1971
1. Black Dog2. Rock And Roll
3. The Battle Of Evermore
4. Stairway To Heaven
5. Misty Mountain Hop
6. Four Sticks
7. Going To California
8. When The Levee Breaks
Although Zep4 was one of the first albums I ever bought, I have never considered myself to be a Led Zeppelin afficinado and this is the only album that I can comfortably listen to all the way through.
Being a bit of a hippy at heart, I love the images conjoured up by the liberating lyrics of Going To California and Misty Mountain Hop, the mystical, medieval feel of The Battle Of Evermore and, of course, the timeless folk-rock anthem Stairway To Heaven.
Black Dog and When The Levee Breaks give the album a more bluesy feel and Rock And Roll does exactly what it says on the tin.
If there is one trck on the album that I like less than the others, it has to be Four Sticks, which I find a bit jumbled and busy for an album that is otherwise very easy on the ear.

Laundry Service - Shakira
2001
1. Objection2. Underneath Your Clothes
3. Whenever, Wherever
4. Rules
5. The One
6. Ready For The Good Times
7. Fool
8. Te Dejo Madrid
9. Poem To A Horse
10. Que Me Quedes Tu
11. Eyes Like Yours (Ojos Asi)
12. Suerte (Whenever, Wherever)
13. Te Aviso, Te Anuncio (Objection)
I have always been partial to a bit of Latin music and the fact that Shakira is a multi-faceted all-round mega babe is certainly part of the appeal for me.
The album is a likeable mix of tango beats, latin pop and self-indulgent ballads (that never quite ring true when coming from someone so attractive) and of course it contains English and Spanish versions of the song that made her name in the UK, Whenever, Wherever, and the wonderfully thought-provoking Underneath Your Clothes.

Appetite For Destruction - Guns n Roses
1987
1. Welcome To The Jungle2. It's So Easy
3. Nightrain
4. Out Ta Get Me
5. Mr Brownstone
6. Paradise City
7. My Michelle
8. Think About You
9. Sweet Child O'Mine
10. You're Crazy
11. Anthing Goes
12. Rocket Queen
Unfortunately, I am old enough to class 1987 as modern and, with this in mind, Appetite For Destruction is by far the best all-round rock album of the modern era.
Welcome To The Jungle, Paradise City and Sweet Child O'Mine have already earned their place in rock folklore and the mix of trashy lyrics and superlative instrumentals make this a must-own classic.

American Idiot - Green Day
1. American Idiot2. Jesus Of Suburbia
3. Holiday
4. Boulevard Of Broken Dreams
5. Are We The Waiting
6. St Jimmy
7. Give Me Novacaine
8. She's A Rebel
9. Extraordinary Girl
10. Letterbomb
11. Wake Me Up When September Ends
12. Homecoming
13. Whatsername
It's hard to describe this album without drawing parallels with The Who's Tommy or similar rock-operas but there is something quite comforting about the thread of familiarity that runs from start to finish.
As far as the songs go, there are some that I would rather compare with the likes of Supper's Ready by Genesis in as much as they are long (very long in the case of Homecoming and Jesus Of Suburbia) and cycle through a spectrum of moods and styles like a good story should.
St Jimmy, Holiday and She's A Rebel all contain elements of the band's grungy roots but the rest of the tracks have a melancholy feel to them, enabling the listener to follow the ingenious lyrics without quite knowing exactly what story they are telling.

Automatic For The People - REM
1. Drive2. Try Not To Breathe
3. The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite
4. Everybody Hurts
5. New Orleans Instrumental No.1
6. Sweetness Follows
7. Monty Got A Raw Deal
8. Ignoreland
9. Star Me Kitten
10. Man On The Moon
11. Nightswimming
12. Find The River
One of REM's more mellow albums. Everybody Hurts took the world by storm and instantly became the anthem of everyone who has ever felt in the slightest bit down-trodden, but the final two tracks, Nightswimming and Find The River, are also fantastically thought provoking - even if I haven't got a clue what the latter is about (apart from finding a river obviously).
The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite provides the only up-tempo track on the album and maybe saves you from actually kicking the chair away.

Bat Out Of Hell - Meatloaf
1. Bat Out Of Hell2. You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth
3. Heaven Can Wait
4. All Revved Up With No Place To Go
5. Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad
6. Paradise By The Dashboard Light
7. For Crying Out Loud
There's not much you can say about Bat Out Of Hell that hasn't already been said. It's a classic, it's a multi-million seller and it graces the cd rack of almost everybody in the western world.
Obviously Jim Steinman has to take credit for the songs' contents but the delivery is smooth and friendly enough to bring this style of soft rock to the masses.

Born In The USA - Bruce Springsteen
1. Born In The USA2. Cover Me
3. Darlington County
4. Working On The Highway
5. Downbound Train
6. I'm On Fire
7. No Surrender
8. Bobby Jean
9. I'm Going Down
10. Glory Days
11. Dancing In The Dark
12. My Hometown
Recorded when Bruce was still in his raw, this album, or more specifically the song of the same name, was what openened my eyes to his music back in the 80s. Each song is delivered with a pained inflection that suggests that even the more upbeat tracks were written from the heart and hold some unhappy memory for the singer. I'm On Fire, which was the AA side to Born In The USA, would have to go down as one of my favourite love-songs of all time.

The Doors - The Doors
1. Break On Through (To The Other Side)2. Soul Kitchen
3. The Crystal Ship
4. Twentieth Century Fox
5. Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar)
6. Light My Fire
7. Back Door Man
8. I Looked At You
9. End Of The Night
10. Take It As It Comes
11. The End
The first Doors album nearly didn't make it into my top 10 because I was undecided between The Doors and LA Woman but the rawness of this album swayed it for me over the more blues-orientated LA Woman. This is the album, if any does, that gives an insight into the troubled mind of Jim Morrison, especially the Oedipus-inspired The End, which many find too narrative to enjoy as a song.

Nevermind - Nirvana

3. Come As You Are
4. Breed
5. Lithium
6. Polly
7. Territorial Pissings
8. Drain You
9. Lounge Act
10. Stay Away
11. On A Plain
12. Something In The Way (incl hidden track)
Did grunge exist before Nevermind - I'm sure it did for devotees, but certainly not in my mind. Every track is amazing (with the possible exception of the hidden bonus track) and back in the early 90s, when upsetting parents was high on the agenda, Nevermind was just the job.

If I Should Fall From Grace With God - The Pogues
1. If I Should Fall From Grace With God2. Turkish Song Of The Damned
3. Bottle Of Smoke
4. Fairytale Of New York
5. Metropolis
6. Thousands Are Sailing
7. South Australia
8. Fiesta
9. Medley
10. Streets Of Sorrow - Birmingham Six
11. Lullaby Of London
12. The Battle March Medley
13. Sit Down By The Fire
14. Broad Majestic Shannon
15. Worms
Of course The Pogues are masters at belting out their own brand of Irish folk/punk rock but I have always found their previous albums a bit hard to listen to. This one is a little calmer and there are a couple of ballads thrown in - like the wonderful Fairytale Of New York, a collaboration with Kirsty MacColl that so nearly made the Christmas Number 1 in 1987.
