Graphic Design Artist Career Basic 101

Graphic Design - The Career
Graphic Design. The ins and outs of the Graphic Design career. As a graphic design artist I can provide clues for people thinking about this design major. I took photography, drawing, design and marketing classes. I worked at an advertising agency for 4 years before going freelance at home.
I use photoshop, indesign, Illustrator and some mac software. I've done simple websites, but nothing fancy. I like to take a drawing and make it digital, usually redrawing it by hand in photoshop or illustrator. Working with digital art now is (very) different than it was in the 90's. Even back in the 80's and pre 80's, It was done all by hand to paper or some media. In many ways it's easier now to show and sell your art and designs. When dealing with redoing and revising projects before printing it's nice to have it saved to rework. Also working with layers is such a time saver.
Concept Development - Presentation is key

Going through college (years ago) computers were barely in the classrooms for art. Sure they were there for English and Journalism, but the money wasn't funded yet. I think the school boards weren't sure about why the art department would even need a computer. So one teacher somehow got one computer in a tiny room beside the class. Well I was the only one that seemed interested and he showed me a few things on the computer. He gave me a design program, it fit onto 10 floppy disks! That must have been 10-12MB.
Graphic Design has changed the way we do things. It's actually easier now to share your artwork than ever before. Much cheaper too. Back then, in the early 90's, when we had an art piece to sell, it had (sometimes still does) to be printed in large numbers. Now there is print on demand and the internet. Your customer wants just one print, it's in the mail. They want to see a proof of the logo design, it's already done! Just check your inbox.
Your Typical Design Studio

My last year in college a teacher found me a job at a printing company. This is where I started computer training. I learned Quark, Freehand and Illustrator. I had to get documents ready for press. I had to design stationary, catalogs, cards, scan images and type. Typing is something you will do a lot. It helps to know how to write and know grammar (?). At that time, the company probably only used internet for the office up front, like for emails. There wasn't a network like we have now in offices.

Typography was one of my favorites to focus on. Some projects in one class were to take a magazine ad, put tracing paper over it, using markers color it exactly the same. From there it was to examine the elements and placement of things. Then with the same ad make a new one, but design it better. Which was almost impossible because they were already perfectly designed!
To everything there is a process.

It was a few months later, one of my teachers got a call from an advertising agency looking to hire an art student. He gave me the information and I applied for the job. What helped me here the most was a few things:
1. My teacher's support!
2. My college portfolio!!
3. Hard work on art projects while other students did little effort. Typography & Design.
4. Printing samples from the printing company I was at.
My portfolio was organized with relative information. Showing my typography abilities, paintings and drawings. What my interviewer liked the most were the newspaper ads, brochures and printing examples that I collected in my printing prepress job. These were more of the skills the agency wanted to see.

My Graphic Design Career History
Advertising and Marketing

1. A few months out of college, I was hired at an advertising/marketing company. They helped companies with marketing and advertising. Our job was to make them look good with quality designs that would bring in more clients or business.
I learned Quark fast, but I would call a friend at the local printing company for solutions to computer issues. In those days there were many problems that I had to solve without any training, but resolved to expert advice from fellows in the same business. Projects would get their approval and I would save my design onto a tape, zip disk, and later on CDs. This included the document, art images and font files. I called printing companies for quotes, then take the files to who had the best quote. My boss taught me a lot about the business.
2. Four years later (2002) I began to work at home. The office had closed. One of our clients hired me to design book covers. The beginning of a home career in freelance design. Book covers are designed and published through email approvals. I finish a book cover, some inside pages and prepare it for the publisher. I've made logos, prepared designs for printing, and done various design jobs all at home on a mac computer.
3. I think it was 2006 I started a cafepress shop. In 2008 I opened a Squidoo account. I've taught myself to fix photos with digital restoration, where I can make scratches and fading disappear or people and objects removed.
4. Now 13 years later (2011), I'm doing a little less book covers and a bit more t-shirt designs. It's very time consuming, but I love doing it! I must admit that Squidoo fills up a good part of my work day too.
You won't be expected to know everything! But some things are important.

- Learning the fundamentals of design like how to properly crop a piece for printing, and the different color modes like RGB and CMYK is important. I like the creative process like you illustrated above with the logo design and how it became the finished product. You had an interesting story to boot!

- A very enjoyable read about how you became a graphic designer. I've become hooked on Zazzle and the time I invested in learning and practising skills is beginning to pay off. I admire you professional designers and the world would be a duller place without you. This is a most unique lens, blessed by a passing Angel.

- Variety of creative medium has been generated and has been infused to the majority of the world’s cover through the advancement of technology. That is why, logo designs are such a big hit when business and other ventures will be taken into consideration since appreciation and recognition of the product is primarily based not on unique logos that truly captures attention and emotions.

- I liked your lens about graphic design and working in the printing world. I have also worked in printing and have been a typesetter, a proofreader, and graphic artist too. I remember setting things up and pasting up by hand. Isn't it great how the computer and software have sped things up? You have some great advice here - thanks for doing this lens.
