Mystery books are among my favorite things ...

When Millie McBride's mom loaned this neighbor boy a copy of a Sugar Creek Gang mystery she set me on the lifelong reader path. She loaned me one book after another in the series until I had devoured all she had. So that series was my first favorite. Along the way there have been so many new favorites like Ellery Queen, then Fredric Brown, and on to the pulps. As years rolled on I discovered some thankfully prolific authors like John D. MacDonald, and Lawrence Block, and. . . the list of favorites grew over time.

One of the joys of being a reader is the discovery of a new author. This lens is about some mystery authors I've discovered along the way that you may not have read. To get you started I'm recommending a book or two. I hope you'll make a discovery here.

You don't really need a special occasion to make the gift of reading. I'm so thankful to Millie's mom! So many books, so little time. . .

Discover Donna Leon

and enjoy Venice . . .

I'm really glad that Donna Leon discovered and settled in Venice, the city surrounded by water. Otherwise Commissario Guido Brunetti of the Venice Polizia might have become Lieutenant George Brown of the Newark Police. That might have worked out, since Leon was born in New Jersey. But as an American expatriate in Venice for over 20 years, Donna Leon has absorbed the Venetian culture and sensibility and translated them beautifully into English.

It's a joy to look over Brunetti's shoulder as he works and lives in his beloved city.

It's tough to pick a favorite, but this one is a great look into Brunetti's world. A Silver Dagger Award Winner!

Discover Jon A Jackson

who writes Detroit noir. . .

Jon Jackson's detective series is known as the Detective Sergeant Fang Mulheisen series. I see at as three interwoven series: some feature Mulheisen, some feature Detective Grootka, and some feature hitman Joe Service. No matter, it's a great series; a series that is best devoured from the beginning.

A Jon A Jackson recommendation

My favorite book in the series is the "Blind Pig". If you know what a blind pig is, you know this story takes place in the small hours of the morning. If you don't know the meaning, I'm not going to tell you - read the book. In fact, if you are only going to get to read one Jon Jackson book in your life, then let it be the "Blind Pig"!

Discover Harold Adams

and go back in time. . .

I love authors who create a sense of time and place in their stories. Harold Adams places the town of Cordon in South Dakota, paints it the dreary beige of the dust bowl during the great depression, fills it with people who endure as much as they live, and then lets Carl Wilcox drift in after being released from prison. Carl gets a room in his parent's boarding house and does odd jobs to help out. He's casual, but cares about people. He's aimless but not irresponsible. He stumbles as casually into a murder, as to a widow's arms. His knack for resolving the murder puzzles in the first few books eventually earns him some respect in surrounding towns as a man who can figure out murders - a murder man.

Discover Laurence Shames

and have a grin, a chuckle, a laugh. . .

This Shames series is really a bunch of books with overlapping characters and setting, and not a lot of important continuity. Read them in any order. My favorite character is Bert the Shirt, a retired New York mobster, who is known for his stylish shirts. Bert is a source of wisdom for the protagonist, and humor for the reader. Bert is never seen with out his dead wife's Chihuahua, Don Giovanni. Ok, if you want this to make sense, you've just got to read the book!

Shames is currently best known as the pseudonymous author of "Bad Twin". "Bad Twin" is a novel based on the TV series "Lost".

Discover John Dunning

How many books can a bookman book?

For me John Dunning is a trifecta interest hit - mystery author, old time radio authority, and to make it really sweet he writes mysteries about book collecting and old time radio!
