My favorite photos

Ever since my dad gave me my first old fashioned camera in the late 1970's, I've been clicking away! It's been about 30 years now (man, how time has flown!), and I've taken many, many photos! I've had a number of film cameras of various makes through the years. Eventually I graduated to a good digital camera in February 2007 - a Pentax *ist DL (6.1 Megapixel). Before that I sometimes borrowed a small digital camera from a friend.

With my digital camera I've probably taken more photos in the last year and a half than in the precious 30 years! It's really great to be able to take shots, see the result immediately and not have to print and spend cash unnecessarily! And how nice to be able to edit photos to your heart's content. The photo editing program I use, is GIMP. It's very powerful, free and Open Source, so I love it!

My intention with this lens is to share the shots I like the most with you (not an easy task to choose!). I hope you enjoy them. Please let me know what you think by adding your comments!

Here's an interesting photo of two Boeing 737's, belonging to South African Airways. They were flying in formation, and the one broke away. It looks like they're almost touching! I took this photo at the Africa Aerospace and Defence Airshow held on Saturday 20 September 2008, in Cape Town.

This spider made a web between plants near my front door. I just had to take a photo of him, so here's the result!

This photo of the nearly full moon was taken from Cape Town, in the Southern Hemisphere. I took a number of photos as the moon went through its various phases. If I remember correctly, I used a 400mm lens on a tripod, (data of the older manual lens is not recorded with the image).

I enjoy taking photos of old church buildings in South Africa. The architecture of these buildings really fascinate me. This one was taken of a Dutch Reformed Church Building in the town of Heildelberg, Western Province, South Africa. According to the notice board in front of the church, the congregation was started in 1855. The date on which the church building was completed is not given there.

These beautiful mountains are near to a town called Villiersdorp, in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. It's about an hour's drive from Cape Town (and what a beautiful drive!). I was able to visit there in July, during the winter, after some snow had fallen on the mountains.

This photograph was taken at Yzerfontein, a little town on the West Coast of South Africa, about an hour's drive from Cape Town. I took my dad to a few lovely spots in the area when he visited the Cape in October 2007. A whole lot of seagulls were flying around my car in the carpark at the beach, and I was able to get this shot.

On Saturday 20 September 2008 I attended an airshow called Africa Aerospace and Defence 2008. It was held at the Air Force Base Ysterplaat, Cape Town, South Africa. A great opportunity to take many photos of all kinds of aircraft, ranging from jets to helicopters! Here's a photo of a small single engine propeller plane that can do all kinds of aerial stunts. In the background you can see the Hottentots Holland Mountains, not too far from Cape Town. (In case you wondered, I've blurred registration numbers on the plane).
