Home Security Becoming a Necessity?
Many approaches are being employed right now for home security.
First of all, before buying a monitored home security system, consider and do what you can on your own first. You can replace weak doors with strong solid ones made of wood or steel. You should also get some deadbolts and locks; they are very effective in deterring burglars and break-ins. You can also become a part of the Neighborhood Watch and cooperate with your neighbors in looking out for each other.
In choosing your home security system, you have to pick one that will can accommodate your home and your family's safety. Home security companies will sit down with you and talk you over their packages and benefits, as well as ask for your opinion and suggestions, to further improve upon the security of your home.
Home security habits are also being emphasized. When you're not home and are away for a long time, suspend all subscriptions and make it seem like there's still someone at your home. Ask your neighbors to help maintain the illusion that there's someone present at your home, like, for example, by parking his/her car in your driveway from time to time.
Getting a monitored security system is preferred, of course, since home security companies like ADT and Brinks will be able to guard your house 24/7. They'll also be able to contact the authorities in cases of emergency.

- ALWAYS KEEP YOUR KEYS TO YOURSELF. Don't give them to anyone else and don't leave them under your doormat or above your door.
- DON'T LET STRANGERS INTO THE HOUSE, they might turn out to be burglars trying to check out your house for anything they can loot out.
- LOCK THE DOORS AND THE WINDOWS. Do this even when you're presently at home. Burglars can just take a quick break-in with you in the kitchen or on your backyard.
- DON'T DISPLAY YOUR VALUABLES. Showing off your valuables, even unintentionally, would be like inviting burglars to steal them.
- CHANGE YOUR SCHEDULE OFTEN AND BE UNPREDICTABLE. Burglars usually observe a house and then try to determine when it would be empty. Throw him off guard by avoiding regular appointments or day-outs.
- WATCH WHAT YOU THROW. A burglar would know that you bought yourself a new television or computer if you throw its box outside and exposing it to the people passing by. Make sure you cut down the boxes and shred personal information to avoid identity theft.
- ALWAYS BE ALERT. It will be to your advantage if you check out what's happening around in your neighborhood and look for anything suspicious. This way, when you see someone who could be a burglar, you can take more precautions.
Little Reminders For Home Security
* The no. 1 home security device to buy would be the wireless door and window alarm, since about 80% of burglars break in through the door.
* Fake stickers can lead a burglar to think that you're too cheap to secure your own home with a real home security system.
* Flimsy chain guards can be utterly useless; teenagers can break it.
* Light timers and security cameras are great deterrents.
* When you have sliding glass doors, a Charlie bar can be used to protect it.
* Converting door locks to double-cylinder types, in case of emergencies like fire, would be a good idea for the safety of the family.
* Dogs are great additions for home security.
Home Security Tips For the Summer
The main advise that the NBFAA gives is that we should discourage the thieves from choosing our home to break into.
Thieves prefer to break into homes that are unoccupied, and so it would do well for you to keep your house looking like there are still people in there even though all of you are on vacation. Using timers on your lights, radio, and other appliances is a great idea. You can also ask your neighbors to take keep your mail and subscriptions and take out your trash cans on trash day. Leaving your car parked in the driveway is also a good idea. You can also ask your neighbor to park in your driveway from time to time.
Take time to take care of your lawn before going, too. Mow the lawn and ask your neighbors to take care of it for you if you're going to be gone for a long time.
Basic protection still applies, of course. Make sure you locked all windows and doors, and don't forget your garage doors. Adding deadbolt locks would also be a good idea. Don't neglect to trim the trees and bushes, too, to give the thieves less hiding places.
Get help from your neighbors and friends, too, to watch over your house from time to time. Inform them of how long you'll be gone, when you'll be back, and what to do in case emergencies happen. Leave a house key and a contact number to someone you trust, and you can also inform the police if you want.
Home security systems are also on the list to keep your home secure. Have your security company monitor your home while you're away, and make sure that whoever you give access to enter your home knows how to activate and deactivate the security system to prevent false alarms.
Must-Have Home Security Habits
... and why not make it your habit?
- You can use deadlocks for your doors, and install internal ones for your garage and basement. If you already have these, then make sure that they're still working properly.
- Windows are some of the burglars' hot spots. Therefore you should make sure you have window locks working properly.
- Make sure to have security lights mounted on places where entry points will be visible.
- Check your alarm system and see if it's working well. If you're going on a vacation or a trip, contact your security system company and inform them to have your home monitored while you're away.
- If possible, keep your valuables in a safe deposit box. You can put them in the bank for safekeeping, or have your own safe installed (always consult first when installing a safe in your home).
- When you go out, leave your home as if there's still someone inside. Do not draw all curtains down, or shut all the lights out. It's an invitation to burglars if you leave your home in an abandoned state.
- You can also try to have power timers for your radio and lights to go off at timed intervals. this can give the impression that there's still someone inside even when there's really not.
- Turn off the ring tone of your telephone. the constant ringing of the phone will indicate that no one's at home to receive any call.
- Secure the outside of your home of any tool that a burglar could use to break in. For example, don't leave a ladder near a window.
- Ask for help from your neighbors. Ask them if they could look after your home while you're away. ask them to collect any mail, or subscriptions, too. This way, burglars will think that there's still someone keeping an eye on your home.
- If possible, have someone stay at your house. This way, there is really someone looking after your house all through the day and night.
More Security Tips
- Pertaining to your plants helping to deter burglars from using your windows to break through, it would be an advantage to use thorny plants and bushes. Thieves and burglars would have to think twice if they don't want to get hurt and tangled with these "security plants."
- When at home and your windows are open, be alert always. A thief might already be sneaking around your house and taking off with your belongings without you knowing it.
- When not at home and you want to leave a window open, only leave a second story window open, never a ground floor window!
- Check to see that there is nothing on your yard that a thief can use to climb over to the open window on the second floor. These includes ladders, tree branches, etc.
- Constantly share information with your neighbors and be aware of what goes on in the neighborhood.
- Install a layered security, preferably with three or four layers of security to slow down a burglar and at most discourage him to break into your house.
- Don't only upgrade your home security system, because there isn't a 100% guarantee that you will be far from burglary crimes when you have a home security system. Join neighborhood watches and become familiar with your area. This way, you'll know when something is amiss and be ready for anything.
A Child Coming Home Alone
Usage of advance home security devices have been increasingly expanded not only to deter burglars and intruders but also to ensure that children arrive and stay safely home. But these home security systems require require a child's cooperation for you to ensure his safety.
The following are reminders for both parents and children to remember for the children's safety:
* Your child should memorize his/her full name, their address, and the mobile phone numbers of his/her parents.
* Parents should keep important information like emergency phone numbers beside the phone at home.
* The children should be taught to observe their home for any strange things, like an open door or window when all windows and doors should be closed.
* Children should be taught to call you or the authorities when he/she suspects that their home is not safe.
* The children should be taught to be careful when answering the door or telephone. It would be better if he/she never answers the door or the phone when he/she is alone at home.
* Children should also be taught not to play outside when home alone.
* Children should, of course, be taught to arm and disarm the home security system.
* Many parents now use the 2-Way Voice feature to communicate directly with their child through the control panel when the alarm is triggered.

I would like to add that a noise and lights are the best weapons against burglars while you are away from home. In addition to keeping lights on, or controlling them with the timer, you can play, at the same time, a CD with prerecorded household sounds, kitchen sounds like cutlery hitting each other, various tools, bathroom sounds, toilet flush, etc. With this CD your home will look and moreover SOUND occupied while you are away. It's inexpensive (only $3.99 per CD, and you are allowed to make up to five CD copies for your own use) yet very effective solution. Have a sample or try a CD at www.DeterrentSounds.com.
