I Love Mystery Books
Why I Love Mystery Books
Even when I was a teenager, I loved a good mystery novel. I can't remember how old I was when I picked up my first one, but it wasn't long until I had read every Agatha Christie book at our local library. I've gone on to devour many other mysteries over the past 30+ years since then, from single novels of richness and depth to lighter series sets that are heavier on humor than plot. I love them all! Why? Well, I think it is because a mystery novel immediately pulls me into a puzzle of words and wit, far away places and times, and usually provides a very satisfying end.In this lens, I will introduce you to some of my all-time favorite mystery novels and authors. If you are already a whodunit fan, I hope you will find something new to enjoy.
The No. 1 Women's Detective Agency Series
Take an everyday mystery, add one smart lady detective and you have a great book!

The No. 1 Women's Detective Agency series of books by Alexander McCall Smith became some of my favorite mystery novels after I started reading them in 2007. Set in Botswana, the heroine, Precious Ramotswe, has set up her own detective agency and solves problems large and small in the lives of her clients.
Simple delightful, this series delivers on so many fronts. The characters are rich, the setting was new to me, and the little mystery problems themselves are satisfying.

Agatha Christie Mystery Novel Recommendations
Everyone seems to have a favorite Agatha Christie novel. I love most all of them. Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple are both marvelous sleuths. I think my all-time favorite is The Labours Of Hercules, though, a collection of short stories featuring Hercule Poirot.

The Beekeeper's Apprentice - A Fresh Look At Sherlock Holmes
by Laurie R. King
I was browsing the library one day several years ago, looking for a new mystery book to try, when I came across a book entitled The Beekeeper's Apprentice. When it mentioned Sherlock Holmes, I was intrigued. I took it home and soon found myself entranced with the story of Mary Russell, a young girl who meets the older Holmes after he has retired from active detecting. There are more Mary Russell novels that followed this first, and I have read them all.

- I LOVE mystery novels! I've never heard of Women's Detective Agency Series, but will now look for it! I do love Agatha Christie (Miss Jane Marple is my favorite character) and Sherlock Holmes, but one of my favorites is the ABC series by Sue Grafton. It's more modern, but they're all great!
