Supermodel? Moi?

I ain't really no supermodel, but I did have the privilage of working as a regular one during the nineties. I graced the catwalk, music videos, TV commercials, and magazines, lovin' every second. I had so much fun travelling and meeting some really interesting people, some of which have become firm friends.

Have you ever thought about being a model? If the answer is yes, would you like to know what the pro's and con's are? Is it really as glamourous as it looks? This lens will more than answer those questions and also tell you about my journey.

It seems so long since I was living that life and penning my model memoirs has brought back some amazing memories and a lot of laughs! I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I have writing it.

How I got started?

I bet you're dying to know how I got started, right? It's usually the first question people ask. The truth is, I fell into it by accident. It was never my ambition to become a model and in fact, I always felt like the ugly bird growing up and even now I still have my off days.

Anyway, it all began in Ipswich, Suffolk where I worked worked as a hairdresser. I grew tired of the small town mentality and decided to leave my job and set up my own business as an urban milliner ( hatmaker).

Business was doing ok and I even made some bespoke peices for Jay Kay from Jamiroqui (right).
I arranged to meet a drum & bass record producer outside Blackmarket Records in Soho, to discuss designing some patterns for his clothing line. I remember that gorgeous sunny day quite clearly. The sun was beating down on my face as I sat on the step outside. The twisted blonde china bumps in my hair felt tight, but I knew they looked funky so accepted the pain!

As I sat people watching, a young women approached me asking if I was interested in taking part in a music video. I thought she was taking the piss, but she worked acreoss from the shop and her collegues had seen me tyhrough the window and had been arguing about who was going to get me for the video. I followed her up to the office and told her I would only do it if they agreed to pay my expenses. I didn't live local, and I was not about to spend extra money for them. She arranged everything and a few days later I was back, on set in a London studio.

The video was for 'John Reid and the Nightcrawlers' and the song was called 'Don't let the feeling go.' John came in and picked me with a few others to join him for the main part of the video. There was a car and caravan sceen set up. They filmed us as we had to climb through the back of the caravan and into the car seats. Two of the crew rocked it from side to side to simulate the car being driven. A serious budget video! You'll see from the finished result that we had a lot of fun!

After shooting, John said he needed dancers for his promo tour. I continued to make hats when I was home, but I couldn't turn down life on the road with John around the world for 18 months. Result!

Oh! I forgot, I must tell you that it was directed by Guy Richie. Yes! Madonna's ex Guy Richie and he said I was a natural in frount of the camera! Ahhh Shucks LOL !!! Here's the finished vid, hope you like it!

George Michael - 'Spinning the Wheel'

After I joined an agency (Boss Models) this was my first and favourite ever job. I remember going for the casting really clearly, but not knowing who the job was for.

There were reams of people queuing and when it was my turn, they just blasted different types of music and we had to dance in front of a panel. It was quite scary as it was also in front of all the other waiting models. I just remember feeling how nuts it was and skinned my teeth as I shook my toosh. If I had known the job was for George Micheal, I would have shat myself and not been as relaxed as I was.

I can't remember exactly where in London it was filmed, but I do remember arriving on set where there was lots of activity and crowds of beautiful people.
When it was time for me to go to make up and wardrobe, I was ushered into a large winnebago (posh caravan). It was crammed with make up artists and ready to go models. As the make up artist introduced herself and investigated my skin, it was then I discovered the icing on the cake. She told me that I, yes me, was going to be one of the heavely featured girls in the video! She said that I was going to be 'The one!' I had to contain my excitement as squeeling like a piglet would sooo not be cool!

My wardrobe was a slinky vintage 20's dress, heavily embroided in white glass crystals. The dress was so heavy but felt amazing. I also had to wear a ghetto gold tooth which made me laugh as they gave me a funny lisp. The picture above right was taken outside the posh caravan before my costume and make up was approved.

The video was shot over a few days and it was soon my turn to do my thing. The set was amazing. All smokey, sultry and glitter. I was helped onto a small stage and just asked to dance to the music. Behind the camera I just caught a glimpse of George. Seated, smiling awaiting my performance. No pressure then!! I decided I wasn't going to buckle under pressure, but go inside myself and savour the moment! The director shouted 'Playback,' and the music began. I immersed myself into the music and showed him what I had! I was so happy.

George arrived on set the next morning with his dog, and came to me over breakfast to say how much he loved what I did. Oh My God! Here's the beautifully finished video. My dream job!

Spice Girls - The making of - Who do you think you are? February 1997

I loved making this video. It was the remake of the original version for comic relief. Seeing French and Saunders larking about was genious. It was also where I met my good friend Jamie who is a circus performer. The finished result always makes me smile :-)

Sly & Robbie featuring Simply Red - Night Nurse

This is another one of my memorable videos, purly for the jokes with my Nightcrawlers dance partner Clarice. We had become firm friends after touring with the nightcrawlers and ended up doing many other shoots together.

We were spent alot of time during this video laughing and getting up to no good. It was set up like a blues party and there were far too many funny cigaretts about the place! Mick Hucknall was hoping to get a piece of Clarice and she was quite happy to let him think he may, but he had no chance!

Gosh, just remembered having to choose some random guy out of the cast and then snog him in the video. I'll never forget the beam across his face when we finished shooting! Hope you like it.

Pet Shop Boys - New York City Boy

I have to say, The Pet Shop Boys were the most down to earth celebs I've ever met. They were quite happy to hang out and the rest of the cast and crew were great fun too. After shooting the video, I also did a few dates with them in Europe and we all had such a fab time.

I've always loved reading about Studio 54, the hottest New York club of the 70's and this video is a great tribute to its fabulousness.

Louise - One Kiss From Heaven (Official Music Video)

The only thing I remember about this video was that it was shot in someone's amazing home that they rent out for shoots. It was like some retro, disco joint with huge sculptures and mosaic everywhere. I want one!!

Deni Hines - It's Alright

Dragged my brother with me to shot this one and get a few quid.

Lighthouse Family - Postcards from heaven - Raincloud

I hated making this video. It was cold, wet and extremely boring. There was a whole group of us who had to push this giant suspended ball to each other. We also had to throw large buckets of paint. We were all cold, fed up and could't wait for it to end. Who said being a model was glamourous!

Bookings Models
Bookings Model Agency was started in 1976.

As one of the founding members of the Association of Model Agents, we take our responsibilities seriously. We don't just look after the careers of our models today, we realise they are young people who need advice and guidance for the future. At Bookings we have always taken pride in the care we take of our models.

As an agency we've never had hundreds of names on our books at any one time, preferring to remain smaller and more personal where all our models feel they are an important part of the agency, no matter how young or experienced they are. We believe, for someone entering the fiercely competitive world of the fashion industry, our sort of care can make all the difference.
Storm Models

We plan each person's career for the long term, always taking his or her strengths and personal circumstances into account. This, we believe, will maximise their potential, their job satisfaction and the opportunities available to them. Likewise we build our client relationships for the long term, endeavouring consistently to have the best modelling talent available to them.

Storm is a member of the Association of Model Agents. Telephone number +44 (0)9068 517644. Calls charged at 50 pence per minute.
Ugly agency
UGLY Model Agency is the first and still the best character model agency in the world.

Ugly enterprises were started in 1969 by two photographers who recognized a gap in the modelling market for "interesting" faces. They created a niche for itself in supplying advertisers with faces that are not traditionally beautiful to front their campaigns.

Ugly specializes in individuals, and with over 900 models on our books ranging from 18-100 years old, sizes 6-30 and our Wee Folk (4'1) to The Giant (7'6). We can fulfill any requirement, as no job is too big, outrageous or bizarre for Ugly model agency. As a result Ugly model agency has built up a large client base over its 35 years.

Your Booker relationship

When you join an agency, you'll be assigned a booker. This person is responsible for marketing you, booking your jobs and generally looking after all your needs as a model. Your relationship with your booker will be the most important thing to enhance your career.

My booker was a gorgeous guy called Gabriel. He was 17 when we first met at the agency (Boss Models) and 16 years later, he's still my GBF (Gay best friend).

Now, he's more fabulous then ever, running his own PR agency. If you hadn't guessed already it's Gabriel above right with Amy Winehouse

Gabriel with Naomi and Boy George

How not to act like a supermodel

Now we all know that Ms Campbell has alot of fire in her behind when she's vexed and THAT phone incident got her into serious trouble. I know its naughty and shouldn't laugh, but this puppet representation of her rage just has me in stiches every time. The expression on Naomi's face is priceless!

UK Levis campaign - Simon Foxton

This was my biggest advertising campaign. I became friends with this guy who had worked with Simon Foxton (stylist) on many occasions. He told me that Simon was looking for some new faces for a Levi's Job and I went along with him to the casting. I got no money, but remember he had a huge suitcase of Levi's clothes and we could help ourselves. I chose a chunky sheepskin jacket.

A few weeks after the shoot, I remember travelling on the bus to a casting on the Kings Road and as it pulled up at the traffic lights there I was! A large cardboard cut out of me, bold a brass in the Levi's shop window. As I stumbled off the bus to catch my breath, the phone went. It was a girlfriend telling me she had just seen someone else on the bus with a rolled up poster of me. Apparently they was a huge launch at the Regent street flagship store and they were handing out lots of promotional material. I had to see it ! I could not belive it! There I was again, this time a massive 8ft poster in the Regent Street window. This campaign was being displayed right across the country. What a buzz!

New InStyle Look of the Day

Beauty really is only skin deep.

As much as I enjoyed modelling, it didn't make my self esteem shoot through the roof. It didn't suddenly make all those negative things I said in my head go away. All the money and adulation has not made Naomi happy and all the drama she has in her life has tainted her looks.

I know its cliched but what I learned was, chasing external adulation won't make you happy. It may do for a few moments with a reputable job or the occasional fat pay check, but ultimatley you need to focus on the inside to bring out your real beauty and make you happy.

Loved reading your life in story form - what and adventure! It must of been great meeting all those people and having a story to tell. You left a comment on my black history UK lens and as I was busy updating it I thought I would come over and say hey and to let you know that this year I have finally taken the plunge to run an event.
