Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, USA

Long Bay was its name in 1822 when a hurricane came through. For a while it was named for some of the earlier inhabitants - a family called Withers. In the late 1800s, it was called New Town (you know there's some juicy history there - I guess "Let's Start Over Town" was already taken). They must have taken a lot of flack for their lack of creativity in name-calling, so they held a contest for the new name of their town. Someone was probably looking out their window one day and said, "They sure is a lot of wax myrtle bushes at this beach town. Hey, let's call it Myrtle Beach." It was unanimous and thus became Myrtle Beach.

In 1938, it became an official town and in 1957, an official city.

Myrtle Beach - Pier 14 Web Cam

Looking south along Myrtle Beach from the pier at 14th Ave

Find more Myrtle Beach web cams here

Pier 14 Restaurant has a web cam facing north but I don't think it's working.

The web cam at Beach Cove Resort is mounted up high so it has a great of the pool, the dunes, the sandy beach, and the rolling waves.

Avista Resort in North Myrtle Beach. This is the kind of camera you can control, and you'll want to do that because some people only like to aim it at the sun bathers at the pool.

Web Cam - North Myrtle Beach

Prince Resort - Cherry Grove Pier

This is a nice web cam. First, it's at the end of the fishing pier instead of on the shore looking out at the pier. Second, it's the type of camera that you, the viewer, can take control and change where the direction of the camera.

Note that the camera is in the city of "North Myrtle Beach" which is not the same as "the northern end of Myrtle Beach." The pier at Cherry Grove is about 19 miles north of the "Second Avenue Pier" at Myrtle Beach.

We went a couple times when I was little and lived in Virginia. Nice lens. The intro is funny: "Start Over Town".

I began reading this book about two weeks before our trip to North Myrtle Beach and Charleston, South Carolina. From this book I learned alot about the history of South Carolina and it really helped me appreciate this area of the United States during our visit.
