Just from personal experience
I'm 47 years old and have had a dog of my own almost every minute of that time. I have never had one that was horrible. I think the main key to this is just loving them. You have to be firm and have rules but you have to show them love and care too. Pretty much, if you ask me, you treat them just like you do a kid. Animals have always been a part of my family and that is how we have treated them. Shoot after my brother and I left home my mom treated the dog better than us, lol. Talk about a spoiled little mini poodle. She doesn't let him bark like crazy or bite but she gives him treats and cuddles and just plain shows him love and in return he is a wonderful little dog.
