My Least Favorite Laws of Life

Ranked #2,172 in Nonprofits, #440,042 overall

I fought the law and...

Sometimes, the rules of life aren't quite the way that I want them to be. Oh, sure... I love it when the nice guy finishes first, and the bad guy gets it in the end, but sometimes, the way that the world works just isn't fair.

For a philanthropic cause, I thought I'd post about the laws in life that I just hate to admit are really laws.

  1. The List

The List

  1. To be human is to suffer.

Yup, this one's at the top of the list. Buddha figured this one out (and that the way to enlightenment is beyond suffering). And it's just no damn fun.
  2. Life is a terminal disease.

This is probably the most ignored law of life - we do our best to pretend that this one isn't true at just about every minute (especially before we're 21). But, unfortunately, it's true.
  3. Evil Exists

We've all pretty much come to accept this one in the past few years, but it's never been one of my favorites. I like to believe that everyone is good and wonderful, and it's just not true.
  4. Good things happen to bad people

This one follows on the first one - sometimes, the bad guys win in real life. In fact, the bad guys end up winning often.
  5. No matter how brilliant/successful/wonderful you are, somebody will dislike you

This one's a corollary to the previous two - even if you're the nicest person on the planet, you're always going to annoy someone. It drives me nuts, since I'm one of those people who wants everyone to like him.
  6. We don't know very much at all

Think about how you look back on those people from 400 years ago who hadn't even figured out how to write, thought that the world was flat, and hadn't figured out the amazing power of the combustion engines. Oh, yeah... we call that "The Dark Ages".

Then, think about what they're going to call you in 400 years. We think we're pretty advanced, but our knowledge is pretty partial.
  7. Nothing Free/Easy comes without Hard Work

We all want to "get rich quick", lose weight without going to the gym while eating whatever we want, and move to the top of the corporate ladder without working 80-hour weeks. But nothing worth happening has ever happened without a large amount of work.
