My Fish
As the proud new parent of four georgous guppies - three female, and one male, and a beautiful Betta named Captain Jack, I just couldn't keep my love and excitement to myself, so I decided to share it with you!
I hope you enjoy hearing about our adventures.
Right now two of the three female guppiesĀ seem to be pregnant, so everythime I see anything floating in the tank I run over to make sure it isn't babies.
Guppies have fry every 28 days, so I'm looking forward to having tons of babies - but hopefully not too many for our poor 30 gallon tank.

AKA Marshmallow
I was at Walmart last night, and I fell in love with the most beautiful male betta. Since bettas are also known as Siamese fighting fish, because they will fight to the death if another male invades there territory, I had a delimma. Since Captain Jack is already in the big aquarium where would I put the new betta?Well, I just happened to have an old one gallon aquarium lying around, and I decided that I could put the new betta, aka Marshmallow in it. (I know, that's not really a masculine name, but that's the one that came to mind!)
When I saw Marshmallow in the store he had a white body, with a touch of pink irredescense to it, and white fins with a touch of blue.
After less than 3 minutes in the new one gallon, with clean water, and a bit of java moss, he turned pink with lavendar fins. You can still see a touch of blue and white in the fins, but he looks like a completely different fish!
He's still a little nervous, and I just cleared out the area around the tank of everything red, since he is flaring and hiding when we bring a red cup near the tank.
I've heard most bettas flare at red, although Captain Jack doesn't. I'm not sure why that color sets them off though.
This is a picture of Marshmallow right after I put him in his new home.
Marshmallow in His Cup - Stressed
I'd heard that you could bring a betta home from the store and realize that you're betta was a completely different color at home, in less stressful conditions.I was surprised at how different Marshmallow looked in his cup, and how quickly he changed after we moved him to his new tank.

The Inhabitants - Captain Jack
The gorgeous blue betta that I just had to have when I saw him.He almost started out with a life of crime, after I erroneosly blamed him for several missing feeder guppies shortly after his arrival.
The Inhabitants - Little Boy Blue
Little Boy Blue is our current male guppy. He's very happy chasing the females around, although the girls aren't always happy with his attention.I've seen fish in the fishstore that look like him labeled as turquose guppies, but I've seen similar guppies on ebay listed as purple guppies...if you know what he is let me know, I'd love to know.

The Plants - The Java Moss
I was so excited to find java moss at my local fish store (aka lfs) yesterday for $0.99! I was beginning to think that I was going to have to buy some off of ebay because I couldn't find it! Look at this huge clump that I got!I've decided it's always better to go ask my husband if I'm interested in something - before I found DH the clump I got was 2 clumps, after I found him they gave it all to me for the price of one.
Clowns!
This is one of our 3 clown plecos peeking out of the cave. The have has been in the tank for about a month, and they've just started exploring it. Fishie updates
1/8/2007 - I woke up this morning to find all of the fish swimming around.I knew something was up, so I looked and saw a tiny little thing flitting around the tank.
Blue Girl (the guppy with the blue tail) has given birth.
I am so excited. I've seen at least 3 fry at the same time, and I was able to catch one and put it in the breeder tank.
The others were just too hard to catch, and I didn't want to stress them out anymore - especially since Freckles still hasn't given birth.
I do have some breeder grass in the tank, so hopefully the babies will flock to that, and be safe.
I can't wait to see what they look like when they grow up.
We went to a couple of petstores yesterday just to look, and I realized that we got really lucky.
Our male guppy (Little Boy Blue) has a blue tail, and a silvery blue body, one female (Blue Girl) has a blue tail with black streaks, another (Red) has a tiny bit of blue in the tail, surrounded by red, and the last (Freckles) has a tiny bit of blue, surrounded by red, with black dots in the tail.
1/26/2007 Unfortunately it looks like only one of the fry has survived.
I'm not sure if it's a male or a female, but I call "her" Daredevil. She has been swimming with the adults for about 3 days now, and although Red will go after her every once in a while, she doesn't run too far.
I saw a teeny spot of black on her tail around 1/21/2007, and on 1/23/2007 I noticed a little yellow color right at the base of her tail. DH thinks its red though, so we'll see what color it really is.
We also got 3 spotted cory cats last night.
They look like they are having a lot of fun, and 2 seem to be swimming around together while the third one is off by himself.
They are pretty fast, so it's hard to get pictures of them, but we are trying.
I was planning on getting oto's to clean the tank, but while we were at Petco they put a sign on the oto's saying they weren't for sale...then at Petsmart there were more dead ones than live ones in the tank.
I knew oto's were hard to acclimate to the tank, since they are usually caught in the wild, and I just don't want to deal with more dead fish :-(.
The spotted cories help clean the substrate (we're actually using aquating planting media), and the main reason I wanted the oto's was to clean the algae and the substrate.
Fortunately I realized that the magnet algae cleaner we got from walmart really works, so I don't need to get a fish specifically
Flushing live fish
This is a duel module so - I just got a call from someone in another town who was going to flush over 100 fish if we couldn't come pick them up the next day.
Of course we couldn't take 100 fish at one time, and even if we could we couldn't go up there the next day.
Do you flush your live fish when you get tired of them?
Do you think people should do that?
Should people flush live fish?
Fetching blurbs now... please stand byYes - flush the fish
No - don't flush the fish
Sarah says:
I don't think people should flush live fish! If you can't keep your pets give them away - most pet stores will take fish and put them up for adoption or sell them if you can't keep them.
I've also seen fish given away on sites like freecycle, or craigslist, and they are usually snapped up pretty quickly.
It might mean a little more work for you, but there are people out there who want your fish - why not let them have them, and enjoy them instead of ending their lives early because you don't want them anymore!
