Internet Business Strategies

A lot of people tend to get trapped in analysis paralysis -- and they never get their Internet business off the ground. They either plan and plan and plan, or plan TO plan someday, but they don't actually accomplish anything. Don't go there. If you want an online business that supports you in a comfortable lifestyle, you've got to do something today. The time is now! Get started!

The key to starting your online business is to use the skills you have. The business venture you choose to begin should be something you could use to create revenue fast... Your Online Cash Machine!

Creating a successful online business means putting your feet to the floor and getting down to it. You have to actively work to reach your goal. It used to be a bit easier to create a successful business online, but it's never been so easy that you didn't have to work at it. Don't let anyone tell you that you "missed your chance". You haven't! The Internet offers each of us an amazing opportunity to become an entrepreneur capable of great success.

Everyone's ready to quit their 9-5, but you have to plan your way there, get going and stick to it. It's easy to get lost without direction and you'll never get anywhere without ACTION. Read through this lens and get on the right track.

Another thing... I've said it before and I'll keep saying it. Treat your online business as a real business... because it is! Invest in it just like you would an offline business. I can't tell you how many just don't see it that way and they never get their online business off the ground.

Last but not least: Don't quit on yourself - make your dreams come true!

DO SOMETHING MEANINGFUL AND "VIRAL"

The best way to "spread the word" about your site is to do something meaningful and viral. Here's an excellent example:

'What can I do?' - SiCKO

Anyone who cares about the current situation as to the health and health care system of the USA will spread the word about this documentary willingly and in some cases lavishly. For instance, many California doctors and nurses have banded together to form a group called "Scrubs for Sicko". A group of them are actually projecting the movie trailer onto the wall of the Kaiser building!

Now, you may wonder how you can put something like this to use, but check it out and get ideas of your own, understandably to a lesser degree, but it will still work to build your credibility, loyalty, and traffic to your site!

Think about it!

Social Media Marketing Success

Viral Strategies

Thisi s really an awesome example...

Nike's online community...
Nike, Apple, Community = Success
You guys sell apparel, what does an online community have to do with that?

For Nike, you are no longer just buying a sneaker. You are joining the largest global running club. We offer you shoes and apparel that helps you run longer and faster. This is our "hardware." We now offer you cool "software": ways to track your progress, tools to find people to challenge. We want to keep you active and motivated.

THINGS YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR WEB SITE TODAY

  • 1. Website Development: Insure quality content, add at least one new content page for your site. Search engine spiders love new content, it's like food to them and they will gobble it up!

    2. SEO: Spend some time gaining relevant backlinks using varying keyword anchor text. That means that you need to link keywords with your web site URL whenever you can.

    3. Internet Marketing: Submit to several search engines manually and take time to choose the proper categories, use the right keywords and have a quality description.

If you're just starting out, build your backlinks through similarly themed sites, the smaller search engines, and article writing. Then, once those are built up, submit to the major search engines, if they haven't already found your site.

    4. Create a Google Sitemap and submit it to Google. You can even get a free sitemap generator here. It also creates one for Yahoo and it's very easy to use.
  • 5. Go to this survey page and see how well you know what users prefer as to web design layout. Then rethink your website layout. You'll get the preferences of others after you take the survey.
  • 6. Be current with your site. Is there a holiday coming up? Take advantage of it by putting something on your site about it, such as Happy Mother's Day!
  • 7. If you haven't done it already, set up your Facebook and Twitter accounts. Follow me at mywebgal!
  • 8. Write articles and distribute to article directories such as ezinearticles.com. This not only give you back links to your site, but helps to establish you as an expert in your field. The Resource Box at the end of your article should contain information about you and your web site. Be sure to use keywords as your anchor text in your links to your site.

THREE THINGS YOU CAN DO FOR YOURSELF

Making the important decisions and strategic moves to build your business online is great, but you also need to build your self-confidence so you don't give up your online business. And remember, making your web site successful takes time and commitment.

Here are three things you can do to keep yourself going...
  • 1. Find role models of successful netpreneurs and study what they do. They don't have to be in the same business. If you find a web site that you're impressed with, you've found a wealth of knowledge to decipher!
  • 2. You need support players. Those with strengths in areas that add value to your strengths. And beware of negative influences... only discuss your plans with supportive people and don't mention them to those that always come across negatively!
  • 3. Start creating your team. Interview designers, marketers, writers... whoever you feel you will need to create and establish your online business. Keep in mind that your team isn't working "for" you, they are working "with" you to create success.

WHAT I DO TO CREATE RESIDUAL INCOME

Creating a residual income means that you keep earning money at something that you set up once and the money comes in continually without effort (or much effort).

I not only recommend the following paths to ongoing incomes, I am signed up and use each one listed below to keep additional earnings coming in month after month:
1 Shopping Cart Affiliate Program
Nearly all the affiliate programs that I sign up for and recommend to others, I use myself. Case in point, 1 Shopping Cart. I have used this service for over 4 years and have never found a better shopping cart or autoresponder system, even having experienced others via my clients accounts.
Domain Name and Hosting Reseller
Being an affiliate or reseller of a product or service that fits what you do is a great idea. In my case, as a web developer, anything to do with web sites is a good fit. Research affiliate programs and reseller programs that would fit with what you do.

If you'd like to get into that business, just go here and sign up (small fee).
Did you know PayPal has an affiliate program?
It's true. While you may not make a lot of money with PayPal's affiliate program, you can make money with it.

WHAT I LEARNED TODAY

Every morning I go through my emails first thing. I get emails from clients, prospects, spammers (of course) and a myriad of sources that keep me in the know. Here I will share a collection of some of what I learn from the newsletters, articles and blog posts that I feel are worth telling you about. Btw, the newest posts are at the bottom of this section. Enjoy!

Google Trends and Hot Topics Daily
Nothing interesting came in my email today, so I thought I'd give you a "tool" that I use and you might find worthy of your attention.

Google displays the top 100 search terms of the day, which will let you know what's hot. If there's something listed that is aligned with your website, why not add something about it to your homepage? Create a Hot Topic box on your site, or something along those lines. They are hot keywords (though they usually don't stay hot for very long), but you'd be updating your page often with hot topics. Even if it doesn't make a difference with your search engine rankings, it would make a difference with your visitors!
How Big is the Web?
In the September 2007 survey we (Netcraft) received responses from 135,166,473 sites. This is an increase of 7.2 million sites since last month, the largest growth in the number of sites recorded by the survey. The rate of growth, around 5.5%, is high but not exceptional by historical standards.
Boost Your Website Visibility
We have been keeping a close eye on Ask.com and are seeing traffic increases from Ask.com for some of our clients. In fact, one e-commerce client over this summer has seen transactions more than double from Ask.com referrers. A 100% increase in transactions - now that really gets our attention!

We've shared with Wagon readers about submitting an XML sitemap to Google, to Yahoo and updated readers about the potential of submitting to MSN this Fall. I thought I would remind readers that you can also submit your XML sitemap to Ask.com and provide some simple how to's.
The future of search: no keywords
Matt Kain: "When you really look at it, search query language is pretty odd. Imagine the conversation in keywords, if you were looking for an apartment. You'd walk up to the man in the first floor apartment and say, "Two-bedroom sublet NYC." The super would answer "http colon slash slash dub-dub-dub dot 2-bedroom sublet NYC arm-and-a-leg dot com.""
10 Customizable Start Pages to Consider
By Aidan Henry: Ajax start pages are easy-to-use, customizable webpages, allowing you to keep up with the latest news and add interactive content. You can add new RSS feeds and widgets, and move your content around the page. In some ways start pages are the successors to the portals of the 90's. They have yet to break into the mainstream, however the promotion of iGoogle and the presence of MyYahoo are facilitating the transition. Let's explore some of the top players - and also some you may not have been aware of.

How To Design A Signup Form That Will Boost Subscriptions
This is an excellent and informative article:

Even if you're a genius in directing traffic to your site, traffic alone won't make you any money. If your visitors leave without making a purchase, your traffic is as useful as a fork is to eat ice cream.

And unfortunately, only a very low percentage of online visitors buy something on their first visit. That's why you will have to make sure to draw them back to your site, establish a trusting relationship and remind them of the great products you're selling. How would you do all this?

Use The Power Of The Signup form to capture their information... (Read More)

Should you put keywords in your URL?
Let's be honest. URLs without keywords in them can rank higher than URLs with keywords in them. If the webmaster does a better job at on-page SEO and link building than the webmaster of the URL with the keyword-rich URL then he could, and likely will, rank higher than the non-keyworded URL. Why? Because keywords in the URL is just one criteria that search engines look at in their ranking factors. But, and here's the rub, it is a factor.
What is on page SEO?
On-page SEO is anything that you do to your site files themselves in order to rank better in the search engines. This differs from off-page SEO, which is primarily concerned with gaining links to your site from other sites.

Google Drops PageRank For Many Sites
This week it seems that Google made some type of manual Toolbar PageRank reduction on a handful of major blogs and portal sites like the Washington Post, ProBlogger, CopyBlogger and Forbes.com. Some of these sites had PageRank scores of 7 which have now dropped to 5, scores of 6 which have now dropped to 4 and so on.
Server Hacked? How To Notify Google to Restore Google Search Rankings
What happens if you discover a folder on your server that has a bunch of spammy content that has no relevance to your site whatsoever? Typically, Google will deindex your site when it discovers this content.

Note: Unfortunately, this has happened to some of my past clients. It seems that servers are hacked mostly on sites that are not frequently updated (or old and never updated). Keep a watchful eye on your sites, particularly behind the scenes in your file manager or ftp program. You may not know when your site has had folders added to it that you can't see without checking your files.
Google shifts strategy
It used to be that Google was all about new products. While the internet giant still has new products in the works, a report in The Washington Post says Google has redirected its engineers to focus on improving existing products and technologies.

The idea behind the shift, which includes the launch of Android and OpenSocial, is to make online activity so easy for consumers that they will do everything on the internet.
Guide to Twitter as a Tool for Marketing and PR
..."There's both a social/play and a social/communicate aspect to Twitter that makes it productive as a promotional tool for pointing to interesting things you've found on the web as well as a tool for building credibility and influence. The Death of Email
By Chad Lorenz
Posted Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007, at 12:32 PM ET

By 2002, everyone in my family had become an Internet convert. For the technophobic older generation, signing up for an e-mail account was a concession to us youngsters-if the kids don't call home, they thought, we'll just reach them through the computer. Everyone was especially eager to send messages to my niece, a kid who wasn't all that chatty on the phone but was almost always glued to her PC. But while the rest of us happily exchanged forwards and life updates, she almost never piped up. Eventually, I sussed out the truth: She was too busy sending IMs and text messages to bother with e-mail. That's when I realized that my agility with e-mail no longer marked me as a tech-savvy young adult. It made me a lame old fogey. [More]
Viral Videos: Marketing using You Tube
Dan Ackerman Greenberg: "Over the past year, I have run clandestine marketing campaigns meant to ensure that promotional videos become truly viral, as these examples have become in the extreme. Digg Images Launches
Submitting images to Digg is basically the same as submitting news and videos, with a few notable differences. When you submit a link to a web page containing multiple images, Digg will crawl the page and present up to ten image thumbnails from that page for you to choose the one you want. We've also added this technology to news submissions.
Google knows more than marketers
Google has dropped the Onsite Advertiser Sign-up feature, better known among advertisers as the "advertise on this site" component of AdSense. According to a report at TechCrunch, the reason is simple: Google's computers do a better job of placing ads than humans.

HitTail is the only product that reveals in real time which keywords people use to find your website. When acted on, they can increase the natural search traffic to your website.
Google's Wikipedia???
Google Inc. is working on a new Internet encyclopedia that will consist of material submitted by people who want to be identified as experts and possibly profit from their knowledge.

The concept, outlined late Thursday in a posting on Google's Web site, poses a potential challenge to the nonprofit Wikipedia, which has drawn upon the collective wisdom of unpaid, anonymous contributors to emerge as a widely used reference tool.
Google indexing Unlinked Pages?
In October, a WebmasterWorld member has been monitoring his website and has noticed that Google is beginning to index pages that seem unlinked from anywhere. He suspects that either Google is using Toolbar data, someone is linking to these pages deliberately, or he may have caused the pages to be linked somehow (but he's pretty sure that's not the case).

Others agree in the comments section that this is happening!

Hmmm... not such good news... what about "hidden" pages we want hidden?
New Search Within A Site (Google)
Through experimentation, we found that presenting users with a search box as part of the result increases their likelihood of finding the exact page they are looking for. So over the past few days we have been testing, and today we have fully rolled out, a search box that appears within some of the search results themselves. This feature will now occur when we detect a high probability that a user wants more refined search results within a specific site. Like the rest of our snippets, the sites that display the site search box are chosen algorithmically based on metrics that measure how useful the search box is to users.

Marketers Moving to Social Media
Even though tens of millions of users were flocking to social media sites every day, most marketers stayed away. They either didn't understand how to join the conversations-without sounding like shills-or they were frightened away by the prospect of associating their brands with questionable content.

But things are changing.

Companies are learning how to leverage social media and tap into the rising tide of consumers participating in social network sites, blogs, wikis and Twitter.

DEFINING YOUR USP...

USP (Unique Selling Proposition)

This is the shortest lesson on defining your USP...

Answer the following three questions as precisely as possible, in brief, and learn it well enough that you can recite it at a moment's notice:

1. Who are you that I should believe what you say?
2. Why should I care?
3. Why should I act now?

Once you have that, you will be more focused in everything you do.

POLL: WHAT'S YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE

Many people struggle to learn how to make money online but truly want to achieve success with their online business.

Loading poll. Please Wait...

STEPS TO YOUR FIRST WEB SITE

  • 1. Determine your niche. While most marketers will tell you to research keywords and find out if the market is "HOT", I recommend that YOU pick a niche that you are most interested in, know and are passionate about, and what you'd like to learn more about. You just can't go wrong with your choice if you are passionate about it! Squidoo lenses are perfect examples!

So, should you go wide or narrow in subject matter for your niche?

It depends on your reason for building your web site. Is it to sell a product? Is it to earn an income with Google Adsense? Is it to pre-sell affiliate programs and/or products?

My philosopy has changed a bit over the years that I've been online. Experience is the best teacher! I believe in a wide subject matter, but incorporated into many web sites containing the narrower subject matters.

Why? Each of your web sites can link to each other creating a "satellite system" of sites. Good incoming, links of the same theme.

  • 2. Go to BetterWebBusiness.com and research domain names and find one that you like and is available. Buy it there. Along with that purchase, add hosting. You'll save some money buying them together and yet you'll have independent access to each. You can get $3.99 per month hosting that will be quite adequate for your needs.

One of my passive income streams is Google Adsense sites. They can be extremely lucrative. So much so that I'm slowly building up my sites to increase that income. It may eventually be my sole income.

To accomodate my many sites, I purchase Virtual Dedicated Servers from www.BetterWebBusiness.com to house them all at a much more affordable price than purchasing individual hosting for each.

  • 3. Perform a search for your web site idea on Google, Yahoo and MSN. See what is out there, what is offered, how it's arranged, etc. Bookmark examples of the sites you like. While you're at it, you may want to investigate possible affiliate programs that go hand in hand with your concept.

While you're searching, you should not only look at what you like, but what you don't like. You can learn as much from what is wrong with a site as you can from what is right.

Write down what you like, what reaches you on a personal level, what turns you off... makes you leave a web site. These are important things to consider.

  • 4. Create an outline of content for your web site. This outline should become a blueprint for laying out your site, building the navigation, and organizing your ideas for creating and/or gathering the content. A logical progression of information, laid out in an easy to understand way, with simple navigation, will be happily received by your visitors. Visitors leave a web site if it's not presented in an orderly fashion.

Don't skimp on the effort it will take to accomplish this. If you do it right, you'll reap the rewards when it comes to actually creating your web site by saving time, money and frustration.

  • 5. Start putting together your content. You can write it yourself, outsource it, or purchase a good PLR (Private Label Rights) package.

While you're at it, think of the best keywords for your site and use them in a solid, readable fashion. Don't try to stuff in as many keywords as you can, but be sure you use them in the content. Search engines will weigh the content of your page looking for keywords so they can categorize the site. If you overdo it, you could be penalized, but if you don't have enough, you won't be categorized properly. Keep in mind readability. If you do that, you won't go wrong. After all, your site needs to interest visitors, and while you want a good ranking in the search engines, that won't do you much good, if the site isn't good for people, too!

Also, think of titles for each of your pages. Include keywords in those titles. The title of your page should show up in the top left corner of browser windows when placed properly in your meta tags. Search engines place a high value on your page titles. Use them to your advantage!

Another thing to consider is what you can offer people to entice them to give you their name and email address. Called an "opt-in", building a "list" is important. Why? Because you can follow up with people who are interested in what you have to offer, but that didn't make the decision on their first visit to buy.

Following up with people can turn a one time visitor into a repeat visitor. If you're sellling a product or service, you can earn their trust and build your credibility over time. If you're offering Google Adsense ads or affiliate programs, you can increase response through repeat visits.

All in all, it is much easier to retain a customer or visitor than it is to gain a new one. Think about their experience on your web site, customer service, build credibility, loyalty, repeat visits and ultimately repeat business.

  • 6. Your next step is to establish your web site. Now, as you know I'm a designer/developer. I would love to tell you differently, but 99% of you would have a hard time establishing your site if you do not use the services of a designer. It's not as easy as some people would have you believe to do it yourself. You would need to invest enough time to learn a lot of stuff.

I've tried to teach many, many people how to do it themselves, and while a lot of them took to it, and learned the mechanics, they have not even come close to mastering the seemingly simple concepts of easy navigation, clean presentation, and organized, logical development of the site.

If you're one of the rare people that could see the whole picture of the presentation of a website... try it. Otherwise, you'll need help. Now, I'm not trying to sell you on my design services, because I'm so booked with work that I'm NOT looking for more. But, believe me, building a web site means that you must know what you're doing, or you must be willing to learn. There's a reason that after more than 11 years online, I can offer you this advice. Experience!

  • 7. Copywriting. Depending on the type of web site you are putting together, there are different methods of getting your message across. What is common among all, however, is spelling, grammar, structure and readability.

If you're writing a direct response or sales letter type of site, you will want to focus on benefits to your visitor first and foremost. You'll want to answer the immediate question of, "What's in it for me?" Features of your offer come second to benefits to your potential buyer. Similar to an informational web site, your message should also be conversational, and entertaining to engage visitors in what you have to say.

For an informational web site, you'll want to create more of a community feeling and be entertaining and conversational in your content. If you make it interesting, your visitors will want to peruse your site and read what you have to say.

In all cases, think of your visitors as an audience. As you've probably read, the web is the leading medium at work, and the second leading medium at home, behind the television. We're talking entertainment!

Keep in mind that most people on the web will simply "scan" your page with their eyes, and not read it word for word. Perhaps if you are one of the greatest writers in the world, you can get everyone to actually read all of your content, but most of us don't fit in that category. So keep that in mind when you write.

Here's a suggestion that may help. When you are constructing your content, think of "newspaper headlines" for the particular information that you are presenting on a page. Write as many as you can think of... 30 or 50... then go back over them and pick the best ones. Then go back over the best ones, and pick the very best one, use it for your headline. The rest can be interspersed through your page as subheads. Make them stand out so that the readers eyes will be drawn to them. It they are interested enough, they will read more.

It's just a quick way to insure, as much as possible, that your message will get across to your reader.

  • 8. Plan your marketing as you build your site. I'm sure that you've heard just about every marketer say that the money is in your list. I agree.

So, while you're planning and building your site, think about what you can offer as a value trade. What I mean by value trade, is something of value that you offer for free in exchange for names and email addresses of your visitors. These will be qualified leads for your business.

Since you want to follow up with those that are interested in your offer, that free offer must be tightly associated with your other offers that will bring in the money.

You'll need to have an "opt-in" on your site. I highly suggest using 1ShoppingCart. That's the service that I use. 95% of my clients do, too.

The service stores your database online, and allows you to send autoresponders and broadcast emails to the people on your list. The simple package, called the Autoresponder Package, will be all that you need for this marketing strategy.

1SC also offers full shopping cart service complete with an Affiliate module that will handle all your needs when and if you decide to initiate an affiliate program to increase your sales.

You can upgrade your package as needed. You can easily start an online business with just the autoresponder package.

    So, what can you offer?

A free ebook, subscription to an e-zine, an article, software, tips, additional information, downloadable audio or video, contest entry, coupons, or something that goes along with a product that you're selling such as a brochure, guide or price list (etc.). Whatever it is, you must build a perceived value for it.

  • 9. Plan for more development of your site as time goes on. Updating your site consistently will not only make it more interesting to your visitors, but will please the search engines. A stagnant site disinterests everyone.

This is the major reason that I so highly recommend going with a site topic that you are passionate about. Since you will be encountering new information because of your high interest in the subject matter, more content for your site will come as second nature!

  • 10. Some additional things to consider during this stage of development.

    a. Good density of keywords per page is about 10%. That will sufficiently feed the search engine spiders, and retain readibility. Choose keywords that are important to the content of your page, not the general theme of your site.

    b. Remember "Title Tags" are very important and should also contain the most important keyword(s), but don't stuff them in there. Keep your title tags within 80 characters for best results. The title tag shows up in the upper left corner of the browser window.

    c. Alt tags are more than just an SEO strategy for adding keywords to your page. The ideal use of an Alt tag is for the main purpose of what a picture is that's placed on the page. This is welcomed by visually impaired individuals and those that have images turned off on their browsers... yes, people do that! However, using keywords to describe the picture is fine, as long as it is not overdone.

  • NOTE: As we progress in this portion of the lens, I will share more with you about creating your site, building traffic to your site, building the all-important "list", and monetizing your efforts.

    So stay tuned!

INTERNET MARKETING

  • DIY Internet Marketing: Even the best Internet Marketers don't know enough to keep a web site consistently in the top few pages of search engines. The algorithms that search engines use, especially Google, change frequently. That always causes a "shake up" in rankings. It drives marketers mad but Google does it (as do the others) to keep marketers from manipulating the results.

I used to teach search engine optimization and Internet marketing, and I do have tons of information, including lessons, but most of my clients, and past students, find that they don't really want to do the work themselves. So I quit teaching those subjects.

I simply recommend using a common sense approach to search engine optimization. When it comes to your web page, what I've proposed is the best you can do. Meta tags, alt tags, and your content should have plenty of keyword concentration but still be readable.

As for submitting to search engines (after your site is optimized), go here:

    iNeedHits

They have a free submission tool. One thing to keep in mind is that you want to avoid link-farms (search engines don't like them) and don't fall for the "submit to hundreds of search engines" at once, type thing. The link above is one that I have recommended in the past. And, preferrably, don't submit to the big ones (Google, MSN, Yahoo) at that time - skip them if offered. Submit to all the others, wait a few weeks, then go to each of the three left and submit there... if you need to. Preferrably, let them find your site themselves through back links.

As for what else you can do:

    1. You can submit articles to article directories such as Ezine Articles, Go Articles, Article City. You can learn more about that by visiting those places.

    2. You can create a "lens" here... Squidoo. Developed by Seth Godin who I believe is an Internet Marketing King. He offers a free ebook on the site (see at the end of each page on Squidoo in the "Squidoo Coop" group. It's out-of-date for Squidoo but very, very informative and a good read, of course.

    3. You can create a blog and market that though places such as Feed Burner

    4. You can visit forums and other people's blogs about your topic and post valid comments and include a signature that leads to your web site. Google your most important keywords and add "blogs" or "forums".

    5. You can create an MSN community site, and then visit other community sites and participate in the bulletin boards and invite people to visit your community, which in turn leads to your web site.

There are dozens of ways to promote your site and get the backlinks that you need. The more links out there, the better. Not only do search engines pay attention to that and may rank your site higher, but people who are searching around will also come across your links and click on them to visit your site. Keep in mind though that the big marketers do this for a living and get tens of thousands of quality backlinks that help their sites reach the top of the search engines. You won't need that many, if your competition isn't as extreme, but you will need hundreds in the right places.

You can look into hiring an SEO company, but while there are excellent services offered, a lot of bad companies have put a dark shadow on the whole lot. Here's a Seattle Times article about one such company.

One more thing, if you decide to do some of these things, create a signature where your URL is embedded in your best keywords. It's called anchor text and it matters.

    KEEP YOUR CONTENT FRESH.
Search engines love fresh content, which means your website needs to be updated on a regular basis. Daily is best, but weekly will do, too. Not only should you update content, but you should add to it. A website with more pages will out do a website with less pages, that is when both sites have quality content. A bunch of junk pages won't work in the long run, and will work against you fast.

DO'S AND DON'TS

Okay, let's start by saying that there are many things that you can do to achieve success online, but there are also a lot of things that can lead to failure.

Here I will address things that do and don't lead to success...

1. Be YOU! Don't try to imitate others, or take on things that you're not interested just because someone told you that you could succeed at it. Your personality, taste, disciplines and interests are unique. The way you present them will intrigue similar people. Mutual interests. Personality similarities. It's like making friends. That's what it's all about!

2. Build a professional looking website that is easy to navigate, and forget flash and effects. We still have nearly half of the U.S. home market on dial up connections. You have mere seconds to entice a visitor to stay on your site. If your web page takes to long to download, or get to the point, you lose!

3. Spending all your time researching and never actually doing anything might make you smarter, but it won't make you money. Too many products being sold to teach you how to do it all yourself are outdated, re-hashed information, and worthless... not all of them, but far too many.Caveat emptor... buyer beware!

If you spend all your time learning, when are you going to get down to actually building your business?

Put a plan together, research what you need to, don't get sidetracked, and then get to work building your business. Focus and just do it!

4. Buy your domain name and hosting separately unless you have access to each individually. I also recommend NOT hosting your site with your web designer.

5. Focus on your niche and do what you love! We all have something to offer... what do you know the most about, what do you love to do? Follow your passion to succeed.

6. Don't buy a resale rights or private label package that is older than dirt to sell online... check out what you want to buy before you buy it. Go to Google and search for the title of the ebook or program (or whatever) to see how many people are selling it. If there are tons of people selling the same thing, your chances are slim to none to ever earn much, if any, money from the product. Do your homework before you spend your money!

However, if you find any that you think you would do well with and is quite good, even though it may be old and oversold, you can always use it as a basis for your own work. Edit, rewrite, add to it, make it your own, then you can have success with it where others won't!

I am "MyWebGal.com"
Being in the right place at the right time brought me to success. Most people give up just before they make it online. My "time" came early, but others have taken far more time. The secret to success online is to "never give up, never surrender!" (Have you seen Galaxy Quest? Very funny!)

Another reason that people fail online is that they think that they can "get rich" without putting in anything other than their initial investment to get online. Online business is just like Real World business... you either put in time or money (or both). The more you're willing to invest, the more chances there are of success.

Don't lose faith. The online world is global, and there is a HUGE audience out there for who you are and what you have to offer! However, you must invest your time, your heart, your faith, and your money... or you'll just have another lost or forgotten non-producing web site!

My clients number in the hundreds and they differ in many ways. Some consist of those that want it all but don't want to invest much, which means they aren't doing it... And, those that understand business... and are doing millions of dollars in business online.

Are you a "get rich quick" wannabe, or a real business person? That's really the question!

Google Adsense
If your site is a content site, and you would like to monetize it with advertising, Google Adsense is the right answer. With little work you can add a few lines of code that will bring ads into your web pages that are geared toward the content of your page. It's easy and it can bring in a little or a lot of money!
List Builder
This is an affordable service where you can pay to advertise your ezine or newsletter and people can choose to sign up. I have used this periodically for a couple of years and found that most of the subscribers turn out to be quite loyal. You can choose single or double optins. I always choose double optins and rarely have people unsubscribe from my lists ever.
Domain Names and Hosting
I have done business with many different domain name registrars and hosting services. www.BetterWebBusiness.com is where I do all of my purchases of domain names and hosting now. I don't offer either as a web developer, but I do give recommendations. There used to be four places that I recommended, but now it's down to the one. I trust them, and appreciate the service and help that I get from them. And, you can get hosting for as little as $3.99 per month that is sufficient for many sites. Your domain name and hosting accounts can be accessed separately. That's important!

In case you didn't know, hosting and domain names are two separate things. Domain names, such as MyInternetBusinessStrategy.com, are purchased in yearly increments. Hosting can usually be purchased monthly, quarterly, or in multiples of years. Some hosting offers free domain names with the purchase of hosting, however - remember- if you don't have separate control, don't do it. You might save $8.95 but it's not worth it if you encounter any problems.
Shopping Cart: Ecommerce and Autoresponder Service
This is the greatest shopping cart service I have experienced in 11 years of building websites. You can have the full shopping cart, with or without an affiliate program, or just an autoresponder service. I personally use their service and highly recommend it!
Submit Free
Submit Free is a free site submission service. Submit to 20 search engines for free now! It's a good place to start anyway!
Practice Pay Solutions
Need a merchant account? Having worked with many different ones for my clients, I began recommending this one because they are very helpful and the interface is easy to use. Reliable, friendly, less expensive than most.

Three Focal Points of a Successful Online Venture
Doing business online requires more than just passion and courage. It requires more than savvy smarts and quick wits as well. Mere bravado would only spell doom, and unfounded confidence would be an insolence that courts disaster. More than anything else, doing business online, and eventually being successful at it, requires a mastery of the basics.

There are fundamental rules in online commerce that are often neglected by those who are overzealous to cash in on the latest trends. The early bird may catch the worm, but it is the wise bird that will be able to know when to strike at any given time. A review of these rules is necessary to arm us with the tools that could serve a lifetime of flourishing trade.

More Traffic, More Traffic, More Traffic!
It's a strange world, this place we call the Internet. Many things here are stark opposites of their real life counterparts. Take for example the following:

Whereas blind dating is a most dubious manner of meeting people in real life, it is the norm in cyberspace.

Whereas multi-level marketing carries with it a stigma of disaster in the actual world, it is a venture very much sought on the web.

And whereas traffic tends to irritate us in our daily existence, online denizens would kill to increase the same for their websites.

Traffic, or the volume of users who visit your site, is what ultimately dictates the success or failure of your enterprise. You may have the best looking site on the planet, offering the most beneficial package for would-be customers, but if no one gets to visit it, all would have been for naught.

Thus, generating traffic for your online business should be of utmost importance. Here are 10 proven ways to increase visitors to your site.
Advice for Beginners
When asked what advice Edward Gilbert could give for beginners, he was quick to reply. "Don't give up on it," he said, "just remember that Rome wasn't built in a day... It's not that hard," Eddie continued, "just don't forget to have fun."

Who is Eddie Gilbert? Earlier this year, Eddie's total online earnings reached close to two million dollars. Read more about what Eddie has to say here...
We all know and love Seth...
Seth Godin is a best selling author, and as he says, "entrepreneur and agent of change". I have purchased several of his books and subscribe to his blog, which is how I found Squidoo. He makes the most sense when it comes to marketing... so be sure to pay attention to this man! He is also VERY entertaining! Enjoy.
Creating An Effective Squeeze Page For Building Your Opt-In List
Traffic is the lifeblood of every online business.

But this is a raw statement. What would you do with traffic alone? Surely, you would not realize any profit if your marketing campaign is merely focused on generating visitors for your website, right? There must be some additional steps other than the marketing strategies being taught left and right. There must be some ways to actually convert those visitors into real, actual sales.

The technique that most online businessmen utilize is a squeeze page. A squeeze page is a complete page of your website that attempts to create interests in your visitors to transform them into paying customers. Basically, a squeeze page has three components. Find out more here.

Privacy Policies And Email Marketing
Gold is in your mailing list, as many people proclaim, and this statement is very true. With a mailing list, you would be able to employ an email marketing campaign to warm up your subscribers for a future sale and to inform them of your newest products.

But this method is fraught with risks, mostly of the legal kind.

The reason? Email marketing deals with a very sensitive right guaranteed for each individual regardless of race, nationality, age, gender or creed. This right is called privacy, or the right to be secure with one's personal details and against unwanted intrusions.

People generally hesitate to give out their personal information for fear that this will be used for purposes other than those they have consented to. This hesitance, if left unanswered, could spell doom for your mailing list, for your email marketing campaign, and potentially, for your business as well. More...

Defining your niche and target market
Who will be interested in your web site? Answering this question plays a crucial part in determining what information to include in your site and how to organize it.

All your customers need straightforward, well-organized content and ways to help them find it quickly and easily. You'll need to consider the same issues you face in developing a marketing strategy and business plan, such as:

* The type of product you sell.
* The demographics of your target audience.
* The location of your target audience.
* Your market niche.
* The type of image your want your company to project.

Search Engine Optimization Blog
Now, more than ever, the search engines are using a technology called Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) to determine a website's relevance.

LSI is a complex algorithm that not only checks keywords on your page but also checks for other words that commonly appear within content related to those keywords.

LSI is an algorithm that is so important that Google acquired a company by the name of Applied Semantics, a proven innovator in semantic text processing, in early 2003.

Nicheology 101
Jack Of All Trades, Master Of Many More

Ungrammatical as the word may be, Nicheing has been a very popular term in recent years, what with its common usage in internet marketing discussions. Nicheing is obviously derived from its root word. A niche is a small group sharing a particular interest. Serving these small market segments has been very profitable for most businesses, as product loyalty is almost, always assured, resulting in a stable demand.

9 Ways To Writing Your Greatest Sales Letter Ever
It is very common that people who are new to Internet Marketing will face with difficulties writing their own sales copy - a job called copywriting. Nevertheless, it is amazingly easy if you follow these 9 easy ways...

What doesn't work anymore...

Times, they are 'a changing...

Over the years, plenty of "HOT" strategies were born to help you catapult your web site to the top of the search engines. 99% of these no longer work...
  • 1. What was once considered building quick backlinks by using software that posted to other people's blogs, is now considered spamming. Just about any software that automates the process of posting anything to other people's work is considered spamming.

My recommendation? Visit other people's blogs that are relevant to your site and post a real comment about their blog and then invite people to visit your site. If you aren't going to offer any value to the blog, don't post... it's rude and offensive.

This, of course, needs to be done manually, but it would count as a quality backlink, and quality outweighs quantity!
  • 2. We all know that SPAMMING is bad. Don't try it. Use a double optin method to build your list. Keep in touch with them on a regular basis but offer solid information and not just sales pitches or you'll have a lot of unsubscribes.
  • 3. While Black Hat SEO may work temporarily, don't do it. You can get banned from the search engines! White Hat SEO is the only way to go!

FOR AFFILIATES

Any business, online or offline, that wouldn't require any initial cash layout, would be a win-win situation.

This is what makes affiliate programs so enticing. An affiliate program allows the affiliate marketer to act as a middleman between the consumer and the merchant, without having to add anything to the price of the product. The affiliate marketer is given a commission for every successful sale, and these percentages can be a substantial sum.

Many people have given up their day jobs because of affiliate marketing. The amount they are earning from affiliate programs is significantly larger than their day job.

If you want to enter the promising world of affiliate marketing, you'll find ten tips that would definitely help you maximize potential profit from the system here...

Earning big money on the Internet is entirely possible. Here are just a few examples of successful affiliates and affiliate programs:

-Cashring - Top affiliate earns $5,000/month

-FriendFinder - Pays out more than $1,000,000 in commissions to its affiliates every month.

-Matt Haller - NPC newsletter subscriber earns $10,000/month with a hip-hop affiliate site.

-Deborah Casey - Student of the 'Super Affiliate Handbook' by Rosalind Gardner who earns $15,000 every month.

-Jim Cockrum - Affiliate selling the 'Super Affiliate Handbook' made $1000 in ONE day!

-Rosalind Gardner - She regularly earns $50,000+/month just from her affiliate marketing efforts!

-Ewen Chia - An affiliate marketer who also regularly earns more than $10,000 every month.

How can you do the same? The answer: meet the basic requirements for a Super Affiliate: domain name, hosting, website, and sign up for the appropriate affiliate programs.

Basically affiliate marketing is as easy as 1 - 2 - 3, click here for more...

When an affiliate decides to represent an affiliate product, he or she is be given an affiliate link. The number of people the affiliate would be able to refer to the affiliate merchant's sales page would be gauged by how many people would click on his affiliate link.

But there could be a problem, particularly link theft. Learn how to prevent affiliate link theft here>>

The Business Side of Business

Separate Business and Personal Expenses

One of the biggest mistakes people make is mixing their business and personal expenses. Not only can this cause problems with the IRS, but it can also cause you to miss legitimate tax deductions.

If you are still co-mingling funds... NOW is the time to stop. Go to the bank and open a separate checking account for your business. You will need to get a separate credit card as well. Whenever you incur a business expenses, be sure to pay for it out of the correct account. If you are not sure what constitutes a business expense, check with your CPA.
