Why I can live through the winter

Every year I wait anxiously to get a glimpse of the first spring bulb popping through the dirt.  It hails the arrival of spring and the end of long, dark, snowy cold days.

Now, don't get me wrong, winter is beautiful in it's own way, but who doesn't love the spring!

One of my favorite sounds of all is the hum of the first lawnmower cutting the finally green grass at the beginning of spring.

I garden - not because I am good at it, not because I have nothing better to do, but because it keeps me sane and makes me smile.  There is something you can't explain about looking at a beautiful patch of flowers that YOU planted.   Produce you grow on your own always tastes better than anything you can buy at the store.   Lastly, a legitimate excuse to play in the dirt and mud and act like a kid again.  What could be better!

Enjoy!

To compost or not?

When I was a kid, I used to think my dad was weird and just plain disgusting when he used to throw old vegetable/fruit scraps, lawn clippings and the like in a "special" bin he built in our backyard corner. We had to be the only people I knew with a stinky compost pile in the backyard.

Then, I married a man who thought compost was the gardening secret of the century and it was then I knew I was destined for a "stinky" pile in my backyard for the rest of my life.

That said, composting has given us some of the best looking plants and great vegetable gardens every year.

I thought my husband had really gone off the deep end when he bought a sophisticated compost tumbler. Yet again though, he proved to be right and we were getting compliments on our amazing yard once again. The compost tumbler had an added benefit - the stink was nicely contained in a covered container.

Composting, if you can stand the stink - it is worth every sniff!
