My Life as a Neonatologist
I'm a Neonatologist which is a Pediatrician that is also Board Certified in Neonatology. I take care of critically ill newborns.
I've frequently found myself saying "man... I need to write some of this stuff down."
This is my story... The ups and downs and lessons learned... "Life in(or outof) the NICU". (Based on true life experience, the names are changed for privacy, and the stories may be embelished!)
Check out my Blog!
Updated frequently. An enjoyable read!
I hope that this blog will be a lighthearted and entertaining read. I also hope that it might on occassion be helpful in some way to parents of babies that are in the NICU or are graduates of an NICU, other healthcare professionals that have an interest in this field, or anyone else that might happen to browse through.
I will state again, that though this blog is based on real-life experience, I will never use patient's actual names or other identifying information. Furthermore, I have changed many of the details. (ie any resemblance of characters in this blog to actual people is purely coincidental, they are essentially fictional).
Thank you for visiting and I hope you enjoy!

- Sounds like neonatology might be the field for you. It involves an extensive knowledge of physiology of the newborn. Main focuses include ventilator management, nutritional management, and managing complications of prematurity (necrotizing enterocolitis, patent ductus arteriosis, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, etc.) While pediatric surgeons handle any real cutting, there are a few procedures that require some manual skills like intubation, umbilical catheter placement, and chest tube insertion. In my opinion, this gives you "the best of both worlds". Hope this helps.[in reply to Kaila]

- So, do you actually perform the surgeries on the newborns when you are a neonatologist? i am trying to decide if i would like to study this field but am still a little blurry on the details. i am looking to do something that wouldn't involve having to cut people open and operate but am interested in working with cases that involve babies. Any suggestions?
I want to fascinate and entertain you!
