Luna, the English Cocker Spaniel

Meet La Luna Bella!

Please say hello to Luna, my English Cocker Spaniel. She has been an almost constant companion for 10 years, even as I write this she is sleeping just a few feet from me. While she may not understand why I work on the computer, she does stay with me while I do.

People who meet her quickly fall in love with her. Even here, she has been angel blessed and earned a purple star. She is very friendly, sociable and vocal. Yes, Luna loves to sing. She will sing on command, but she prefers to sing when she wants attention. It is her way of talking. But she likes to stand up and I am trying to break that little habit.

What breed of dog is Luna?

Cocker Spaniel from 1915She is an English Cocker Spaniel (ECS). In the United States the term "cocker spaniel" generally refers to the American Cocker Spaniels (ACS), however outside of the United States this typically refers to the ECS. There are subtle differences as they were the same breed until 1946. The English Cocker Spaniel is a bit taller, being between 16 and 15 inches tall versus the 15 to 13 of ACS, yet both weigh about the same.

One very visible difference is the pronounced "stop" that American Cockers have. The stop being the point where the muzzle joins the head. An English Cocker has a gentle slope.

Why Cocker?

This term refers to their history of hunting woodcock. Many will show bird hunting tendencies even with lack of training. The breed is also known as "the merry cocker" due to their happy nature and almost always wagging tail. This is part of what makes the Cocker Spaniels different than other spaniels.

English Cockers also are very loyal, while they bond with a family, there will typically be one person in particular to whom they attach. The breed is known for being extremely loyal and affectionate. They are also intelligent, adaptable and optimistic. It is a good breed to use as a service dog, hunter, or just a companion.

Healthy Dog Food and Dog Allergies

Last year Luna developed a soy allergy. This results in quite a mess and unfortunately many dog foods and even treats have soy in them.

These dehydrated dog food brands are often free of foods dogs are allergic. Trust me you do not want to wake up in the middle of the night and realize your dog has developed a soy allergy. After much research, I found that once a dog develops an allergy to soy, they develop allergies to corn and wheat as well. So instead of just limiting her soy intake I must limit them all, and give them grain free dog food

It might seem strange to feed your dog dehydrated dog food, yet most of the brands are very healthy. Some are completely organic, most use natural foods and are grain free, some are great for raw diets, and all of them offer healthy alternatives. Dehydrated food has the advantage of being a lighter package which makes it easier to ship and to take on trips. You add water, wait a few minutes and the food is ready.

Often the brands make 3 times as much food as the package. Honest Kitchens dehydrated 10 lb box actually creates over 40 lbs of food after you add water. This also means what seems expensive is really not that bad and makes a much happier and healthier dog. That is something we all want from our companions.

Luna's Silly Grin

How did you decide on an English Cocker Spaniel?

BelleMy parents each had cocker spaniels growing up. At that time, the American and English were still splitting. What they had was more like the English Cockers are now. Then they had one together when I was a baby.

My birthday present

In high school, my best friend gave me an English Cocker Spaniel. She did not have a pedigree, but her lineage was very clear. Her mom came from South Africa. We, Michelle and I, gave her a name to remind us of that heritage and named her Belle as in Southern Belle. Her personality fit exactly what I wanted from a companion dog.

Belle had heart problems, and just before her 10th birthday she died unexpectedly. While there are many other beautiful breeds in the world, the "merry cocker" is the personality I love. Plus they are not too big for being a companion and not too small for 2 mile walks. Not too loud, not too energetic, not slothful either.

Breeders did not often have websites, so my mom and I had to hunt for my new companion. After a months we found a breeder that was just a few hours south. He mailed us pictures of the 4 available puppies and the parents. The parent's pictures were for reference, to see the lineage and appearance of the parents. From those pictures I picked out one dog. I had her named before we visited.

Her name is Luna.

In the picture they sent, the top of her head reminded me of the moon, so her name is moon in Spanish. Her mother's name is Bella, which means beautiful, in both Spanish and Italian. Bella's owner was Italian. It also was a reminder of Belle. Thus the name became La Luna Bella. The Moon Beautiful in both Spanish and Italian although pronounced differently.

Luna believes in LOVE

She does not understand when someone does not love her as she loves them. I wish we could all love the way she does.

What activities do you do with your dog?

Luna and I love our walks. The walk allows us to spend time together and to see what is going on in the world. Tug of war and running around are her favorite games. She also loves it when I toss her toys to her or for her to fetch. Luna loves to cuddle and will love on me and the two indoor cats.

I didn't do it

You ever come home and find something torn up and the guilty party tries to look innocent?
Yes that is what I came home to one day and what inspired this product and this is a picture of the "innocent" party. She claims "I didn't do it. No one saw me. You can't prove it."

A Purple Star and Other Favorite Things

These are some of Luna's favorite toys and her favorite food. Maybe it is not her favorite food, but it is very healthy especially for a dog with digestive problems. She also loves the purple star she earned here on Squidoo. Ok, her mom loves that, but when I am happy so is she.
