Tell us about your dream business.

Where do your passions intersect with other's needs?

From the lens Start My Own Business Ideas.

Your education, training, passions, hobbies, interests, or creative ideas are a great starting point. Since you will be spending time, money, and effort as you struggle toward business success - choose to do something you can do with enthusiasm. Focus on your top two or three passions; the joys of pursuit can help you through rough periods.

"It is no use saying 'We are doing our best.' You have to succeed in doing what is necessary." - Winston Churchill

Seldom will your business' future growth be determined by what you learned in the past - be prepared to adapt constantly as the rules of engagement change. Your personal liberty will arrive when you solve problems for folks that are willing and able to pay for your product.

Listen to what people say they want; try it, and adapt it.

Repeat.

The rewards of owning your own life are worth the investments you are about to make.

Tell us about your dream business;

the one you own, or the one you want to start.

For all of you who are still in the process of starting your own business. Please be careful If considering franchising please. Educate yourself properly and I'm confident that you will be able to determine if a franchise is right, and it is not the majority of time, and you will save yourself years of grief.

    Great lens, packed with content.

As an "entrepreneur" myself one of the best definitions I heard of what one is below:

“Entrepreneurs are people who are too naive to see the obstacles that are obvious to others”.

    Quality!

Wonderful lens - I enjoyed the story about Arturo immensely; while it's a common business and personal development axiom to "begin with the end in mind" I feel that many individuals are less than completely cognizant of what their ideal life will look and feel like. Once one can be present in the moment and fully envision his or her ideal future, one can build toward it with all necessary steps and cut away the insignificant minutiae, and remove anything that doesn't directly lead toward's one's ideal life. Thanks again for the wonderful lens.

I have recently launched a USDA Certified Organic skin care system. Picked up by a great distributor and Golgi is in the process of a complete redesign. The need for safe products that are also effective for a radiant complexion are great. I'm passionate about educating consumers what the ingredients in the labels mean and the potential for harm using them. The only guarantee that you are getting an "organic" product is the USDA seal. I'm so excited to be going in this direction! Your lens has also encouraged me. Thanks!

    2. Give the hungry fish the right bait!

Finding the hungry fish (right market) is the most important and crucial step? How to get ideas?

What's your favorite topic? Go to the library and browse the magazines.
Go to nice forums and read what people are talking about. There might a problem that is not solved yet.

I've had multiple jobs where the bosses just don't know how to treat people, and what they don't understand is you won't get the best work out of someone you don't show respect to. I have been a supervisor in a past position and loved my people. I would love to have a business where I was the boss and could show people that there are authority figures out there that are willing to teach, train, and give respect. I know thats pretty broad but if anyone has any ideas for me I'm listening......

Must share what I have printed out on my desk... in case I need inspiration

    Nothing in the world can
    take the place of persistence

Talent will not; nothing is more common
    than unsuccessful people with talent

    Genius will not; unrewarded genius
    is almost a proverb

    Education will not;
the world is full of educated derelicts.

    Persistence and determination
    alone are omnipotent

I would recommend the following advice for aspiring entrepreneurs:
    1) Start small. You don't have to have the best idea to get started. It is important to get started right away on a idea. The best ideas come from working and solving problems.
    2) Most people will try to discourage you from starting your own business, IGNORE them.

That is a wonderful lens, Mr. Wallace, and I thank you on behalf of many future visionaries for assembling and making accessible so much of your wisdom and so many resources. This provides great inspiration and a balanced perspective. Often indecisiveness is the entrepreneur's enemy--any decision that an entrepreneur can make is better than making none--and being proved wrong is far better than inaction for the sake of avoiding a mistake.

Most websites were 'Launch And Leave' with no futher tuning, or updating. SO! I created a company to help in the process. One on One visits, drop ins, suggestions. Think business coaching for the digital age. =)

I've been in business for some thirty odd years and I've done well enough to provide for my family as well as putting aside a little nest egg. I've found that having a business in the real world is a lot easier than starting one online. I've been online now for awhile and while I'm making money it's now where near enough.

Still, I'm not one to give up and so I've just started another niche, one I have high hopes for.

    Hi Allan,

    Wow, what an amazing lens!

I love the way you have broken down the whole mindset of what it takes to start a business and how to actually stay on top.

2 key principles you touched on that I really struck a cord with me were:

    Integrity pays
Think about your customer more than you think about your profit

I never cease to be amazed at how many "budding entrepreneurs" like you put it miss this.

And of course....be determined to the core, and never give up.

Great stuff Allan! Keep up the good work.

    Richard

Excellent point about integrity; it cannot be overemphasized. I also like how you mentioned that some people are not looking to start a business so much as they just want extra income.
As far my business idea, I suggest that seekers look into becoming a cash for gold buyer or gold party host/ess. My lenses explain the opportunity and so does my website at http://www.beagoldbuyer.com

People need to be dedicated and not give up!

There is no doubt you can change your life by opening your own business, but on the flip side be prepared to spend many hours per day ( more than 8 and less than 24 ) in getting it off the ground.
I try to cover some most of what being part of starting a business is about on the blog http://www.1mjl.com. I cover health, economics, and finance as well. But try to keep relevant information that entrepreneurs might appreciate. -Thanks, Michael Lebb

I started my second business about a year ago. I just can't get rid of passion. I even give up a nice secure job to try it again. My first business took off nicely and then crashed. It is hard and sometimes painful but I can't really live with the idea of not following up with my goal.

I like your lens. The way I think about starting a profitable internet business is that it is kind of like learning to play baseball for the first time. Someone can give you a ball, a bat, a glove and a rule book, but until you play a lot you will not be hitting any homeruns for quite a while. With that said, i like the joke about how do you get to Carnegie Hall?

Isn't it funny how others react when we start a small business, especially if it is an online business? Gentle derision from those who don't want to hurt our feelings, and outright hostility from those who think we are idiots for trying. Stepping out of the beaten path to own our own time isn't easy, but it is necessary in this economic climate.

Very inspirational lens that has confirmed my belief in the principles persistence and determination when deciding to go into business for ones self. "Education will not do it...the world is full of educated derelects...genius will not do it...unrewarded genius is almost a proverb...talent will not. Nothing is more common in the world than unsuccessful men with talent. Persistence and Determination alone are omnipotent..." Calvin Coolidge, 30th President of the United States.

Great comment and very true, i own my own business and though took and still takes work its so nice to own your own life and you get so more enjoyment in what you do.

    One comment I love and think is a great thought if you are worried about taking the plunge is;

Loved the way the article stresses on how much it is important for an entrepreneur to believe in his/her own idea. Entrepreneurs need to make sure that they are not taking their ventures as part-time pass-time. If they seriously want to flourish in their venture, they need to believe in their idea wholly-solely.

You can make a magazine for your neighborhood this week, and hand it out to your neighbors. You can also make a (free) Squidoo lens (and maybe earn a dime or two for yourself or charity) on your favorite topic - then keep coming back and making it better.

There will be no better time to start writing. I saw sign the other day that said something like, "creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes, art is figuring out which mistakes are worth keeping." All great achievers make lots of mistakes, you have a chance to start early and enjoy the learning.

Working for the government can be good experience for starting your own business. I know many well respected people who left government service and started their own business in a field similar to what they did in the government. The idea of being a business person has to be on your radar while working. They knew to get every free appropriate certificate and avail themselves of training and knowledge that was offered to further their goals. Unfortunately now maybe because of the economy, you will find a lot of cogs both in government and private industry.

  • BFuniv.com Mar 10, 2010 @ 2:40 am | delete
    Mary, I don't know.

Being a government employee is all about bureaucracy; following rules and taking orders. Running a business is all about finding out what is best for the customer, and discovering the way to best deliver it to their satisfaction.

The first question to ask yourself, "Am I prepared to use original thought to solve other's problems, problems they will choose me to solve because I'm exceptional, and will pay me for the solution. If not, see if you can become a supplier to another government agency.

It won't be a real business, but it is a step toward determining the best way to run your own life. The key is: don't ask - just start doing. With your own business you have to make the decisions or it isn't yours.

The sad part of the last two hundred years of education is that its purpose was to train us to be good followers. Retrain yourself, You are far more capable than your schools let you believe. Your hesitation is a trained response, not a human one. Become human, not just another government cog.

I had a business dream for many years. The main ingredients were lots of money and freedom to do what I wanted. Not surprisingly it didn't come to anything, but it did cause me a lot of frustration. Fortunately I have always read a lot. I found that I enjoyed teaching and encouraging others. By combining the NLP I had learned to help myself overcome some personal challenges with the idea of helping and encouraging others I managed to evolve myself as a coach. And, because I knew my way around the corporate world I became an executive coach.

But part of my story is also that I worked for many years in the advertising business (that was where I learned my way around the corporate world) so I was interested in communication and how you persuade people to change their behaviors.

My interests led me to build The Communication Cycle which is now an powerful feature of my Leadership Coaching business.

It was a kind of a roundabout journey, but I am very happy with where I have landed.

What about your other readers - what do their journeys look like?

Consumer confidence is now increasing within some parts of the economy and it is interesting that both the shares prices of 'Burberry' and 'Cadbury' are up, so if buying a new raincoat for the winter or eating a chocolate bar to encourage your thought of warmth as we near the ravages of winter begin to influence you then you are simply following an upward trend.
The increase in share prices offers good news to those who cannot bear another few weeks with their current colleagues/boss or travel to work destination. The Recession has also encouraged a number of stay at home entrepreneurs who have decided to avoid forever the necessary commuting rain wear or the desperate sugar rush required from chocolate to enable them to deal with the corporate blues or their stress at work. Forget Green shoots of recovery the money is with Chocolate and working at home!

A great lens, some practical tips, ideas and motivations. Most of all some good resources to help guide towards financial success, which is something that I'm sure we all could do with.

One of the keys things for me was to clearly set out my Goals to enable me to focus on what I wanted to achieve both in the short and long term.

A second key factor was the assistance of a mentor who was able to coach and guide me along the way, helping me avoid the numerous pitfalls and I now run a successful internet business.

I think that this is a very useful lens.

Jobs continue to disappear. Is it just as a result of current economic conditions? I dont think so.
They have been increasingly disappearing since the 1990s and I believe that this trend will continue until jobs, as we know them, will no longer exist.

Did you know that the US Dept of Labor predicts that current students will have 14 jobs by age 38?

People who want to achieve financial stability for themselves and their families and who want to live life on their own terms need to be thinking about going into business for themselves.

This lens will be useful to them.

Great lens and advice. Customer service, marketing and personal development are vitally important to a successful business. My first home-based business I created was successful and went on to sell for multiple six figures. However, I do remember the early days of slow beginnings, and the trials and errors. I just kept the end goal in mind, and listened to the " I can " voice rather than the " I can't " and it paid off. Thanks, a 5 Star favorite.

Great lens! I particularly like the Shakespeare quote at the beginning. I've always that our thoughts are what dictate our lives in the end.

I very much agree with one of those tips where is says "If you want to prosper let your costumers prosper"

that is true coz when your costumers are happy and satisfied with your products they will keep on comming back.

    5 starts for you.

Edison was right of course. Our greatest weakness indeed lies in giving up. Persisting with my article writing actually brought in many clickbank cheques, a thrill I relish. I notice you are also recommending Dr. Fran Harris's book "Reallionaire" Sounds like something I have to get. I was fortunate enough to catch her on "The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch. I'm a believer in conquering our most potent enemy first (our inner fears) Hoping to convey that at my wealthy affiliate training lens.

Just to add my own piece of advice, if you are at the very beginning stages of coming up with a business idea consider the importance of sales.
Many start a business thinking of how they will deliver their product or service, few consider how they will sell it.

Having your own business should be the goal for most people. Even if it's a hobby related business you can only do on the side.

Since I work with a barter company I'm always reminding businesses to get into bartering for the services they need. Barter is a business tool used by savvy business people to grow their business incrementally.

I love the story about Arturo. My short term aim is to start making a little bit of extra pocket money on the net while learning as much as I can about various internet businesses that are succeeding. I need time to figure out what would suit me best, and whether or not this sort of thing is really for me.

For the moment Squidoo is proving to be not only great fun, but a great resource for learning. This is a great lens, I'm adding it to my favourites :-)

I want to keep doing what I'm doing, just doing it wiser; i.e., working smarter not harder. Thanks for the encouragement!

Yes, thanx for pointing out that its impossible to be a success if somebody doesnt want to acknowledge the power of values and virtues (persistence, focus, intensity). This is really positive stuff! I hope you could drop by my positive thinking/affirmation lens!

Running my own business provides a sense of freedom and control that is so life affirming. Since I started my business last year it has been all consuming but also exciting as things settle and I get over the "getting started" phase. Persistence and research is so key to making a success of an entrepreneurial venture.

Great lens! My suggestion is to keep on pursuing - never stop. View each "failure" as a learning step on the road to success.

Excellent lens! I've found my dream business, or rather it found me and I love it.
