My Dream Vacation - Rent an Island

Ranked #12,826 in Travel & Places, #311,788 overall | Donates to Squidoo Charity Fund

This is what I really want to do, rent a private island and spend a month long vacation with my family.

Why rent a private island? Can you even do that? Well, yes, and because if you're like me you appreciate peace, tranquility, privacy and tropical beauty.

Living on an island would be the ultimate vacation if you enjoy boating, swimming, sunbathing, and gorgeous, romantic sunsets. Do you fish or snorkel or even skinny-dip? Then think about your own private island.

Its something I haven't had the opportunity to do yet, but I am planning on doing this one day soon! It is one of my dream vacations yet to come.

Seabird Key, Marathon - Florida Keys

This is an ideal destination.

Seabird Key is part of the Florida Keys, so while it is an exotic island vacation, it is absolutely doable even for people who prefer to vacation in the States. The only drawback to this property is the non-existence of air conditioning. This place is totally eco-friendly and is completely solar powered! So if you're looking to rent this gorgeous island, I'd say winter time is best.

About vacationing on an island.

It takes just a bit more planning than a regular vacation.

We've stayed for a long weekend on Captiva Island, which is almost my dream vacation, but there actually are a few hundred people that live there so it isn't exactly private but we did have to provision carefully because the little store out there is really expensive. I didn't want to spend $7 for a gallon of milk.

If you truly are on a private island, though, you do have to plan out meals because you just can't run down to the corner store for a midnight snack. Its a good idea to have plenty of snacks on hand and lots to drink. Fresh fruit and veges are refreshing and keep your energy going. During the day when family members are coming and going from the beach or pool or boat this works best to have light snacks and lunch.

Usually the mainland isn't far away and you can plan for boat rides to local restaurants for elegant dinners right by the water. There is nothing better than a day of fun and sun and then a great seafood dinner to top off the day.

Sunsets in the Keys are beautiful!

Someone get me a margarita.

Palm trees, sand, salty air, ocean breezes and gentle waves. Add a fiery sunset and life is just perfect. The ultimate in serious relaxation!

Little Palm Island

It isn't totally private, but it is gorgeous and exclusive.

This is an adult vacation destination, not little-kid-friendly. If you want total relaxation and a private outdoor shower then this is the place. One of the very best places I could imagine to be for a second honeymoon, for sure. Oversize hammocks and crushed shell paths and total serenity.

All I can say is look at the pictures. Then come back to reality.

Island vacation gear for your tropical getaway

There are a few items that will make vacationing easier...

Definitely need an inexpensive tote bag for stuff in general. Very handy. Also a pocket sized camera because that big SLR you've got will just get in the way and you don't want it to get all sandy. And you might not even think of it, but a travel journal is a really great idea for jotting down all your adventures and thoughts each day of your trip, as well as holding little keepsakes. I promise you, keep a travel journal and when you get home and flip through it, you'll be extremely happy you did.

Start planning now.

Even if an island getaway isn't in your near future, its never too early to start planning! Having a dream vacation is a good thing. When you finally do get to go, all your diligent planning will pay off.

What is it like in the Keys today?
