Photos and details on how I redecorated my kids' rooms with a little inspiration and help from IKEA.

This Old House

My home was built in 1959. We bought it in 2000 with the intent of fixing it up, but due to sudden necessary improvements (replacing appliances, etc.) any and all cosmetic work was put on the back burner.

Gradually, we are starting to spruce things up, and with the help of IKEA's home furnishings and accessories, we can do so with style, and without breaking the bank.

my IKEA: kid's room I

Read the step-by-step article on this room makeover.

My poor son spent his first year in a room that used to be my home office, and it was painted a cruddy red, back before we knew anything about painting.

When Kaleb's first birthday rolled around (as did his personality), we decided to give him a new, more fitting space. The room design was inspried by the big fish rugs that you see hanging over his crib.

GLIS Children's Table - $9.99
Our Glis table (pictured above) is a cool lime green and aqua color combo. It looks like IKEA has replaced that with new colors.

Since my son inherited my daughter's crib, dresser, changing table, etc. there really was not much other furniture needed for his new room.
MAMMUT Children's Stool - $6.99
The Mammut stool comes in a few different colors, and we have a couple more of them scattered throughout the house.

The Mammut stool is really not that big, but it's too big for my 1 and 2 year old to sit on. They can almost use them as a small table! I'd guess that children 3 and up would be the right size to use this stool for what it's intended.

KORALL KRABBA Chair pad - $3.99
KORALL Mobile - $6.99
KORALL BUBBLOR Quilt cover and pillowcase - $14.99
KORALL FISK Rug - $4.99
SMILA SJÖHÄST Wall lamp - $14.99
MINIFÅNGST Hanging storage/3 compartments - $1.49
IKEA PS FÅNGST Hanging storage/6 compartments - $3.99
LACK Wall shelf - $12.99
KORALL STJÄRNA Toy storage - $1.99

my IKEA: kid's room II

Before she was born, we decorated my daughter Kaya's nursery with a Classic Pooh theme. After the first year or so, the room just seemed too "babyish" for her, so we redid it with a Hello Kitty theme.

I had planned on repainting the bottom (green) portion of the walls with purple, but the original colors we'd used ended up looking pretty good with Kaya's new accessories. You can't tell very well from the photos, but the top of the walls and ceilings are covered in hand-painted clouds.

HENSVIK Crib - $129
The Hensvik crib is cuter and cost only 1/3 of what I paid for Kaya's first crib (now handed down to her little brother.) It's also ridiculously sturdy and safe.

When we're ready, the Hensvik crib converts to a toddler bed.

She's 2, but I'm not ready! :)

HENSVIK Dresser
I'm not sure if IKEA discontinued the Hensvik dresser or what. (I can't find it on their site, so the link above actually goes to Children's IKEA.)

I customized our Hensvik dresser by adding cute Hello Kitty drawer pulls that I got from Target.

RIBBA Frames - $6.99 - $24.99
We have a few Ribba frames in the room, all white frames with white mats. There's a photo (of Daddy) in one, and Hello Kitty paintings I did in the others.

Ribba frames are well-constructed and stylish, and they come in a variety of sizes and finishes.

I just purchased the Mammut children's stool, but I can't seem to assemble it! I hammered the legs into the base as instructed (and lined up the grooves), but the legs just kept falling out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I do! I do! I love Ikea!

Those hanging toy nets are so great. The whole room really feels like you're underwater.
