What's the Deal With Mystery Shopping?
Is it legit?
Mystery shopping is not a get-rich-quick scheme. It's hard work, although it can be a lot of fun. Shops typically pay $5-10 with or without a reimbursement. There are shops that pay significantly more, but competition is high.
This lens will help you get started and to navigate the waters of the mystery shopping world.
Mystery Shopping Resources
- Volition
- Volition has a lot of resources, including freebies, contests, etc. They also have an area about Mystery Shopping, as well as a forum. There are people who swear by this site, and people who hate it, so you may just want to check it out for yourself and decide. The two most useful aspects for me are the list of mystery shopping companies and the forum posts where people share feedback about the companies.
- Mystery Shopping Providers Association
- This organization is really in place to support the mystery shopping companies, rather than the shoppers. However, they do provide some resources that can help out new shoppers. They have listings of mystery shopping companies and open shops. They also provide certification for shoppers, which is an attempt to provide quality shoppers for the companies.

Getting Started Checklist
- Sign up for a new email address that you can use just for mystery shopping. Depending on where you live, you may end up with a LOT of email each day, so this can help you stay organized. I'd recommend yahoo or gmail, because hotmail tends to block a lot of stuff.
- Consider receiving a silver certification from the Mystery Shopping Providers Association (MSPA). See my info box below about this, but you'll save a lot of time if you do this before starting to sign up with companies.
- Read more about mystery shopping, and what's expected of you. Taking the silver certification will cover this, but otherwise, visit mystery shopping forums (hint: we've got a few listed in our resource section) and get a feel for the lay of the land.
- Research the companies in your area. There are plenty of companies out there (once again, resource area), but not all of them will be trustworthy. Doing your research can help you figure out which companies pay late, which companies have a high occurrence of not paying for assignments, etc.

- Great info...glad I came across your site.
Should I get a mystery shopping certification?
The silver certification is a $15 online test. It's a nice overview to the basic expectations and ethics of mystery shopping. Once you pass the test, you'll receive a certification code that you can share with mystery shopping companies who recognize the program.
The gold certification is a more in-depth program. It involves a day-long in-person seminar and a follow-up online test. The fee is $99 and includes lunch and materials. I recommend completing the gold certification after having some experience shopping. This will give you the chance to make sure you enjoy shopping, but it will also make the training more useful. There are a number of topics covered that may be confusing/less than helpful for inexperienced shoppers. The gold program is scheduled at various locations/times throughout the country.
