Adding a personal touch to any book: Bookplates

These 'Ex Libris', as bookplates are also called, are auto adhesive and can be easily applied to the first or second page of a book. Completed with the handwritten name of the owner they turn a mass market product into a unique specimen. If an owner of a big library adds the same motif to each of his or her books, the Ex Libris becomes something like a trademark for that particular library. If only added to select books they are a way to mark a book as outstanding. In any case, there is no doubt about the ownership of a book marked with an Ex Libris, and chances a probably very high that such a book will find its way back to its owner after being lent out to another book lover.

The book is divided in four main chapters titled 'Lolita', 'Gatsby', 'James' and 'Austen'. It is a memoir of the time span when Azar Nafisi, a university lecturer, was reading these books or authors with her female students in her home book club. The different chapters focus on the actual books or reading process to varying degrees. Azar Nafisi covers life before and after the islamic revolution, and especially the time frame of its actually taking place, and we learn a lot about this time when reading the book.

This is a short little gem of a book - another novella, in fact.

The Selected Works of T. S. Spivet is a fusion of a novel and sketchbook illustrations done by the very scientifically-minded 12-year old narrator of the novel. The illustrations are beautiful, and complemented by footnotes. This means that the novel is not a linear read, but makes the reader hop from place to place. I love it!
