had to do something I did not want them to touch. When they got to about 4 months old they really liked to ride forward facing. I would hold their back against me and lift their legs up, crossing them and slide them in bottom first. Then I would tighten the top rail up against their chest under their arms. They were snug and sturdy and ready to see the world. When they were toddlers I would use the hip carry with them. No matter how I was carrying them it was easy to gently loosen the top rail and tip them sideways to lay down and sleep with their head supported.
Putting a baby down while asleep was as easy as could be. I would loosen the sling while leaning over the crib, gently lay them down and remove the sling over my head. Then I would undo the sling and leave the baby asleep on the sling fabric.
All three of my kids fondly remember riding in their slings.

We had a snugliss and a metal framed pack made for a toddler. They were very handy for hiking. This is a very well put together lens. I'm going to show it to my fiance. I think this would be perfect for our 5 month old.

5 months is a great age to start babywearing!

We didn't have carriers when my children were babies but we did have Snuglis. Daddy was very proud to carry each of his children around in it. It is odd how we have to re-learn things that indigenous people have always known. Babies are healthier and happier when they are carried. Good for you to promote babywearing.

“My babies wanted to be held almost all the time until they were about 9 months old.”

Don't forget the Big Sister or Big Brother

My daughters loved to carry their baby dolls in their own child sized slings. We buy them toy strollers and toy car seats, why not a sling just like mommy uses.

Using Two Slings

For Twins, or a Baby and a Toddler

I have looked everywhere for the picture I have of me wearing my 1 year old and 3 year old in slings crisscrossing my body. They are both in the hip carry position. Joseph was 1 and about 20 lbs and Elizabeth was 3 and 28 lbs. (She has always been petite.) When I carried them that way it was much easier on my back than when I carried one in the sling and the older one wanted to be carried too. I would get a sore arm from carrying in my arms much quicker than I would get a sore back using a sling or two. Just put the first sling on like normal then put the second sling on the opposite side. Then you can slip each child in their own sling. You are supposed to be able to put twins in one sling with their feet touching, but I never had twins to try it.
