Brief history of Tai Chi Chuan

Tai Chi Chuan is an ancient Chinese Martial Art whose history is recorded in books written in the last few hundred years, but there is also a much older richer oral history passed down through certain families. It is said to have been developed by warriors who, being dissatisfied by hard external styles of Kung Fu set about creating a soft style of martial arts that emphasizes development of internal chi energy in place of brute strength.

The training practices of Tai Chi Chuan are based off slow controlled movements in harmony with breath and balance combined with subtle weight shifts. The first known master of Tai Chi Chuan was a man named Chen Wang Ting, the originator of Chen Style. The Chen Style of Tai Chi Chuan was kept within the Chen family and not allowed to be taught to non family members. Sometime in the late eighteenth century, a man named Yang Lu Chen, a martial artist who, after twice in boxing by younger members of the Chen family decided to give up the hard style of fighting and steal the secrets of the Chen family style, disguised himself as a beggar and took up residence with the Chen family and secretly watched its practice.

Yang Lu Chen didn't realize that the grand master was aware of his plans. The grand master was so impressed by Yang that he broke family tradition and consented to secretly teach Yang the entire lesson. The master believed that this would ensure the spread of Chen style outside the family. Yang became a master of Chen style, and then modified and developed his own style and taught it to his son and so was born the Chen style.

Practice and Benefits:

The Tai Chi form is a set of body movements that can consist of 44 to 108 separate movements. Each style has its own number of linked postures. These movements are preformed in a slow controlled manner. The breathing is also controlled in sync with the movements.

The benefits of tai chi chuan are health and serenity. The practice of it is a great way to achieve stress reduction and positive mental attitude. Students, through the practice of TCC (Tia Chi Chuan), are taught to develop a calm spirit and concentrated mind. As students learn to relax during the form, they develop and awareness of mind and body control which results in increased self-worth and confidence.

The relaxing effect of regular TCC practice has been shown to help reduce high blood pressure and a host of other stress related ailments. I personally still practice TCC as often as I can with my busy schedule, because I receive mental calmness and it helps me retain joint range of motion and flexibility.

watching the videos impresses that tai chi movements are so light. They are light and graceful and seem to just flow.
