Ever wonder how big retail chains find out if their stores' customer service is up to standards? One way is by sending out mystery shoppers: people who pose as typical customers, write reports on the interaction, and get paid for it. It's a great way to make a little extra money on the side, while improving the quality of service at the stores in the process!

Some questions and answers about mystery shopping

Whom do mystery shoppers work for?
Mystery shoppers are typically independent contractors, providing services to firms specializing in this sort of work (known as Mystery Shopping Providers, or MSPs). Shoppers can generally sign up to provide services for as many MSPs as they like, and in order to get a decent amount of work, it is almost essential to sign up with as many MSPs as possible (there are hundreds).

What types of businesses are mystery shopped?
You name it! I have personally shopped everything from electronics stores to medical clinics, and I have heard from others who have been assigned to fine restaurants, real-estate offices, car dealers, and even cruise ships! Some shops require a purchase, which will usually be reimbursed over and above your pay for the shop; in most cases, you may keep what you buy.

Do I have to pay a fee to start mystery shopping?
Absolutely not. Of course, you'd never pay to work at a conventional job, and it is no different for mystery shopping. Unfortunately, certain unscrupulous companies charge aspiring shoppers exorbitant amounts of money for directories of MSPs, even though similar lists can be found free of charge on the Web. Never pay to work. Never pay to shop.

How is work assigned?
Different MSPs choose different approaches. Many MSPs let shoppers view assignments on the Web and choose which ones they will accept (called self-assignment), while other companies e-mail or call shoppers when they have jobs to offer. It is also common to use a combination of these two systems.

How much does each assignment pay?
Obviously, this will vary depending on the exact assignment and the MSP (certain companies are known to pay better than others). However, in my experience, most assignments pay US$25 or less; the exceptions are generally very complex jobs. In general, I advise new shoppers not to accept assignments that pay any less than $10 (except under very special circumstances). Assignments tend to go in monthly cycles, and if an assignment is unclaimed near the end of the month, it's very common for a bonus to be placed on the job. This bonus is sometimes very substantial, and often makes the job worthwhile for shoppers who wouldn't otherwise consider it.

Note that this list doesn't include links to individual MSPs. The list at Volition.com already does this quite well, and I see no reason to duplicate their work.

The trade association for MSPs. Most reputable MSPs (but not all!) are members. For shoppers, the MSPA provides general information about mystery shopping, a few job listings, and a certification program.

Probably the best place to discuss mystery shopping and similar work -- you must read these forums if you do any mystery shopping. Volition.com also has other useful resources, such as a comprehensive list of MSPs.
