My First Quilt

Why am I building this lens? I was going to build this lens once my first quilt was completely done. It seems I keep letting other things take me over and the quilt is just not getting done. I am building this lens in hopes to inspire myself to complete it! I thought it would be neat to have updates as I work along on it as well.

My boyfriend bought me a sewing machine in late November. Into December he bought me a rotary cutter, knowing that I wanted to make quilts. Later he also bought me the quilt mat as well. I got busy and spent days cutting out all the material that I had into squares...then I just stopped all together.

I got 2 ziploc bags of material from a gal at work that didn't sell at her yard sale. I picked up a bag of scrap material (which ended up mostly being clothing) from a gal on the freecycle list. I also had some material left from making pillows for my grandkids for Christmas.

The only quilting experience I have is some I've read on the internet and what I've learned in sewing club at church. At church I was the one that cut the squares for the other ladies as well as ironed some once they were sewn. I watched one lady pin a quilt for sewing. That's it! One of the lady's has told me she will help me with mine. All I need to do is call her when I need help and come over to her house.

Wish me luck, and I hope you enjoy my journey as I make my first quilt.

Please note, this photo is the start of my quilt!

Update 7/15/09

I didn't get this lens updated after our sewing club meeting at church in June.

You will notice that I changed the intro photo. It's now my actual quilt squares.

I thought I had enough of just 2 sizes to do a whole quilt but I was far from wrong. I had to rethink on the design.

In the photo before you can see how much I have sewn together so far. You also see my piles of squares to sew.

My goal is to have all of the top done by our sewing club meeting in August so that the ladies can teach me how to tie it off.

Update 7/26/09

Well, I've been working hard to try to get all the squares sewn for my quilt top.
In the photo below you will see where I've laid out my pattern.

Now....I blew my pattern :(
I was pinning while we watched a movie. I realized I had pinned one strip upside down from the way I needed it. I turned that part over...however, I forgot to change the rest.

My pattern is all messed up...but I will be danged if I am ripping it out!! I've worked on this so long. My 12 yr old has requested that this, my first quilt be her Christmas gift. She will love and cherish it no matter what and that is all that matters.

(which failed)

Update 8/4/09

I'm just a little late posting the update.
Last week I finally finished getting all the squared sewn together. I am still upset over messing up my intended pattern, but it's my first quilt.

I got it laid out on the blanket that I am using for the backing. (See photo below)
I pinned the top to the blanket. I started to try to figure out how to pin the sides but stopped.

We will have sewing club at church this next Tuesday. I told the ladies at church this past Sunday that I will be bringing it for their expertise to teach me how to finish it.

The next update will be once it's complete!

Not Quite Done Yet

I went to sewing club August 11, but still didn't get my quilt complete.
The ladies had me repin some of it.
I got it tied. (see photo below of me tieing...Jasmine took the photo and must have been moving when she took it)
I got the edging pinned up.

All I have left if to actually sew the edges. This has been a terrible week for being busy. I do hope to get my machine out and get it finally completed.

I really had no idea just how much time was involved in making a quilt, even if you are using a sewing machine.

It's Done!!!

I got out the sewing machine this morning and actually finished the quilt!

It's not perfect, but I think since I am still learning and this is my first one, it came out pretty good.

The photo of the completed quilt is below.

I've decided to start a new lenses called Blankets for Gifts. I will be getting it started soon. I don't think that I can make my goal of getting everyone a blanket or quilt made by Christmas, but I sure can give it a good try.
My boyfriend wants my next quilte to be for his sister for Christmas, but in the meantime I am really close to having the crocheted quilt blanket done that I've been working on.

I hope you've enjoyed my first quilt journey and I will see you around.

It's Done!!

I enjoyed your journey with your first quilt. It is lovely and I never would have guessed you messed up your intended pattern. That size of quilt was quite an undertaking for your first. My first quilt was a quilted pillow. You would have thought I hung the moon :)

Well done on sticking with it! I started a quilt about 10 years ago but didn't get too far before giving up. Such hard work and I should have used squares instead of hexagons but you've inspired me to maybe take another look at it.

Congrats, Marsha! It is lovely. I will keep returning to re-read. I've been so embarrassed to even show my progress on the first quilt (in 21 years) I just started. This is a really wonderful journal which has inspired me to document my progress.

Congrats on completing your quilt. I read the lens throughout to know that were you able to complete ? Quilting does require infinite patience and it is really inspiring to know that you didn't even have prior experience. Enjoyed the virtual tour in quilting with the lens.
