5 Tips to save money when you fly
Did you know that you don't have to pay full price for airline tickets every time you travel? In fact the airlines are more then happy to provide cheap flights and discount air fares to their customers. The only catch is finding these deals, which once you know where to look and who to talk to is easier then you may think.
It will take some time and patience at first but as learn how to do it saving money on all your airline reservations will become second nature. Your travel budget will also thank you because you'll have more money in your pocket as you travel to your final destination.
Here are 5 things you can do to find inexpensive airline tickets:
1. Call the airlines ticketing number. Most people don't know this but the airlines run discount air fares nearly everyday. Unfortunately they don't advertise these to the general public but most of the time all it takes is a call to an airlines ticketing service agent and asking what specials they currently have running. The best time to do this is in the very early morning hours to take advantage of the daily ticketing system updates that happen around midnight.
2. Know the best times of the week and day to travel. During peak travel times the airlines can charge higher prices because the demand is there. Try to be flexible with your travel times and fly during the slow times of the week and day, when the airlines are more willing to discount tickets to put people in their cabins.
3. Plan ahead. You can find good discounts on cheap flights if you make your reservations between 4 months to 2 weeks in advance. Obviously the closer you purchase your tickets to your travel date the higher the cost. You can also apply this thinking to your travel destination as well. Many destination vacation spots reduce their prices to attract tourists during their off-season.
4. Package deals can offer great savings. Vacation packages that offer cheap flights or discount air fares along with saving on accommodations are another way to find vacation savings. One of the best places to find this type of deal is with all inclusive cruise packages.
5. Shop around for the best deals. You do have to exercise some patience when looking for cheap air fares. Don't whip out your credit card at the first good deal you find. Shop around at the different travel and airline ticketing sites to see if you can save even more money. You do have to be careful though because ticket prices can change from day to day. Once you better understand how the ticketing system works you will find that you'll intuitively know when you are getting a good deal.
What is 'bumping'?
An airline always experiences a certain amount of last minute cancellations or late travellers that miss their flight. This is their way of ensuring that the plane is full to maximum capacity by overbooking the amount of seats available.
The more popular a route, the more likely the flight is to be oversold. Keep in mind, passengers ticketed on flights canceled due to bad weather are not eligible for bumping benefits. The Department of Transportation requires commercial airlines flying 60 passengers or more and originating in the United States to seek out volunteers before bumping anyone.
Such volunteers can receive very lucrative rewards, from cash to free air vouchers. Generally the longer the delay, the better the payoff, and if the airline cannot secure enough volunteers to forfeit their seats the first time around, the payoff will generally increase as the flight nears take-off time and the airline grows more desperate to empty seats. Some airlines will even offer meals, free drink coupons, free headsets on the next flight, an upgrade to first-class, a free long-distance phone call, or admission into airline clubs.

Keep Safe When You fly
Here's what you can do to minimize the risk of theft when you fly.
1. Hang it up carefully. If you are in the habit of hanging your jacket or coat in the closet, take all your valuables - especially your wallet - out of the pockets. That's the first place a thief will look.
2. Mark your bags. More and more bags look alike these days, so put something on your luggage that makes it stand out from the rest: a sticker or ribbon - anything that makes a mix-up impossible. This will prevent the intentional - and unintentional - misappropriation of your property.
3. Dummy up. Carry a "dummy" wallet or purse that contains only one credit card, $20 in cash and one form of identification. Put the rest of the usual contents in your carry-on bag. That way, you'll have less to lose if the dummy is lifted or lost.
4. Walk it through. If there is a long security line, your bags may clear the X-ray screener before you make it through the metal detector. Wait until you are ready to walk through the machine before releasing your purse, wallet or laptop. Sure, there is camera surveillance at security, but your thief will be long gone before any review takes place. Fact: More items go missing in the security line than from any other place.
5. Stow it nearby. Once you're on the airplane, keep your carry-on bag nearby. Some back-of-the-plane passengers think it's smart to stow their bag up front, for an easy grab during deplaning. Believe me, a watchful thief can grab that bag a lot faster than you can push and shove your way to the front of the line.
6. Bury the treasure. If you put your billfold or any other valuables in your bag, don't put them in the outermost compartments. That's pretty much telling a thief, "Help yourself."
7. Watch your seat. Be careful when storing your bag under the seat in front of you; don't face any pockets forward, or the passenger in front of you may walk off with your goods. Also, never leave anything of value on your seat when you leave it to go to the lavatory or to take a stroll.
8. Do not pass go. Take special care of your passport and know where it is at all times. Losing your passport will ruin your entire trip; trust me on this one.
9. Exercise common sense. Carry your purse with the opening facing toward you, and keep your wallet out of your back pocket. I know this sounds obvious, but when people go flying, common sense often gets checked with the baggage.
10. Speak up. Don't overreact if you catch someone handling your bag (innocent mistakes do happen), but be firm none the less. Similarly, if you witness a theft, tell someone immediately -- a flight attendant, gate agent, security guard -- anyone. I'm sure you would want their help if you were the victim.
