Haunted Myrtles Plantation

Myrtles Plantation, St. Francisville, Louisiana

While I do a lot of research for my lens Scariest Places on Earth I come across a lot of information. Myrtles Plantation is among the top 10 scariest places in the United States.

When I was researching haunted areas in Louisiana for my lens Haunted-New Orleans it seems as if Louisiana is among one of the top scariest places in the world. Myrtles Plantation built in 1796 use to be called Laurel Grove and today is a Bed and Breakfast. Myrtles Plantation got its reputation of being haunted with ghost and spirits from 10 murders and a few suicides that took place there.

As legend has it, one of the owners Woodruff favored a slave name Chloe. Once Woodruff's interest in her began to fade, she became jealous and in fear of being sent out to work in the fields, Chloe would continuously eaves-drop on Woodruff. After being caught many times Woodruff became fed up with her and had her offending ear cut off. From that time on Chloe would always wear a green turban to hide the missing ear.

In an effort to get on good standings with the family again, Chloe made a birthday cake for Woodruff eldest daughter. Chloe secretly mixed poisonous oleander leaves in the cake thinking it would just make the family ill, and by her nursing everyone back to health she would get into their good grace again, but instead Tragedy hit! Chloe had used too much oleander leaves and Woodruff's wife, Sara, and two of children died.

Terrified what she had done, she confessed her wrong doings to fellow slaves and in fear of what would happen to them, they hung Chloe and threw her body in the Mississippi River. Legend has it that Chloe is often seen wandering the grounds still wearing her green turban.

Other Legends and/or Rumors

type=text-Another legend that surrounds Myrtles Plantation is it is built over Indian burial ground and the ghost of a young Indian woman has been reported.

-During the Civil War the house was ransacked my Union soldiers and three were killed in the house. Supposedly there is a stain in the doorway the size of a human body that will not come clean. Some rumors state that cleaners are unable to push their mop or broom into that space.

-It is said that the Spirits of Sara Woodruff and her two children can be located in a mirror located in the house. According to the legend, after a death all of the mirrors in a home is suppose to be covered but this particular mirror was over looked and trapped the spirits. They say you can either see the spirits of Sara and the children or hand prints are left behind.

-One of the rooms is haunted by a young girl who died in 1868 despite being treated by a local voodoo practitioner. Supposedly this young girl appears in the room and has been reported practicing voodoo on people sleeping in the room.

-There is another ghost supposedly William Winter who was shot on his front porch. Stories say, he had climbed up to the 17th stair, collapsed, and died on the 17th step. There have been different sounds reported from those stairs.

-A young girl with blond hair has often been sighted. She was skipping down the stairs singing a song, stopped and looked in the mirror. She was shot by an unknown and it is said that her spirit became trapped in the mirror, waiting to face her murderer and take revenge. Often this young girl will be seen walking up and down the stairs humming a tune inside the mirror or kneeling on the stairs crying. When people turn around towards the stairs there is nothing there. It is said that someone caught a picture with their cell phone of the girl.

Here is a great link I found that is loaded with all kinds of History of this plantation.

Yikes! I have heard people say that electrical and audio-visual equipment malfunctions or does 'strange' things around the spirit world (or are affected by the energy of that spirit world). I'm no expert, I am fascinated by all of this stuff though. Great lens for a way out there topic. Congrats on your purple star (belated). Sincerely, Rose

I have heard of Myrtles. I hear that many local (and famous) G Hunters have had experiences there, and the staff swears there is paranormal activity. It would be interesting to go there, no?

Well, this gave me chills just reading it. I think this would be one scary place and I definitely would not want to sleep in the room with the ghost who practices voodoo.

Six years ago I would have lovee to stay there! When I lived in Rhode Island we would go check out scary places and take video. I eventually got too scared and don't do it anymore, due to some creepy and unfortunate events. This Myrtle plantation sure looks scary, I love the stories behind it. Hey, at least I can read about it...
