I am pleased to announce the release of my new book, The Illustrated Encyclopedia Of Oboe Reedmaking: A Guide to the American School of Reedmaking, Volume 1. The Encyclopedia, edited by Alan Weiss, with foreword by Eugene Izotov (principal Chicago Symphony Orchestra), contains over 338 color illustrations and photographs (with captions) of the reedmaking process, 222 pages of text and information on reedmaking; an index, footnotes, glossary, list of illustrations, and list of tables. The book is printed in the USA on 80#, acid-free, matte paper in a sewn perfect binding.It measures 8.5" x 11" x .5". The book is available through www.oboeabode.com.
Volume 1 comes in both a left- and right-hand version. I hope that this book will make your reedmaking more successful and enjoyable.

Lesson Day Check List

These are the things that you must have each week to do a good job. Print this list and check it each week if you need to! It is easy to forget the obvious: the reeds, part of the oboe....
  • Oboe - all three pieces
  • Reeds-the ones that play
  • Reedcase
  • Music - everything that you need for the lesson
  • A small container to wet your reeds
  • A swab
  • A pencil
  • Cork grease
  • Notepad for assignments
  • Do not forget to brush your teeth before you play! Clean teeth and a clean mouth mean that reeds will last longer and the oboe will need fewer repairs.

John Mack Oboe Camp
The John Mack Oboe Camp is Celebrating our 35th Anniversary!

We begin accepting applications February 1, 2011.
June 10-17, 2011
The John Mack Oboe Camp, a weeklong series of master classes for oboists, has been meeting at Wildacres Retreat since 1976. Located near Little Switzerland, North Carolina, Wildacres is a place of supreme beauty, and is committed to advancing the arts, natural sciences, religion and the betterment of human relations. John Mack considered it his life's mission to teach music and his students now continue this tradition at the John Mack Oboe Camp. All classes are group classes with students performing standard etudes, solos, and orchestral excerpts. Admission is open to college-age oboists, professionals, teachers who desire a "refresher course" and a limited number of advanced high school oboists. A limited number of auditors will be accepted for a reduced fee.

There are two types of attendees: participants and auditors. Participants perform twice in the master class setting; auditors observe all classes and receive a 30-minute private lesson.

There are no auditions or tapes required

The 9th International Oboe Competition
THE 10th INTERNATIONAL OBOE COMPETITION OF JAPAN 2012 in Karuizawa
Sony Music Foundation

The INTERNATIONAL OBOE COMPETITION is one of the most prestigious international competitions solely dedicated to oboe. It has been held every three years since 1985. The purpose of the competition is to promote the true artistic value of the instrument, as well as to introduce and cultivate talented oboists, and furthermore to expand their arenas of activities in Japan and around the globe, eventually to contribute to the development of the entire musical culture with an international prospective. After the first seven competitions had been held in Tokyo, the venue moved to the Karuizawa Ohga Hall in Nagano Prefecture and has been held there since. The International Oboe Competition is a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions.
