In Which I Join a Local Competition to See if It'll Help Me Lose Weight...

About a year ago, I began a weight loss experiment which I chronicled on my blog (see url below). I lost a little bit of weight but not as much as I wanted. Why do I call it an experiment? Because I wanted to see if by going public it would help me lose weight. And I like the support. So now, the local gym has offered a Biggest Loser competition, based on the TV show. And I dared to join. Here I chronicle weekly progress, my secret weapons that I hope will beat out the other contestants, and resources that might help you. Oh and by the way...those beautiful legs on the scale, are definitely not mine. Yet.

What Happens After The Competiton?

Note: This is where I was 6 months ago

Next week, the three month competition ends. It's been an incredible gift for me, motivating me to lose by competing with others.

But all good things come to an end. Or do they? I don't have the answers yet, but I'd like to continue monitoring my weight loss on this lens. I've found some incredible tools that I think can help anyone. I'll continue to share these with any reader. Because my journey is not finished.

I started this journey 2 1/2 years ago. I didn't make much progress in the beginning. There was a death in the family which set me back, then my health deteriorated and I became borderline diabetic. Before the competition I had lost 15 pounds. During the competition I lost close to 30 pounds. With many more to go.

My challenge will be creating new challenges for myself to continue to take the pounds off. I hope to share them with you here.

Here We Go Again...

Hey, Even Oprah Fell Off The Wagon

I felt really foolish gaining back almost all of the weight I lost during the competition. But then Oprah confessed her own feelings and I felt a tiny bit better. Now, I want to find the lifestyle that will be sustainable for me every day, all year.

I know what to do...why don't I do it?

I'm off to answer Bob Greene's five questions including: Why am I overweight? (He wants a deep answer on this one).

Weekly Updates 7/11

Sigh. My weight is still not coming off. On the brighter side of things, I am exercising every day and eating better. But still eating too much of everything. And retaining water for some reason.

20 pounds: 5 from the Competition and 15 from before"

Ener-G, at 11pm on December 27, 2008 predicts:

What a roller coaster fall. I've been in a lot of anxiety preelection, then denial and inertia post election. I want to be able to eat right and exercise as a way of life, not as a competition.

Your Best Life Now

After all these years, Oprah says she can't believe she's still discussing this topic. "With all the other things that I know how to do and all the other things that I'm so great at and all the other accomplishments, I can't believe I'm still talking about weight," she says.

If Oprah can fall, I guess I don't feel so badly about gaining back most of my weight loss from the competition.

Do you fool yourself into thinking you don't look as bad as you think with your extra pounds? Those brave folks on The Biggest Loser, baring it all are you (and me). This season is the biggest ever with the heaviest contestant ever (450 pounds) and the heaviest woman (also over 300 pounds). Jillian and Bob look like toothpicks...muscular toothpicks, but toothpicks nevertheless. This video is from last season. As soon as the new season's weigh in is posted, I'll add it.

The Biggest Loser Formula

You might need a 3rd grader to help you with the math

The science for losing weight depends on some rather fancy formulas. To get the complete formulas, contact me (after signing up as a supporter through Clicking for Pounds, see below) and I will send them to you. Here's what it involves:

    1. Calculate your ideal heart rate. Needs to be at 80% for prolonged workout for metabolising fat.

    2. Calculate your Body Mass Index. Figure out what percentage of fat you are.

    3. Calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate. This is how many calories you burn in a normal day.

    4. With the above information, you can figure out how much exercise to do in a week and how many calories to cut for your weekly goal in weight loss. The trick is to not put the body into starvation mode when it will quit losing weight.

Featured Secret Weapon: Exercising to Boost Metabolism

Andrew Weil has a great newletter on health. In one of them he mentioned a study on boosting metabolism by exercising 30 minutes, then resting 20 minutes (I do yoga stretches) and then exercising 30 more minutes. It has really boosted my fitness this past week.

The Flat Belly Diet

I've lost 3 inches so far from my waist!

I looked at Weight Watchers and many other programs. In the end I decided to try the Flat Belly Diet promoted by Prevention Magazine. It touts cutting edge research in targeting belly fat, the fat that creates the greatest risk for diabetes and heart disease. They've got a great online program that gives you daily menus, shopping, tips and forums. And you can try it for three months for free!
