One Fan's Tribute to a Classic Video Game

Welcome to The Book of MYST: The Stranger's Journal.

In 1993 we fell into MYST and fell in love with its compelling premise: magic books could serve as gateways to other places. The journals left behind by Atrus, a scientist in the spirit of Jules Verne and Leonardo Da Vinci, helped guide us through these surreal, lonely worlds.

Ten years ago, I created this handwritten, hand-illustrated book as a tribute to the game. This is the one MYST journal that gameplay could not uncover: our own.

RealMYST Game Trailer

RealMYST® took the tiny 640x480 stills of the original game and re-rendered its worlds in lush realtime 3D. The voice is that of Catherine, Atrus' visionary wife whose gifted writings opened gateways to landscapes that seemed to defy the laws of physics.

RIVEN Trailer

RIVEN, my favorite MYST game, came out in 1997. Photo-realistic landscapes and critters look old hat now, but Cyan had gambled everything on purchasing movie-studio technology, the computers that had just created the first photo-realistic animals (dinosaurs) in Jurassic Park.

I loved this game when it came out, although the atmosphere was a bit creepy sometimes

Man, that MYST trailer is awesome. I love the huge, expansive landscapes of MYST. These days we have awesome graphics, but even though MYST doesn't have up-to-date graphics, I feel like I am there, not just playing a game. I love that feeling!! Games these days don't feel like that. It's way too obvious that I am playing a game. Not with MYST!

OMFG, a MYST LENS!!! HOLY SHITE!! I <3 Myst, used to play it as a kid, started playing it yet again recently. I'm not expert at it, but I love it! What a sense of adventure in that game!!! Ah, such imagination. I'm on Riven right now. Thanks for the awesome lens!

Wow, that was fabulous, you've been blessed.
I always got stuck in Myst, so it lost my interest real fast back in the day. Now that I'm older, it could be time to revisit it again.

This page is set to donate any earnings it makes to Room to Read, a nonprofit organization. Their Mission Statement:

"We partner with local communities throughout the developing world to provide quality educational opportunities by establishing libraries, creating local language children's literature, constructing schools, and providing education to girls. We seek to intervene early in the lives of children in the belief that education empowers people to improve socioeconomic conditions for their families, communities, countries and future generations. Through the opportunities that only education can provide, we strive to break the cycle of poverty, one child at a time."
